Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Idea of the Soul Few conceptions can Show the universality and permanence, the creative power and morphological influence which have characterised throughout history the Idea of the Soul. To it we owe the conception of an order of spiritual beings, and of a spiritual world existing now and hereafter. At some relatively late stage of culture it became absolute in the idea of God. It is thus the basis of all religion. One typical case may be cited. The highest authority on the religions of China concludes that the human soul is the original form of all beings of a higher order. Its worship is the basis of religion in that country. Taoism was originally a compendium of customs and practices framed upon the prevailing ideas concerning the human soul. It cast these into a system of philosophy, alchemy, and religion. But neither its origin nor its influence is confined to the religious Sphere. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It has embodied itself in philos Ophy. It has mirrored itself in religion; it has been heard as the march of scientific progress. Above all, it is witnessed as the pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night guiding the destinies of man in the great evolutionary struggle leading him on to the Great Goal of life, - the development and full intensity of the spiritual consciousness. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Concept of the Human Soul: According to Saint Augustine The aim of this dissertation is to present and explain the concept of the human soul as it is found in the writings of Saint Augustine. The soul of man was for Saint Augustine an object of life-long study and investigation. He was not particularly concerned about the soul as such, the plant soul, or the irrational soul of the brute, except insofar as a study of these might serve to throw some light on the nature and activities of the human soul. His interest in the soul of man was not actuated by mere curiosity to know for the sake of knowing, but he sought to know the human soul as a means whereby he might arrive at a clearer and better understanding of the Supreme Being. The concept of the human soul as it appears in the writings of Saint Augustine is not set forth in a systematic manner, but the elements that enter into its make-up are found widely scattered through his various philosophical, apologetical, polemical, exegetical, and dogmatical works. He wrote a few special treatises on the human soul, but he never attempted to construct an organized philosophy of the soul. The present thesis proposes to collect and coordinate the philosophical fragments of Saint Augustine's doctrine of the human soul and to interpret these in the light of his mental progress. There is a tendency on the part of some commentators to over-emphasize the Platonic character of Augustine's doctrine of the human soul. It is true that those works which were published during the first few years of his career manifest the strong influence of his recent study of Neo-Platonism. The treatises, however, which belong to that period when he was Bishop of Hippo and one of the most renowned scholars of his day stamp him unquestionably as a Christian philospoher. It is indispensable to the correct understanding of Augustine's concept of the human soul that due regard be paid to the development which characterizes his doctrine. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Debate of the Body and the Soul The conception underlying the Debate of the Body and the Soul is very old. Two interesting passages in Plutarch show the idea m a rather definite form, and justify us in supposing that the comparative advantages or disadvantages accruing to Soul and Body' from their association in this life was a well-known theme in the discussions of the ancient schools. Along with other bits of antique lore, this general conception passed into the confused stock of moral, psychological, and religious beliefs that mingled with Biblical doctrines in the minds of the early Christians, and thus, reinforced or modified by divers traits from the Orient, it became a part of the medi aval consciousness. Among the documents which influenced the growth of the legend, an obscure, but significant, role was played by the apocryphal Vision of St. Paul, assigned to about 380 A. D and by an uncanny tale sometimes assomated with _st. Macarius of Alexandria, a holy man of the fourth century. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Immortality of the Soul As we peer into the starry depths on a clear night, when the noise of the day has softened into an impressive silence, undis turbed, our Vision penetrates to stars that retreat into mere points of light. The telescope is brought to our aid and there is revealed to us innumerable stars'far beyond the reach of the naked eye. We have no means of determining the distance to which the stars may extend in space beyond those within the field of view of the most powerful telescope. We are in the habit of placing boundaries to all existences that come within' the scope of our mental operations. We place limitations on all existences that come to occupy a place in space and time. We are aware of the limit of space, _in which the human body is con fined and the extent of its activities on earth. We are certain of the limited time allotted to the organized body in its career on earth. We are certain that the earth is limited in space and time. We do not doubt that there are regions in space, beyond the reach of the Sun's light. Although we can not escape the conscious conviction of the existences that are limited in space and duration, yet our minds are capable of apprehending that which does not admit of limitation. We can not get away from the truth that space is boundless and that we can form no con ception of the limits of its extension. How are our minds brought in touch with infinite space? What is that entity which we call infinite space? We can not apply our knowledge of mathematics, science and philosophy in demonstrating or prov ing infinite space. How then is the mind made certain that there is that which we call infinite space? We trace back the years of our lives and the entire line of our ancestors until we reach the first man. Our marvelous minds continue to revert still farther back into duration, through the ages that preceded man, until we enter into the thought of a duration that had no beginning. We are now convinced of the eternity that knows no beginning. What is time? What is eternity? We look about for the proof of this mysterious eternity, and we find that our mathematics, our smence and our philosophy can not fathom it. How are we brought to a recognition of infinite space and the eternity of duration? These truths are revealed to us by that indwelling power of the mind that was created in us, and which we call intuition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Universal Medium: A New Interpretation of the Soul In presenting the hypothesis set forth in this book, my aim has been to suggest a somewhat unusual point of view from which to reconsider all that has hitherto been given out as knowledge of the soul. The value of this attempt remains to be tested by the further understanding which time will bring, and by the increased receptivity to fresh ideas that may be expected from the new age. Have always been interested in psychology and so called psychic problems, and have spent much time in the past studying the theories of other writers on such subjects. Gradually I discovered that many of the ideas gathered from these sources refused to live together in comfortable association; finally, this lack of agreement was succeeded by an atti tude of mind which more or less harmonized my own observations and experiences with those of others.
