Book excerpt: Studies have sounded the alarm concerning the impending void of leadership that community colleges will face in the 21st century. One concern is that the pool of applicants from the traditional leadership pathway of existing community college faculty members has decreased dramatically in the past decade. This study explored faculty perceptions of the administration positions in California community colleges and their desire and willingness to step into these roles. The study also looked at the impact of the underlying issues associated with the motivation for life-work balance on the likelihood of community college faculty to apply for administrative positions. This study was conducted through a mixed-method design involving quantitative and qualitative data collection. A survey was sent to all tenured and tenure-track faculty at community colleges in San Diego County, California. There were 341 participants who completed the survey, yielding a response rate of 22.7%. The first research question sought to explore faculty's perceptions of the administration positions at California community colleges and their desire to step into those roles. Three themes emerged in analyzing the responses of why faculty consider going into administration: (1) improve the system or college; make a difference, (2) personal growth and challenge, and (3) salary and/or benefits. In addition, five main themes emerged from reasons why faculty would not consider jumping into administration: (1) workload, stress, and lack of flexibility for family time; (2) lack of job satisfaction due to bureaucracy, incompetent colleagues, or system; (3) love of teaching and profession; (4) lack of job security; and (5) going to the "dark" side. The second research question sought to explore to what extent motivators for life-work balance affect the decision of California community college faculty to leap to administration. The motivators for life-work balance do influence the faculty in the decision to jump into administration; however, there was no significant difference between Generation X and the baby boom generation's belief in achieving the balance. The study concludes with recommendations to community college administrators, board of trustees and faculty.

In a society that values youth, and whose institutions continue to perpetuate ageist attitudes, education can be a force in equalizing the opportunities available for lifelong learning. Community colleges are in a unique position to meet the learning needs of this distinctive group of learners, by providing an educational home for their educational endeavors. In furthering the research, the purpose of this case study was to examine how faculty perceived the third-age learner (60–80 years-of-age) in their college classes, in order to better understand how ageism affected the teacher/learner relationship. Ten faculty at a rural community college, shared their perceptions of and experiences with the third-age learner, through rich, thick descriptions. The findings of this research identified three primary themes which included (a) mindfulness, (b) reciprocity, and (c) reframing. Regardless of age, faculty were mindful of the individual, through their non-judgmental attitudes. In recognizing that third-age learners hold a wealth of experience and knowledge, a reciprocity developed, in which there was a mutual sharing of the teacher/learner role. This reciprocity ultimately leading to a reframing of the learning environment to a cross-generational dynamic. Through this cross-generational approach, third-age learners can have a positive impact while challenging ageist stereotypes, in creating a mutually beneficial learning atmosphere.

As such, it is critically important to understand the impact these institutions have on students and their ability to engender and support a more authentic democratic society. In the rapidly changing community college environment, examination of faculty voice in academic matters is of critical import. This study will show that curriculum control by faculty has eroded due to the imposed and hegemonic control of neoliberal education policies over the past four decades. While many may not recognize the oppressed subculture within higher education consisting not only of community college students but of community college educators, the system of community colleges in the United States has provided a canvas that has been reused and reshaped to serve the desires of the elite, as opposed to the desires and needs of current and future community college students to live, work, and exist in a democratic society. While all of higher education has been impacted, the extent to which community colleges have been isolated and singled out as centers of vocational education and training is unique within higher education. This study will investigate the interrelated aspects of the erosion of faculty voice, the vocationalization of curriculum, and the impact these factors have had on providing a community college education which assists students in creating and supporting a democratic society of praxis. To address current circumstances, I will claim the role of community college faculty in academic decision making as a matter of recognition of status, as well as a way to promote a more just and democratic society through educational processes based in an ecology of knowledges.

However, the development of leadership skills for traditional-age community college students can be challenging based on al traits and issues related to the community college context. The purpose of this study was to explore the perception of leadership and personal development of leadership skills among traditional-age community college students. After collecting data through interviews with thirteen traditional-age community college students, general inductive analysis was utilized to investigate the perceptions and experiences related to leadership development. By using the leadership identity development theory as a theoretical framework, analysis resulted in the themes Defining Leadership, which included leadership identity, influence, qualities of effective leaders, and qualities of ineffective leaders; and Developing Leadership, which consisted of the impact of others, impact of personal experiences, and perceptions of personal leadership development. Participants reported varied movement through the leadership identity development model based on both the examples of others and personal experiences. Millennial generational traits were both beneficial and challenging to leadership development, as was the context of the community college. Performing arts students also exhibited a more developed leadership identity than did participants involved in athletics. Community college faculty, staff, and administrators can find relevance in these findings as they continue to assist students in developing leadership skills. Additional research in organizational-based leadership development, as well as continued research on the impact of experience in leadership identity development, is needed.

Book excerpt: The study examined urban university faculty members' perceptions of their presidents' leadership role in urban school reform. The population for this study consisted of faculty members from five urban research universities. All of the universities are members of the Great Cities' Universities (GCU) coalition, an alliance of 19 public urban research universities that are collaborating to address educational challenges in their communities. The study entailed a purposive sample with universities chosen on the basis of their membership in the GCU. The subjects were 245 faculty members from colleges of education and colleges of arts and sciences at the five urban research universities. All participants completed the Urban Faculty Questionnaire (UFQ), a confidential, web-based questionnaire designed by the researcher. The questionnaire consisted of five statements about general perceptions of urban school reform, 30 statements about perceptions of the university presidents' leadership roles in the specific institutions' urban school reform initiatives, eight statements regarding personal characteristics and a section for optional additional comments. The statements corresponded to seven internal scales of analysis. The seven scales were (a) Perceptions of Urban School Reform, (b) University Structure and Culture, (c) Presidential Awareness, (d) Internal Relationships, (e) External Relationships, (f) Resources and Support and (g) Accountability and Recognition. The data show faculty believe urban schools need reform. Faculty also believe universities located in urban communities should be involved actively in urban school reform. Faculty generally do not take personal responsibility, however, for urban school reform initiatives at their universities. Faculty seem more aware of their presidents' external relationships than their internal relationships in urban school reform. Faculty tend to agree that their presidents build strong relationships with the local business community and with the local political community; however, they tend only somewhat to agree that their presidents build strong relationships with local public school representatives and local families and citizens. The study also reveals that no statistically significant difference exists in faculty perceptions of their presidents' leadership in urban school reform by the faculty members' academic college, academic rank, years of service at their current institutions, highest academic degree earned, gender and ethnicity.

The studies in Productivity in Higher Education use rich and novel administrative data, modern econometric methods, and careful institutional analysis to explore productivity issues. The authors examine the returns to undergraduate education, differences in costs by major, the productivity of for-profit schools, the productivity of various types of faculty and of outcomes, the effects of online education on the higher education market, and the ways in which the productivity of different institutions responds to market forces. The analyses recognize five key challenges to assessing productivity in higher education: the potential for multiple student outcomes in terms of skills, earnings, invention, and employment; the fact that colleges and universities are “multiproduct” firms that conduct varied activities across many domains; the fact that students select which school to attend based in part on their aptitude; the difficulty of attributing outcomes to individual institutions when students attend more than one; and the possibility that some of the benefits of higher education may arise from the system as a whole rather than from a single institution.
