Download or read book Hound Pound Narrative written by James B Waldram and published by University of California Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a detailed ethnographic study of a therapeutic prison unit in Canada for the treatment of sexual offenders. Utilizing extensive interviews and participant-observation over an eighteen month period of field work, the author takes the reader into the depths of what prison inmates commonly refer to as the “hound pound.” James Waldram provides a rich and powerful glimpse into the lives and treatment experiences of one of society’s most hated groups. He brings together a variety of theoretical perspectives from psychological and medical anthropology, narrative theory, and cognitive science to capture the nature of sexual offender treatment, from the moment inmates arrive at the treatment facility to the day they are relased. This book explores the implications of an outside world that balks at any notion that sexual offenders can somehow be treated and rendered harmless. The author argues that the aggressive and confrontational nature of the prison’s treatment approach is counterproductive to the goal of what he calls “habilitation” -- the creation of pro-social and moral individuals rendered safe for our communities.

Book Synopsis Sam the Dog Pound Hound by : Donna Watkins
Download or read book Sam the Dog Pound Hound written by Donna Watkins and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-11-07 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sam The Dog Pound Hound is based upon a personal relationship my family had with Our Dog Sam, who was a hound my husband brought home from the pound. He was an older dog, very much in need of a home, and we were a family, very much in need of a family pet. What a wonderful member of our family Sam proved himself to be. He was a protector for our children, a companion to me, and a hard working ranch hand who worked alongside my husband each day. He didn't have a pure bred pedigree, but he was pure in heart and as loyal as they come. If you are considering bringing a pet into your family environment, I encourage you to first check into the dogs/cats who are being cared for by your local animal control center and humane shelter. These animals desperately need homes and you just might find yourself a hero there, as we did with our Sam.

Book Synopsis Another Good Dog: One Family and Fifty Foster Dogs by : Cara Sue Achterberg
Download or read book Another Good Dog: One Family and Fifty Foster Dogs written by Cara Sue Achterberg and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2018-08-07 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A warm and entertaining memoir about what happens when you foster fifty dogs in less than two years—and how the dogs save you as much as you save them. When Cara felt her teenaged children slipping away and saw an empty nest on the horizon, she decided the best way to fill that void was with dogs—lots of them—and so her foster journey began. In 2015, her Pennsylvania farm became a haven for Operation Paws for Homes. There were the nine puppies at once, which arrived with less than a day’s notice; a heart- worm positive dog; a deeply traumatized stray pup from Iraq; and countless others who just needed a gentle touch and a warm place to sleep. Operation Paws for Homes rescues dogs from high-kill shelters in the rural south and shuttles them north to foster homes like Cara’s on the way to their forever homes. What started as a search for a good dog, led to an epiphany that there wasn’t just one that could ll the hole left in her heart from her children gaining independence—she could save dozens along the way. The stories of these remarkable dogs— including an eighty-pound bloodhound who sang arias for the neighbors—and the joy they bring to Cara and her family (along with a few chewed sofa cushions) fill the pages of this touching and inspiring new book that reveals the wonderful rewards of fostering. When asked how she can possibly say goodbye to that many loveable pups, Cara says, “If I don’t give this one away, I can’t possibly save another.” Filled with humanity and hope, Another Good Dog will take the reader on an journey of smiles, laughs, and tears—and lead us to wonder how many other good dogs are out there and what we can do to help.

Book excerpt: A fascinating look at rescue dogs--where they come from, why every dog lover should consider adopting one, and how to make them part of your family. America's leading undercover animal investigator, Pete Paxton, has, among other exploits, infiltrated more than seven hundred puppy mills, worked undercover to close one of the largest and most infamous puppy mills in the United States, and shuttered the most notorious trafficker of dogs for experimentation in history. In this book, he shares stories of the amazing dogs he has rescued and brought to loving families, and also offers invaluable guidance and wisdom for anyone living with rescue dogs. Far too many people think rescue dogs have irredeemable anxieties, behavior issues, or other problems. In truth, rescue dogs can--and do--become wonderful companions. This groundbreaking book will help readers understand these dogs' unique ways of thinking, learning, and loving, and leaves no questions unanswered about the plight of dogs commercially bred in the United States--and what every dog lover can do about it.
