Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hudson River, by Pen and Pencil: For Tourists and Others The traveler, indeed, should remember that effects of scenery depend very much upon the hour in which they are seen, and the conditions of the sky. A really grand mountain looks dwarfed at mid day, with the sun pouring down a blaze of light upon it, without a shadow to relieve its surface; the same mountain towers nobly with the sun shining behind it, and its top purpling in the twilight. On cloudy days, mountains and hills take a monotonous gray, and lose that brilliant vivacity which on a fair day shadow and sheen will give them. No one, in truth, knows what any scene really is for beauty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: “A commanding and inspiring biography of a river that gave rise to an art movement, progressive social quests, [and] landmark environmental cases.” —Booklist (starred review) Includes maps, photos, and illustrations Frances F. Dunwell presents a rich portrait of the Hudson and of the visionary people whose deep relationship with the river inspired changes in American history and culture. Lavishly illustrated with color plates of Hudson River School paintings, period engravings, and glass plate photography, The Hudson captures the spirit of the river through the eyes of its many admirers. It reveals the crucial role of the Hudson in the shaping of Manhattan, the rise of the Empire State, and the trajectory of world trade and global politics, as well as the river’s influence on art and architecture, engineering, and conservation. “A story of interaction between people and the environment and a story of continuing inspiration and renewal.” —Library Journal

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hudson River Valley was the first iconic American landscape. Beginning as early as the 1820s, artists and writers found new ways of thinking about the human relationship with the natural world along the Hudson. Here, amid the most dramatic river and mountain scenery in the eastern United States, Washington Irving and James Fenimore Cooper created a distinctly American literature, grounded in folklore and history, that contributed to the emergence of a sense of place in the valley. Painters, led by Thomas Cole, founded the Hudson River School, widely recognized as the first truly national style of art. As the century advanced and as landscape and history became increasingly intertwined in the national consciousness, an aesthetic identity took shape in the region through literature, art, memory, and folklore-even gardens and domestic architecture. In Sanctified Landscape, David Schuyler recounts this story of America's idealization of the Hudson Valley during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Schuyler's story unfolds during a time of great change in American history. At the very moment when artists and writers were exploring the aesthetic potential of the Hudson Valley, the transportation revolution and the rise of industrial capitalism were transforming the region. The first generation of American tourists traveled from New York City to Cozzens Hotel and the Catskill Mountain House in search of the picturesque. Those who could afford to live some distance from jobs in the city built suburban homes or country estates. Given these momentous changes, it is not surprising that historic preservation emerged in the Hudson Valley: the first building in the United States preserved for its historic significance is Washington's Headquarters in Newburgh. Schuyler also finds the seeds of the modern environmental movement in the transformation of the Hudson Valley landscape. Richly illustrated and compellingly written, Sanctified Landscape makes for rewarding reading. Schuyler expertly ties local history to national developments, revealing why the Hudson River Valley was so important to nineteenth-century Americans-and why it is still beloved today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showcased in these pages are nineteenth-century American drawings by Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, Sanford Gifford, Jasper Cropsey, William Stanley Haseltine, Walter Launt Palmer, and other members of the Hudson River school. Included are rarely seen works by Cole and other first-generation Hudson River school painters who popularized open-air sketching as a crucial preliminary stage of a completed landscape painting. By directly portraying scenic vistas and individual trees, rocks, and flowers, artists collected the necessary data for their grand studio canvases that would be true to nature. Gradually, these drawings were appreciated for their own artistic merit and even produced as finished pieces or presentation drawings. In an era before photography was commonplace, artists also used drawing as a means of recording and copying other important works of art. This catalogue is organized into two sections: sketchbooks with studies of individual motifs and preparatory records with presentation drawings. Elizabeth K. Allen is the author of From Stonecutter to Sculptor: Charles Calverley, 1833–1914.
