Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper proposes an integrative counseling support group that incorporates principles from both multicultural and collectivist perspectives. The counseling group involves Mexican American adolescents and Mexican parents who have witnessed marginalization, acculturation, biculturalism, and lack of mental education; moreover, the proposed integrative approach combines cultural values of familismo, personalismo, and narrative and relational cultural therapy. A summary of the research documented the effectiveness of using these therapies with the Mexican population. The literature review suggested that group counseling helps Mexican parents and adolescents to feel connected and understood and features their collectivist views as strengths that can also support their community. The 13-week group employs a variety of approaches to give parents and adolescents tools they can use outside of group therapy such as the interventions of finding connections with others, mutual empathy, active listening, storytelling, and expressive narrative arts that can help alleviate symptoms of mental illness. Integrative theories have shown that Mexican families can become more resilient and improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and increase feelings of togetherness, self-esteem, and joy. Although research is needed, the benefits of the proposed group can include improving family acceptance, support, and increase of mental support.

Book Synopsis Ambivalence as a Potential Mediator of Associations Between the Acculturation Gap and Mexican American Adolescents' Well-being by : Janet L. Sayers

This book was released on 2016 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The goal of this study is to explore the relationship between a parent-child acculturation gap and both depression and self-esteem in adolescent children of Mexican immigrant parents. Using linear regression models, I tested the impact of the acculturation gap on adolescent self-esteem, then on adolescent depression. Next, I used a mediation analysis to test the indirect impact of the acculturation gap on self-esteem and depression through intergenerational conflict. Further, I used a mediation analysis to test the effect of the acculturation gap on both self-esteem and depression through conflict and family cohesion simultaneously. Finally, I tested the same constructs in a moderated mediation analysis using the Griffen formula, which specifically measures relational ambivalence (the presence of both simultaneous positive and negative relationship characteristics). I then compared the results of all mediation analyses to determine which model accounted for the greatest variance in the two outcomes. Findings suggested that while the presence of intergenerational conflict significantly strengthened the impact of an intergenerational acculturation gap on depression, the addition of family cohesion-signaling ambivalence-was not more predictive of depression than conflict alone. On the other hand, results indicated that while conflict alone did not predict lower self-esteem in adolescents, the presence of ambivalence did have a significant negative impact on self-esteem."--Abstract from author supplied metadata.

Book excerpt: Abstract: The purpose of this study was to explore the impacts of acculturation on family functioning from the perspective of second-generation Mexican Americans. The researcher conducted qualitative interviews via Zoom video conferencing and telephone calls. Participants were second-generation Mexican Americans born in the United States who had at least one parental figure that was born in Mexico. All participants were between the age of 18-32 years old. Data collected demonstrated various acculturation differences and highlighted the generational acculturation gaps among respondents and their parents. Psychological well-being was impacted in several ways including increased anxiety, frustration, and depression. This study adds to the body of literature on acculturation and aims to assist social workers with developing more specific services to support Mexican Americans with respect to their acculturation differences.

Christenson and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differences were found in measures of family leisure involvement and family functioning between Mexican-Americans and normative samples of Anglo-Americans. Findings suggest that family leisure involvement, aspects of family functioning, and sociodemographic variables helped to predict parent, youth, and family perspectives of acculturation. The independent and sociodemographic variables also helped to discriminate levels of acculturation for parents, youth, and families. Recommendations are given for commercial and community recreation programs targeting Mexican-American families, in addition to implication for further research.
Book Synopsis Cultural Stressors, Internalizing Symptoms, and Parent-child Alienation Among Mexican-origin Adolescents by : Wen Wen (M.A.)

This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study investigated the relation of various cultural stressors, parent-child alienation, and Mexican-origin adolescents’ internalizing symptoms at both between- and within- person levels across the course of adolescence. Positive parent-child relationships can be a critical buffer against cultural stressors for Mexican-origin adolescents. However, it is unclear whether positive parent-child relationships (i.e., low level of parent-child alienation) (1) protects against different types of cultural stressors, and (2) functions at the between- or within-person level from early to late adolescence. Method: The current study used a three-wave longitudinal dataset of 604 Mexican-origin adolescents (Wave 1: Mage = 12.41, SD = 0.97, 54% female) and conducted multilevel analysis. At the between-person level, overall low parent-child alienation buffered the adverse effects of ethnic discrimination on anxiety and the detrimental impact of cultural misfit on depressive symptoms. There were no significant within-person level interactions of parent-child alienation and cultural stressors on adolescent internalizing symptoms. The findings suggest that interventions should aim to reduce parent-child alienation throughout the course of adolescence to alleviate the impact of cultural stressors on internalizing symptoms among Mexican-origin adolescents
Book Synopsis Acculturation, Alcohol Expectancies, and Alcohol Use Among Mexican-American Adolescents by : Claudia Graciela Flato
Download or read book Acculturation, Alcohol Expectancies, and Alcohol Use Among Mexican-American Adolescents written by Claudia Graciela Flato and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current study was designed to examine the influence of cultural orientation on alcohol involvement among Mexican-American adolescents. Also, this study assessed whether cultural orientation predicted positive and negative alcohol expectancies for the effects of drinking one to two drinks or bingeing; and whether alcohol-use expectancies mediated the effects of acculturation on drinking practices. The participants were 300 Mexican-American high school students (M = 16.5, SD = 1.15; 178 female and 122 male) from a city along the Texas/Mexico border who were mostly self-identified as 2nd generation Mexican-Americans. The students completed the questionnaires regarding alcohol involvement, acculturation, and alcohol expectancies. Significant findings in the current study indicated a higher orientation to Mexican culture predicted higher levels of alcohol involvement for boys; whereas, a higher orientation to U.S. culture predicted higher alcohol involvement for girls. Also, identification with Mexican culture for girls predicted negative alcohol expectancies for low and high quantities of alcohol use.
