Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 19th century, the Irish arrived in Cleveland in search of opportunity. Construction on the Ohio and Erie Canal in 1825 attracted many Irish seeking employment. After the canals were completed, many who survived grueling labor conditions left northeastern Ohio, but others became dockworkers and shipbuilders. The Irish who made Cleveland home impacted the city significantly. The Roman Catholic Church became a mainstay for Irish immigrants, and parochial schools offered Irish youth an education steeped in faith and knowledge. Irish pride is evident by enthusiastic participation in clubs, festivals, cultural organizations, and public service. Irish Americans are now one of the largest and most active of the many ethnic groups represented in Cleveland, as demonstrated by the much-anticipated and well-attended annual St. Patrick's Day parade.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Story of My Life, originally published in Czechoslovakia in 1928, is the engaging and informative autobiography of Frank Vlchek, a Czech immigrant who became a successful businessman in Cleveland, Ohio, during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The youngest of fourteen children, Vlchek was born to peasant parents in Budyn, southern Bohemia, in 1871. After attempting a career in blacksmithing in Bohemia, at the age of seventeen he decided to follow his two older sisters to Cleveland, home to America's second-largest Czech community. Vlchek worked a variety of unsatisfactory jobs during his first years in Cleveland. In 1895 he opened his own smithing operation, which after a long struggle was transformed into a successful corporation that specialized in the manufacture of toolkits for automobiles. acquisitions, and the successes and travails of his operation. Vlchek was often able to travel home to Czechoslovakia, and during those trips he noted the different cultural and political attitudes that had evolved between Czechs and their Czech American cousins. Vlchek's memoir provides a rare primary source about Czech immigrants. It also offers insight into a self-made man's life philosophy, illustrates relations between ethnic groups in Cleveland during the 1880s, and demonstrates the assimilation of a late-nineteenth-century immigrant in America. Readers interested in immigration history as well as the history of Cleveland will enjoy this fascinating autobiography.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cleveland Then and Now matches archive images with contemporary views of the same scenes to reveal the past and present of this fascinating city. Cleveland, Ohio, was founded in 1796. A prime location on one of America’s great inland seas, Lake Erie, and good land transportation links to the rest of the United States made the city one of America’s prime industrial metropolises by the early 1900s. Steel mills, factories, railroads, noise, and smoke dominated the landscape. Substantial civic buildings, grand mansions, and parks testified to Cleveland’s wealth, while pollution, poverty, and disorder testified to the consequences of growth. Over a century later, its evolving identity has roots in medicine, banking, law, higher education, sports, and even rock and roll. Tradition amid change is the story of Cleveland, then and now. Sites include: Public Square, Terminal Tower, Soldiers and Sailors Monument, First Presbyterian Church, Cleveland Public Library, Federal Courthouse, Old Stone Church, Detroit-Superior Bridge, The Flats, Central Viaduct, Union Depot, St. John Cathedral, Euclid and East Ninth, Erie Street Cemetery, Euclid at Playhouse Square, Millionaires’ Row, Clark Avenue Viaduct, St. Clair Avenue, Willson Avenue Temple, Gordon Park, Wade Park, Adelbert Hall, Cleveland Heights, Hartness Brown House, Little Italy, Lakewood and Bedford.
