Book excerpt: A moving and universal picture book about empathy and kindness, sure to soothe heartaches big and small—now a New York Times bestseller and a perfect gift for any special occasion When something sad happens, Taylor doesn't know where to turn. All the animals are sure they have the answer. The chicken wants to talk it out, but Taylor doesn't feel like chatting. The bear thinks Taylor should get angry, but that's not quite right either. One by one, the animals try to tell Taylor how to act, and one by one they fail to offer comfort. Then the rabbit arrives. All the rabbit does is listen . . . which is just what Taylor needs. With its spare, poignant text and irresistibly sweet illustration, The Rabbit Listened is about how to comfort and heal the people in your life, by taking the time to carefully, lovingly, gently listen.

Book excerpt: Herein you will find 10 tales from the tiny island archipelago of Zanzibar - "THE SPICE ISLANDS" of old. Stories like "THE KITES AND THE CROWS" - which tells why African Kites always fly away from Crows. The story of "THE APE, THE SNAKE, AND THE LION" which tells of poor 'Mvoo Laana, Neeo'ka the snake and Sim'ba the lion, and how 'Mvoo gains riches for sparing the snake's life teaching him the lessons of trust, kindness and loyalty. You will also find the stories of "GOSO, THE TEACHER," "HAAMDAANEE," "THE MAGICIAN AND THE SULTAN'S SON" and more. But why should such a small island have such a rich heritage of folklore? As far back as 3AD Zanzibar was known to the Greeks and Romans. Later it was used by the Persians, Arabs, and Indians for trade and as a base for voyages between the Middle East, India, and Africa. Vasco da Gama's visit in 1498 marked the beginning of European influence. In 1698, Zanzibar fell under the control of the Sultanate of Oman and in the 1830's Said bin Sultan moved his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar. In the 1800's the Sultanate consolidated power around Ivory and the East African slave trade. In the mid-19th century as many as 50,000, mainly Negro, slaves passed annually through the port enroute to Arabia, Asia, Europe and the USA. The Zanzibar slave trade was finally abolished in 1873. After gaining independence from Britain in 1964, Zanzibar merged with mainland Tanganyika to form the modern nation of Tanzania. So, it is not surprising that this small island archipelago, just off the coast of Africa, should have such a rich and varied tapestry of culture and folklore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second book in a hilarious illustrated non-fiction chapter book series starring a savvy and stylish cockroach who guides the reader through an encounter with a charming -- and dangerous -- predator. Is this hyena drooling for tea and crumpets . . . or for you?! Celeste is a cockroach, and everyone knows that cockroaches are survivors, so who better to give advice on surviving an encounter with a polite predator? High teas are dainty meals with pretty teacups: you nibble tiny cakes, sip milky tea and chit-chat about not-so-important things like why doughnuts have holes and if fish have eyebrows. But Ruby the hyena is loud, ferocious and tends to slober. High-speed gobbling makes good sense in the wild, but it is a definite no-no in the tearoom! And Ruby just happens to be Queen of a very large clan of hungry hyenas. Will high tea be ruined by uninvited guests? Is Ruby peckish for something other than Celeste's famous cream buns? Using her vast knowledge of hyenas, Celeste comes up with lots of strategies to get through high tea in one piece. Many of her suggestions are dangerous, most are absurd, but all are based on true hyena biology and hunting behavior.

Timely and inspiring, The Hyena Scientist sets the record straight about one of history’s most hated and misunderstood mammals, while featuring the groundbreaking, pioneering research of a female scientist in a predominately male field in this offering by Sibert-winning duo Sy Montgomery and Nic Bishop. As a scientist studying one of the only mammalian societies led entirely by females, zoologist Kay Holecamp has made it her life’s work to understand hyenas, the fascinating, complex creatures that are playful, social, and highly intelligent—almost nothing like the mangy monsters of pop culture lore.

