Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 2,0, University of Hannover (Englisches Seminar), course: Film Analysis, language: English, abstract: Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau's Nosferatu - Eine Symphonie des Grauens is a horror film classic from 1922. In 1979 Werner Herzog produced a movie called Nosferatu - Phantom der Nacht, in which he used Murnau's direction ideas. In this paper, I first analyse and compare the influence of colours and lighting on the atmosphere in both movies. Thereafter, I point out the differences in atmosphere between the silent movie with background music and the film with diegetic sounds. Finally, I focus on some differences in cinematography and editing in order to find out how different techniques evoke different feelings in the viewer. I do all this with the intention of proving that, even though advanced filming techniques have improved the understanding of details in movies, the genre of the horror film has not profited from the developments but, in contrast, runs the risk of appearing absurd or parodic.

Murnau’s seminal vampire film Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens on the 100th anniversary of its release in 1922.The movie remains a dark mirror to the troubled world we live in seeing it as striking and important in the 2020s as it was a century ago. This innovative collection of essays, with a foreword by renowned Dracula expert Gary D. Considered alongside I Am Legend and Interview with theVampire as one of the stand-out vampire stories of the last century - this brand-new novel is the first in over a decade from the remarkable and influential Anno Dracula series. Newman’s dark and impish tale begins with a single question: What if Dracula had survived his encounters with Bram Stoker’s Dr. John Seward and enslaved Victorian England? Fallen from grace and driven from the British Empire in previous instalments, Dracula seems long gone. A relic of the past. Yet, when vampire boy Johnny Alucard descends upon America, stalking the streets of New York and Hollywood, haunting the lives of the rich and famous, from Sid and Nancy to Andy Warhol, Orson Welles, and Francis Ford Coppola, sinking his fangs ever deeper into the zeitgeist of 1980s America, it seems the past might not be dead after all.

Book excerpt: 'Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror', directed by German director Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau in 1922, is not only regarded as one of the most intriguing and disquieting films to have been produced during the years of Weimar cinema but is also a key step in establishing the vampire as a cinematic figure and in shaping its connection with our subconscious fears and desires. The book's analysis of this hugely influential film, unravels the never-ending fascination exercised by the film over generations of viewers and filmmakers whilst at the same time providing the reader with a clear guide about the film's contexts, cinematography, and possible interpretations, covering the political and social context of the Weimar Republic and its film industry, the German Expressionist movement, the film's production, reception and difficult initial release.

We're headed to the Borgo Pass, to Castle Orlok, for a night of terror that will leave you screaming for the dawn... In the acclaimed silent film Nosferatu (1922), filmaking pioneer F.W. Murnau offered to the world what has been described as the most ""realistic"" vampire film ever made.Suppressed for many years by the estate of Dracula author Bram Stoker, the film was thought, for many years, to be ""lost."" Indeed, it was not lost, but, like the undead monster that is its subject, rose again from the celluloid graveyard of antique films, to haunt the world once more. Now, author C. Augustine has adapted the script fo this horror legend as a novel, one calculated to fulfill the gothic dread promised by the original film, and provide the reader with many dark, disturbing dreams.

Book excerpt: A fully updated edition of David J. Skal's Hollywood Gothic, "The ultimate book on Dracula" (Newsweek). The primal image of the black-caped vampire Dracula has become an indelible fixture of the modern imagination. It's recognition factor rivals, in its own perverse way, the familiarity of Santa Claus. Most of us can recite without prompting the salient characteristics of the vampire: sleeping by day in its coffin, rising at dusk to feed on the blood of the living; the ability to shapeshift into a bat, wolf, or mist; a mortal vulnerability to a wooden stake through the heart or a shaft of sunlight. In this critically acclaimed excursion through the life of a cultural icon, David J. Skal maps out the archetypal vampire's relentless trajectory from Victorian literary oddity to movie idol to cultural commodity, digging through the populist veneer to reveal what the prince of darkness says about us all. includes black-and-white Illustrations throughout, plus a new Introduction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of Herzog on Herzog presents a completely new set of interviews in which Werner Herzog discusses his career from its very beginnings to his most recent productions. Herzog was once hailed by Francois Truffaut as the most important director alive. Famous for his frequent collaborations with mercurial actor Klaus Kinski - including the epics, Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo, and the terrifying Nosferatu - and more recently with documentaries such as Grizzly Man, Cave of Forgotten Dreams and Into the Abyss, Herzog has built a body of work that is one of the most vital in post-war German cinema.
