Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Identification of Organic Compounds In teaching practical organic chemistry we have found the want of a convenient text-book dealing with the identification of simple organic compounds, such as is required by students working for the Intermediate and Final (Branch d) Examinations of the Institute of Chemistry. Moreover, many of the reactions and physical constants are not easily accessible, but are only to be obtained by a diligent and often tedious search through some of the larger books of reference. In this small volume we have endeavoured to bring together in a convenient form the principal reactions and physical constants of the most important organic substances. Our aim has been to eliminate, as far as possible, guess-work on the part of the student, and to provide him with methods by which he can readily detect the more important groups in the compound, assign it to its class, and then complete its identification by referring to the section dealing with the class to which it belongs. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Organic Analysis: An Elementary Course in the Identification of Organic Compounds The teaching of Qualitative Organic Analysis is gradually receiving recognition as an important factor in the training Of the chemist. In 1905, the subject was taught in only two or three universities; ten years later courses were offered in from fifteen to twenty of the leading schools in this country; and in 1918 the subject was prescribed for all colleges undertaking the training of chemists under the supervision of the United States Government. Only the armistice prevented the institution of this sweeping innovation in chemical curricula. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Method for the Identification of Pure Organic Compounds, Vol. 1: By a Systematic Analytical Procedure Based on Physical Properties and Chemical Reactions The phrase More Important Compounds used in the title is unavoidably indefinite; but the intention has been to admit all substances to the tables for which there is more than a remote chance that they may come into the hands (if the analyst as unknown compounds. Such a list naturally includes: first, all com pounds that may be isolated in a state of purity and without excessive difficultv from materials used in the arts, or from substances which occur somewhat abun dautly in Nature; second, compounds of minor importance which may easily be formed in the laboratory as by-products in reactions between substances of more common occurrence; third, many rare compounds which have acquired a general scientific interest either on account of their properties or as representatives of peculiar types. Very few compounds that could be purchased in the market in a state of purity have, been omitted except through oversight. The most important intentional omissions are: substances whose claims to recognition as distinct chemical species are not generally accepted; uncrystallizable syrups that cannot be distilled without decomposition; the oily and fatty glycerides; those glucosides and synthetic sugars of which specimens could not be obtained for examination. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines Proximate Organic Analysis: Identification, Separation, and Quantitative Determination, More Commonly Occurring Organic Compounds This little work has been prepared more especially for the use of a class of chemical students who devote a semester to the analysis of vegetable products and other organic mixtures, taking previously at least two semesters in qualitative and quantitative analysis. After working with this class for several years, without other aid than a manuscript digest of directions and references, the author is convinced that a compilation in this subject is desirable - not alone for students in special applications of chemistry, but for the convenience of every general analyst. Proximate organic analysis is not altogether impracticable, and organic chemistry is not solely a science of synthetical operations even at present. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of General Organic Chemistry The description of the chemical behaviour of organic compounds is arranged according to the result of the reaction, and not according to the action of the reagent. Though difficulties are met with in such a classification, it is, in the author's opinion, the best. The first and second editions of this work appeared in Swedish; the favourable reception they met with caused the publication of a German edition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Organic Chemistry, Vol. 2 The present volume (part II.) consists principally of a description of the aromatic compounds, and, together with Part I., forms an introduction to Organic Chemistry; The opening chapters of Part II. Contain an account of coal tar and its treatment. This leads naturally to a description of the preparation and properties of benzene, and to a discussion of its constitution in the light of facts previously dealt with the student is thus made acquainted with the principal characteristics of aromatic, as distinct from fatty, compounds, and is then in a position to understand the classification of organic substances into these two main divisions. The more important classes of aromatic compounds are then described, but in a somewhat different manner from that adopted in Part I., inasmuch as a general account of the properties of each class of substances is given before, instead of after, the more detailed description of typical compounds; this course is to a great extent free from the disadvantages which are found to attend its adoption at earlier stages, as the student has by this time acquired some experience of the more systematic method from a study of the summaries given in Part I.
