Download or read book Huai-nan Tzu written by Charles Le Blanc and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 1985-12-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Huai-nan Tzu (139BC) was viewed, for its great diversity of subject-matter, ideas and style, by traditional Chinese scholars as a composite work of the Eclectic School. It is the author's contention, however, that one overriding concern pervades the work: the attempt to define the essential conditions for a Taoist political utopianism. The present study emphasizes Chapter Six of Huai-nan Tzu in expounding the theory of kan-ying STIMULUS-RESPONSE; RESONANCE, which postulates that all things in the universe are interrelated and influence each other according to pre-set patterns. Only in the True Man, who is 'one with Tao' and 'attuned to the cosmos', does kan-ying attain its ultimate realization, 'the Great Peace' and 'the Great Merging'. 'After all,' concludes the author, ' it is in Huai-nan Tzu that we find the statement'

Book Synopsis Chinese Civilization and Bureaucracy by : Etienne Balazs
Download or read book Chinese Civilization and Bureaucracy written by Etienne Balazs and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1967-03-11 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in Hungary, trained in Chinese studies in Germany, Etienne Balazs was, until his sudden and premature death in 1963, a professor at the Sorbonne and an intellectual leader among European specialists on China. In this book, a selection of Dr. Balazs’ essays are presented for the first time in English. Arthur F. Wright, professor of history at Yale, and John K. Fairbank, professor of history at Harvard, have written a joint Preface and Mr. Wright has written an Introduction. Scholars and interested laymen will find a rich feast here in essays ranging over two thousand years of China’s social, economic, political, and intellectual history. A wealth of data supports the various theories Dr. Balazs develops, in a graceful translation by Hope N. Wright. Because Etienne Balazs regarded the Chinese past not as a curiosity but as a repository of relevant human experience, his essays are significant for anyone interested in the past and future of civilization. "If a reader should disagree with some of the brilliant points, he would still find them challenging and refreshing."—Journal of Asian Studies.

Book Synopsis Wang Fu and the Comments of a Recluse by : Margaret Pearson
Download or read book Wang Fu and the Comments of a Recluse written by Margaret Pearson and published by Center for Asian Studies Arizona State University. This book was released on 1989 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Wang Fu and the Comments of a Recluse by Margaret Pearson is an interesting, small academic foray into later Han political theory by a man who aspired to office, but refused to compromise his integrity in order to gain official appointment. Wang Fu is characterized as a student of Xunzi, who believed that capable officials were commonplace, though they were flawed and thus required oversight. He argued against what we perceive as nepotism as the maternal relatives of the empress would be well rewarded with high positions. He believes more so in character to justify an official appointment, though strongly believed in continued checks on their performance. The higher your office, the more you should be punished for failing to live up to the duties required of that office."--Goodreads
