Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2017 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, grade: 2.1, Sheffield Hallam University, language: English, abstract: Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has been a complex topic, however its fundamental features have enabled it to shape the world we live in and is the backbone of many countries who would not survive without it. Being part of the European Union (EU), the United Kingdom (UK) was cocooned in a union full of rules and regulations that did not please its residents. The decision to leave the EU was taken and therefore these rules and regulations are not applicable and this in turn will drastically affect FDI. Despite being one of the world’s greatest powerhouse, Brexit offers a great threat to its industries that have had solid foundations within the EU as well as the workforce it holds as the UK holds over 3 million EU nationals. The UK offers an abundance of incentives for investors although these have been affected by 3 the UK’s top industries, Banking and Finance, Oil and Gas and Manufacturing with many companies in these industries agreeing that Brexit will have a negative impact on their business practices even with the government trying to get the best Brexit deal. This dissertation will critically analyse the literature on FDI and how the host country determinates will be used in order to analyse their affect and how it would differ after Brexit. The UK’s attractiveness for FDI was evident in the results that were obtained, which provided a similar theme to variables within the host country determinates that in turn allowed for recommendations to be made on the industries and how future practices could be handled.

Order your copy today and equip yourself with the knowledge to navigate the evolving economic landscape shaped by Brexit. The Referendum in 2016 which led to the Brexit was a game-changing event for both politics and the economy in Great Britain and the European Union. For the first time ever in history, a country decided to leave the EU. From the beginning it was clear that this decision would have both political and economic consequences. The UK was the second-largest economy in the EU and a very important location for the financial sector. The city of London is one of the largest business areas in total Europe. Before the referendum in 2016, many experts were concerned about the consequences of a “leave”-vote. George Osborne, the british minister of finance warned that the Brexit will cost every household 4300 pounds per year. According to the financial times, the GDP in the year 2030 would be six percent lower if they leave the European union, under the condition of a trade agreement between the two partners. This Bachelor ́s thesis will focus on the impact of Brexit on the foreign direct investment in the UK and the consequences for example on the job market. The first part will be the summary of the working paper. “The Influence of Brexit on the Foreign direct Investment Projects and Inflows in the United Kingdom”, that was written by Mihaela Simionescu and was provided in cooperation with the Global labour Organization (GLO).

Book excerpt: The main purpose of this study is to assess the impact of Brexit on the foreign direct investment (FDI) in the United Kingdom. As a novelty, compare to previous studies from the literature, the research focused on two proxies for FDI: FDI projects with the associated new and safeguarded jobs and FDI inflows as percent of GDP. Moreover, other methods were used to measure the Brexit impact on the FDI: a gravity model approach based on mixed-effects Poisson models and a counterfactual analysis based on differences-to-differences estimators. The main results indicated that the number of FDI projects might decrease after Brexit by 65% till 90%. A higher increase by 97% is expected to the number of new and safeguarded jobs. Even if FDI inflows in the UK significantly increased compared to the rest of OECD countries because of the EU membership, the UK should follow the model of Norway and Iceland after Brexit in order to avoid significant losses in the FDI inflows.

Book excerpt: This collection of papers from the NIESR conference at the British Academy identifies the channels through which inward investment can affect host economies, and provides quantitative evidence on the extent to which inward investment has acted to shape the size and structure of industrialised economies over the last decade. Leading authors in the fields of international investment and the behaviour of national and multinational firms combine innovative methodologies and firm-level data to enable empirical evaluation of the impact of inward investment. Detailed studies of aspects of inward investment in the UK are put into context through a review of existing literature and by comparison of UK developments to those experienced by French, Italian, German and US economies.

Book excerpt: This book, first published in 1988, examines the impact of multinational companies on the British economy and the British government’s policy responses. It assesses the effects of multinationals both on the national economy and on different regions and evaluates the benefits and problems brought by overseas companies. It looks at how government has attempted to entice multinationals to invest, and the UK government’s success in these attraction efforts as compared with other countries. Regulatory aspects of policy are also reviewed and evaluated, and consideration is given to possible new policy approaches. This title will be of interest to students of business studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we estimate the impact of increasing costs on foreign producers following a withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union (popularly known as Brexit). Our predictions are based on simulations of a multicountry neoclassical growth model that includes multinational firms investing in research and development (R & D), brands, and other intangible capital that is used nonrivalrously by their subsidiaries at home and abroad. We analyze several post-Brexit scenarios. First, we assume that the United Kingdom unilaterally imposes tighter restrictions on foreign direct investment (FDI) from other E.U. nations. With less E.U. technology deployed in the United Kingdom, U.K. firms increase investment in their own R & D and other intangibles, which is costly, and welfare for U.K. citizens is lower. If the European Union remains open, its citizens enjoy a modest gain from the increased U.K. investment since it can be costlessly deployed in subsidiaries throughout Europe. If instead we assume that the European Union imposes the same restrictions on U.K. FDI, then E.U. firms invest more in their own R & D, benefiting the United Kingdom. With costs higher on both U.K. and E.U. FDI, we predict a significant fall in foreign investment and production by U.K. firms. The United Kingdom increases international lending, which finances the production of others both domestically and abroad, and inward FDI rises. U.K. consumption falls and leisure rises, implying a negligible impact on welfare. In the European Union, declines in investment and production are modest, but the welfare of E.U. citizens is significantly lower. Finally, if, during the transition, the United Kingdom reduces current restrictions on other major foreign investors, such as the United States and Japan, U.K. inward FDI and welfare both rise significantly.
