Book excerpt: This thesis explores the ideals of kingship, divine, human and mythological in the writings of Charles Williams, C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, examining their individual and overlapping ideas of a Creator-King, His attributes and His perceived purpose in creating. The nature of His creativity is examined, asking whether such activity is also found in His creatures, since they are made in His image. The thesis considers whether the Creator involved the assistance of demiurges, or simply created ex nihilo. The entry of evil into a perfect creation is looked at. There is an enquiry into whether the earthly kings and the fictional kings are seen as God's vicegerents. The enquiry involved researching in much of the fictional (and other) writings of the three authors, distilling their ideas about kingship, and finding the theological beliefs inherent in them. It was necessary to contextualise the three Inklings' concepts of kingship with the relevant parts of the writing and scholarship devoted to the place of kingship in extant literature. Reference was made to selected Old English poetry such as Beowulf, to the Arthurian Legends and to some Greek history. Where relevant, the Inklings' work was viewed in the context of Anglo-Saxon and Celtic history, and also with the scholarly exegesis of Old and New Testament ideals of Ancient Hebrew kingship, and its ultimate fulfillment in Christ the King. The Inklings' ideas of kingship in the modern world are important in the light of Christian belief, or the lack of it, in contemporary Britain. This significant aspect of the Inkling's writings reveals something of their distinctive contributions to English Life and Literature.
