Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to determine whether the implementation of Tribes Learning Communities would have a positive impact on students' behavior, and consequently, classroom management overall. Tribes' curriculum enlists the use of community-building activities, collaborative class discussion, long-term student groups of no more than four, and the understanding of four tribe agreements. Explicit strategies and plans, developed specifically for classrooms with Tribes Learning Communities, were used to maximize the effectiveness of the small group design. A rate scale survey was administered as a pretest / posttest to gather initial and final student perceptions regarding group work. In a large group, as well as small cooperative learning groups, subjects were involved in daily community building instruction and activities. Weekly assessments (surveys) were administered to monitor progress of the implementation. This quasi- experimental one group study was implemented in a general education, grade four classroom of 16 students. Subjects' overall impression and performance within a collaborative classroom environment of student tribe groups were gauged through three assessments. Of those assessment pieces, two were student rate scale surveys, and one was a teacher-created behavioral referral form. An anecdotal journal was logged throughout the study to note observations, track individual and group performance, and monitor students' perceptions of the study. For a period of nine weeks. observations were documented and analyzed to monitor group progress. Findings from the study show an increase in effective group perception as well as a decrease in problematic student behavior. It can be inferred that the results are in direct correlation with the implementation of Tribes, as an initiative to promote cooperative learning skills and positive behavior within student groups.

Book excerpt: The purpose for this study was to determine if building a positive classroom culture through the use of Tribes Learning Communities (Gibbs, 2006) would impact students' behavior. This ten-week study took place at Prairie Ridge Elementary School in Cedar Rapids, Iowa during the fall of the 2009/2010 school year. The researcher used the Tribes Curriculum to implement community-building activities, community circles, and cooperative learning groups with the intention of creating a positive classroom community and decreasing occurrences of negative student behaviors. Students participating in Tribes Learning Communities were explicitly taught problem-solving and conflict-management skills and encouraged to use these skills in their everyday experiences with peers. This study was implemented in a general education, Grade 4 classroom of 25 students. Subjects' perceptions of classroom culture were assessed through a teacher-created survey used as a pretest and posttest. Tribe group dynamics throughout the study were assessed through the use of group self-assessments. A checklist and an anecdotal journal were also used to document negative subject behaviors and instances of conflict resolution. Results showed an increase in positive classroom culture and few instances of negative student behaviors, which could be attributed to the use of Tribes Learning Communities.

Book excerpt: This paper investigates what characteristics are necessary in a classroom to effectively implement the community building teaching strategies of the Tribes process. This process was designed to change the pattern of interaction within a classroom from a primarily teacher to student interaction to one in which dialogue is between students with the teacher's role becoming one of learner and facilitator. Skills that are developed through this process include: attentive listening, problem solving, decision-making, and expression of ideas. All of these skills are important within family relationships, work settings and other organizational systems (Gibbs, 2001). Two classrooms, a fifth grade math class and a second grade classroom, were observed and teachers were interviewed for this study. In the first class, the strategies were only used for math class. In the second class, the strategies were implemented throughout the school day as well as throughout the school, resulting in a lifestyle within the classroom. The difference in the results points to three important characteristics of a classroom that fully implements Tribes: (1) The process is embraced as a lifestyle, (2) The Tribes strategies are consistently used throughout the day and, (3) All teachers working within the classroom need to have a comparable approach to the use of the strategies.

Book excerpt: TRIBES Learning Communities is a process. It is a way to establish a positive environment for learning and human development throughout a school by building a sense of community for learning and being together. TRIBES is a health initiative in the Green Bay School District, which has been researched and proven to improve students' self-directed learning. Yet, the implementation of TRIBES has been hindered at ABC School due to a variety of reasons; the unstructured envornment at ABC School, the lack of time during the school day, and a lack of TRIBES resources. With the full implementation of TRIBES at ABC School, students will problem solve and discuss their differences and disagreements. A positive and safe school environment will be created where the students will learn the intrinsic value of making good choices, which will prepare them to become respectful citizens at home, in school, and in the community. The implementation of TRIBES is essential in order to sustain the unique philosophy and the respectful family and community atmosphere at ABC School.

Book excerpt: The framework for teaching document is an evolving instrument, but the core concepts and architecture (domains, components, and elements) have remained the same.Major concepts of the Common Core State Standards are included. For example, deep conceptual understanding, the importance of student intellectual engagement, and the precise use of language have always been at the foundation of the Framework for Teaching, but are more clearly articulated in this edition. The language has been tightened to increase ease of use and accuracy in assessment. Many of the enhancements to the Framework are located in the possible examples, rather than in the rubric language or critical attributes for each level of performance.