Book excerpt: /head Once upon a time there was a little girl called Alexandra who asked her daddy, “Daddy, please tell me a stoooweee”. Well this is my story on how I created thousands of children stories. These stories come from a world where animals of all kinds all talk and learn, like children, about life. Around the age of three my daughter got tired of me reading little kiddy stories and asked me “Daddy, please tell me a stoooweee”. So every night I would make up a new short story. One day, when she was 7 years old, I decided to tape these stories so she could hear them over and over. Well that went on for 7 more years with over 110 hours and over 3,000 stories. There are so many stories that I will have to write many more volumes. So here we are, the first book is published and now kids all over the world can enjoy them as my daughter did for many years. The time you spend with your child is most rewarding. Never get tired of loving, kissing and hugging them, no matter how old they get. Please view the book website by Clicking here. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As John Kurewa and his brother talked about a tragic bus crash that had occurred nearby, his brother said, "Well, that shows when your time to die has come, there is nothing you can do about it." Was it really God's will for all those people to die or be injured in that wreck? By together delving into the meaning of the event, and into God's nature, the author and his brother came to a more profound understanding of God's purpose regarding the events of our lives. Challenged by their discussion, and reminded that theology is for the whole church not just clergy, the author wrote Introducing Theology to Laity to encourage all Christians to engage in the study of God. Although written for lay people, the book doesn't water down its view of Christian theology. Instead, it explores clearly and thoroughly the doctrines of God, creation, humanity, sin, the problem of evil and God's providence, and the Holy Spirit, among others. Introducing Theology to Laity is an invitation to all believers to dig deeper into knowing God—through study and experience. As the author says, "God is not a thing to be scientifically investigated; rather, theology investigates faith—that living relationship in God."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Riveting . . . harrowing and propulsive." —The New York Times Book Review *One of The Most Anticipated Books of Fall 2021 (Kirkus Reviews, Publishers Weekly)* "This powerful story shouldn’t be missed." —Publishers Weekly (starred review) "With subject matter like this, you’d expect the book to be worthy, important, but hard-going. You’d be two-thirds right. The same qualities that prompted Toufah to break the barriers she did have allowed her to leaven the tale with humour, and a lot more of the good she encountered along the way than the bad that set her on her path." --The Toronto Star An incandescent and inspiring memoir of resilience from a courageous young woman whose powerful advocacy brings to mind the presence, resolve, and moral authority of Malala and Greta Thunberg Before launching an unprecedented protest movement, Fatou "Toufah" Jallow was just a 19-year-old dreaming of a scholarship. Encouraged by her mother to pursue her own ambitions, Toufah entered a presidential competition purportedly designed to identify the country's smart young women and support their educational and career goals. Toufah won. Yahya Jammeh, the dictator who had ruled The Gambia all of Toufah's life, styled himself as a pious yet progressive protector of women. At first he behaved in a fatherly fashion toward Toufah, but then proposed marriage, and she turned him down. On a pretext, his female cousin then lured Toufah to the palace, where he drugged and raped her. Toufah could not tell anyone. There was literally no word for rape in her native language. If she told her parents, they would take action, and incur Jammeh's wrath. Wearing a niqab to hide her identity, she gave Jammeh’s security operatives the slip and fled to Senegal. Her eventual route to safety in Canada is full of close calls and intrigue. 18 months after Jammeh was deposed, Toufah Jallow became the first woman in The Gambia to make a public accusation of rape against him, sparking marches of support and a social media outpouring of shared stories among West African women under #IAmToufah. Each brave and bold decision she made set Toufah on the path to reclaim the personal growth and education that Jammeh had tried to steal from her, a future also of leadership and advocacy for survivors of sexual violence, especially in heavily patriarchal countries lacking resources and laws to protect women and even the language with which to speak openly about sexual threats and violence. “This terrific book had me on the edge of my seat, and sends an inspiring message to all women about the power of their voice.” --Anna Maria Tremonti “My (s)heroes do not wear capes... they call out injustices with enough grace and forgiveness to heal anyone that hears their story. Toufah is that graceful shero the world desperately needs.” --Celina Caesar-Chavannes “Toufah's story is horrifying and infuriating, but ultimately also hopeful and inspiring because of what she was able to achieve out of such darkness. To anyone who cares about addressing gender-based violence, this is essential reading.” --Robyn Doolittle
