Download or read book In Defense of Housing written by Peter Marcuse and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2024-08-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In every major city in the world there is a housing crisis. How did this happen and what can we do about it? Everyone needs and deserves housing. But today our homes are being transformed into commodities, making the inequalities of the city ever more acute. Profit has become more important than social need. The poor are forced to pay more for worse housing. Communities are faced with the violence of displacement and gentrification. And the benefits of decent housing are only available for those who can afford it. In Defense of Housing is the definitive statement on this crisis from leading urban planner Peter Marcuse and sociologist David Madden. They look at the causes and consequences of the housing problem and detail the need for progressive alternatives. The housing crisis cannot be solved by minor policy shifts, they argue. Rather, the housing crisis has deep political and economic roots—and therefore requires a radical response.

Book Synopsis Trends and Impacts of Foreign Investment in Developing Country Agriculture by : Pascal Liu
Download or read book Trends and Impacts of Foreign Investment in Developing Country Agriculture written by Pascal Liu and published by Food & Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). This book was released on 2013 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Substantial increases in agricultural investments in developing countries are needed to combat poverty and realize food security and nutrition goals. There is evidence that agricultural investments can generate a wide range of developmental benefits, but these benefits cannot be expected to arise automatically and some forms of large-scale investment carry risks for host countries. Although there has been much debate about the potential benefits and risks of international investment, there is no systematic evidence on the actual impacts on the host country and their determinants. In order to acquire an in-depth understanding of potential benefits, constraints and costs of foreign investment in agriculture and of the business models that are more conducive to development, FAO has undertaken research in developing countries. This publication summarizes the results of this research, in particular through the presentation of the main findings of case studies in nine developing countries. It presents case studies on policies to attract foreign investment in agriculture and their impacts on national economic development in selected countries in Africa, Asian and Latin America.
Book Synopsis Key Factors for new High-Rise Residential Real Estate. A Case Study of Vancouver by : Lars Poggensee
Download or read book Key Factors for new High-Rise Residential Real Estate. A Case Study of Vancouver written by Lars Poggensee and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: B, Heriot-Watt University Edinburgh (School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society), language: English, abstract: This dissertation aims to evaluate the potential of high-rise residential real estate to provide affordable housing in urban areas as a response to the growing population. The city of Vancouver was selected as a case study. Beginning with an analysis of Vancouver’s housing market, three important factors that mainly influence success or failure of new high-rise residential real estate were identified and their validity reviewed. The results indicate that in order for high-rise residential real estate to be a part of the solution to overcome housing shortages, it must be supported by a clear set of policies and a framework that assures an adequate supply of affordable units. The needs of the local population need to be considered appropriately (suitability), and a certain level of liveability needs to be retained to avoid overcrowded or underused urban areas. The populations of urban areas are expected to grow over the coming decades. Consequently, if demand exceeds supply, housing costs are likely to rise, and the portion of disposable income that needs to be spent on housing will rise.
Book Synopsis The Globalisation of Real Estate by : Dallas Rogers
Download or read book The Globalisation of Real Estate written by Dallas Rogers and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Individual foreign investment in residential real estate by new middle-class and super-rich investors is re-emerging as a key issue in academic, policy and public debates around the world. At its most abstract, global real estate is increasingly thought of as a liquid asset class that is targeted by foreign individual investors who are seeking to diversify their investment portfolios. But foreign investors are also motivated by intergenerational familial security, transnational migration strategies and short-term educational plans, which are all closely entwined with global real estate investment. Government and local public responses to the latest manifestation of global real estate investment have taken different forms. These range from pro-foreign investment, primarily justified on geopolitical and macro-economic grounds, to anti-foreign investment for reasons such as mitigating public dissent and protecting the local housing market. Within this changing geopolitical context, this book offers a diverse range of case studies from Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, Russia, Australia and Korea. It will be of interest to academics, policymakers and university students who are interested in the globalisation of local real estate. The chapters in this book were originally published in the International Journal of Housing Policy.
