Book excerpt: In How to Lose the Hounds Celeste Winston explores marronage—the practice of flight from and placemaking beyond slavery—as a guide to police abolition. She examines historically Black maroon communities in the Maryland suburbs of Washington, DC, that have been subjected to violent excesses of police power from slavery until the present day. Tracing the long and ongoing historical geography of Black freedom struggles in the face of anti-Black police violence in these communities, Winston shows how marronage provides critical lessons for reimagining public safety and community well-being. These freedom struggles take place in what Winston calls maroon geographies—sites of flight from slavery and the spaces of freedom produced in multigenerational Black communities. Maroon geographies constitute part of a Black placemaking tradition that asserts life-affirming forms of community. Winston contends that maroon geographies operate as a central method of Black flight, holding ground, and constructing places of freedom in ways that imagine and plan a world beyond policing.

Book excerpt: It’s been two months since Dr. Janet Watson accepted an offer from Georgetown University Hospital. The training for her new high-tech arm is taking longer than expected, however, leaving her in limbo. Meanwhile, her brilliant friend and compatriot, Sara Holmes, has been placed on leave—punishment for going rogue during their previous adventure. After an extremist faction called the Brotherhood of Redemption launches a failed assassination attempt on the president that causes mass destruction, Holmes, who is now operating in the shadows, takes on the task of investigating the Brotherhood. Holmes is making progress when she abruptly disappears. When Watson receives a mysterious message from Holmes’s cousin Micha that indicates that Sara Holmes’s disappearance might be connected to the Brotherhood and to Adler Industries, Watson and Micha go on a high-stakes mission to reunite with Holmes once more. Together, Watson, Holmes, and Micha embark on a thrilling, action-packed journey through the deep South to clear Holmes’s name, thwart the Brotherhood’s next move, and most important, bring their nemesis to justice for the atrocities she’s committed in the New Civil War.

Book excerpt: Former Marine sniper and CIA target man Atticus Steed, turned professional hit man, now only takes down special targets...people who for one reason or another have literally gotten away with murder. Directed by an unknown, unseen employer who identifies himself simply as Omega, Steed receives his sketchy instructions for the hits via text message from a burner phone. But who is Atticus Steed, really? And how does his employer gain knowledge about cases from all over the country...cases involving those murderers who for whatever reason have been set free by the system? Finally, who is funding the kind of money that pays the best hit man out there? Traveling with Steed is his beautiful lady friend, Maria Cortez, who believes from Atticus' night and day surveillance, he is simply a high-priced private investigator for a large nationwide detective firm. Only days after they met two years before and fell in love, she gave up a career to go on the road with him, finding herself enjoying not only their ever-developing relationship but a lavish lifestyle made possible by the man about whom she actually knows very little. But as she now seems to be tiring of the hotels, boredom and nomadic life, she doesn't realize that Atticus' non-committal attitude in their relationship is actually his way of keeping her from danger. Hot on Steed's trail are two tenacious Special Agents for the FBI, John Hickcock and Maggie Larsen, who having figured out who he is, find that their investigation of him leads them to the very hierarchy of the Department of Justice. As the agents continue tracking Steed, they are suddenly alarmed to learn the name of his next target. But will Steed carry out the hit? If he refuses, he knows there will be a new and final target in the making. Him. Will you hope he is caught or root for him to get away? Down to the last chapter, you still may not have your mind made up.

King of the May – Book 3 of The Hounds of Annwn. George Talbot Traherne, the human huntsman for the Wild Hunt, had hoped to settle into a quiet life with his new family, but it was not to be. Gwyn ap Nudd, Prince of Annwn, has plans to secure his domain in the new world from the overbearing interference of his father Lludd, the King of Britain. The security of George's family is bound to that of his overlord, and he vows to help. But when he and his companions stand against Lludd and his allies at court, disaster overturns all their plans and even threatens the Hounds of Annwn themselves. George and his patron, the antlered god Cernunnos, must survive a subtle attack that undermines them both. Other gods and gods-to-be have taken an interest, but the fae are divided in their allegiances and fear the threat of deadly new powers in their unchanging lives. George and his companions must save themselves if they are to persuade their potential allies to help. But how can they do so, attacked on so many fronts at once? Will he put his family into greater jeopardy by trying to defend them? DISTURBING THE FAMILY SECRETS COULD BRING RUIN TO EVERYTHING HE’S WORKED SO HARD TO BUILD. Bound into the Blood – Book 4 of The Hounds of Annwn. George Talbot Traherne, the human huntsman for the Wild Hunt, is preparing for the birth of his child by exploring the family papers about his parents and their deaths. When his improved relationship with his patron, the antlered god Cernunnos, is jeopardized by an unexpected opposition, he finds he must choose between loyalty to family and loyalty to a god. He discovers he doesn't know either of them as well as he thought. His search for answers takes him to the human world with unsuitable companions. How will he keep a rock-wight safe from detection, or even teach her the rules of the road? And what will he awaken in the process, bringing disaster back to his family on his own doorstep? What if his loyalty is misplaced? Tales of Annwn – A Story Collection from The Hounds of Annwn. THE CALL: A very young Rhian discovers her beast-sense and rushes to the rescue of an errant hound. UNDER THE BOUGH: Angharad hasn’t lived with anyone for hundreds of years, but now she is ready to tie the knot with George Talbot Traherne, the human who has entered the fae otherworld to serve as huntsman for the Wild Hunt. As soon as she can make up her mind, anyway. NIGHT HUNT: George Talbot Traherne goes night hunting for fox in Virginia and thinks about the choices he has made. CARIAD: Benitoe and Luhedoc are off to fetch horses for the Golden Cockerel Inn in Edgewood. Luhedoc needs to relearn an important lesson about confidence. THE EMPTY HILLS: George Talbot Traherne shows a bit of the human world to family and friends, hoping to share some of the sense of wonder he discovered when he encountered the fae otherworld.

Book excerpt: Alyce Justice was beautiful. She was not yet thirty, and less than twenty-four hours earlier, with millions watching, she'd held up her Oscar for Best Actress. Now the police announced she's dead, brutally murdered at the Palisades Estates. Detective Lucas Horne is on the case, and it should have been a simple one. Justice died shortly after a party held at the Estates. The only attendees were the eleven residents, and only one of them had a motive for murder. Her estranged husband, Brandon Bradford, an immensely popular actor known as much for his temper as for his movies. His anger at her affair with her director, Richard Gold, had been splashed all over social media for months. Just one problem. Bradford had been passed out during the party and was sleeping it off at another house. His alibi was airtight. There were witnesses. It's up to Lucas Horne to unravel the mystery and bring a dead woman justice, but if Bradford was the killer, how could he have been in two places at the same time? The answer is both elusive and deadly.
