Book excerpt: The bestselling classic that redefined our view of the relationship between beauty and female identity. In today's world, women have more power, legal recognition, and professional success than ever before. Alongside the evident progress of the women's movement, however, writer and journalist Naomi Wolf is troubled by a different kind of social control, which, she argues, may prove just as restrictive as the traditional image of homemaker and wife. It's the beauty myth, an obsession with physical perfection that traps the modern woman in an endless spiral of hope, self-consciousness, and self-hatred as she tries to fulfill society's impossible definition of "the flawless beauty."

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House I Live In: Or, Popular Illustrations of the Structure and Functions of the Human Body: For the Use of Families and Schools Idiomatic forms of expression, peculiar to our transatlantic brethren, a redundancy of words, and frequent inaccuracies in the subject-matter, probably arising from errors of the press, rendered not merely a careful revision, but, for the most part, an entire reconstruction, necessary. Besides this, some entirely new articles have been added, and a fuller exposition of many of those in the original given, in order to make the work more complete, and to enhance its general interest. It was deemed desirable to effect these changes, without abandoning, or too greatly altering the quaint and explanatory style of the author, from which the work derives much of its peculiar character; and it is confidently hoped that this object has been accomplished. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nineteenth century saw a marked rise both in the sheer numbers of women active in visual art professions and in the discursive concern for the woman artist in fiction, the periodical press, art history, and politics. The Woman Painter in Victorian Literature argues that Victorian women writers used the controversial figure of the woman painter to intervene in the discourse of aesthetics. These writers were able to assert their own status as artistic producers through the representation of female visual artists. Women painters posed a threat to the traditional heterosexual erotic art scenarios--a male artist and a male viewer admiring a woman or feminized art object. Antonia Losano traces an actual movement in history in which women writers struggled to rewrite the relations of gender and art to make a space for female artistic production. She examines as well the disruption female artists caused in the socioeconomic sphere. Losano offers close readings of a wide array of Victorian writers, particularly those works classified as noncanonical--by Anne Thackeray Ritchie, Margaret Oliphant, Anne Brontë, and Mrs. Humphrey Ward--and a new look at better-known novels such as Jane Eyre and Daniel Deronda, focusing on the pivotal social and aesthetic meanings of female artistic production in these texts. Each of the novels considered here is viewed as a contained, coherent, and complex aesthetic treatise that coalesces around the figure of the female painter.

Book excerpt: « Women's networks proliferated during the long nineteenth century in the Atlantic World and began spreading globally. Abetted by transformative changes in communication and transportation (the subject of the first chapter), women established links among themselves, sometimes informally, sometimes as part of formal organizations. Most goal-oriented networks, particularly those with social and political agendas, were personal, national or transnational in nature and inevitably excluded those who did not share the goal. Such activist networks and their influences are the main focus of Part One. Topics addressed include women's national and international networks in British temperance associations; British anti-slavery societies; Italian crime syndicates; the Istanbul region of the Ottoman Empire; Philippine suffragism, early twentieth-century Portuguese political organizations, and Great War relief efforts in France. The chapters in Part Two examine the diverse literary networks that women writers enjoyed, abided, or disdained during the long nineteenth century. Included are the themes of British female utopia and dystopia; how the work of some British women poets both affected and reflected the variety of networks in which they were enmeshed; the intensely personal networks of American writers Mary Moody Emerson, Margaret Fuller, Emily Dickinson, and Alice James; Salem witches reimagined as Romantic heroines by American novelists Caroline Rosina Derby and Ella Taylor; the efforts of Southern autobiographers Rebecca Harding Davis and Elizabeth Avery Meriwether early in the twentieth century to negotiate a place for themselves and the South in American national history; and the significance of women's networks present in the South and absent in Brazil as depicted in Evelyn Scott's 1923 memoir. »--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have seen a dramatic re-emergence of interest in ontology. From philosophy and social sciences to artificial intelligence and computer science, ontology is gaining interdisciplinary influence as a popular tool for applied research. Contributions to Social Ontology focuses specifically on these developments within the social sciences. The contributions reveal that this revived interest in social ontology involves far more than an unquestioning acceptance or application of the concepts and methods of academic philosophers. Instead as ontology permeates so many new areas, social ontology itself is evolving in new and fascinating ways. This book engages with these new developments, pushing it forward with cutting-edge new material from leading authors in this area, from Roy Bhaskar to Margaret Archer. It also explicitly analyzes the relationship between the new ontological projects and the more traditional approaches. This book will be of great interest to students and researchers alike across the social sciences and particularly in philosophy, economics and sociology.
