Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Honour of the Army, and Other Stories The present volume contains a selection of M. Zola's short stories, most of them written several years ago, and contributed to the pages of a Russian review. They show their author in a variety of moods, and, if some may seem sombre and tragic, the reader will find others of a very different kind, one indeed which is all joviality, whilst another is brimful of quiet humour. 'Le Capitaine Burle, ' here called 'The Honour of the Army, ' is, I think, the only story by M. Zola in which a duel is described. I cannot recall any example of the kind in any of the twenty volumes of the 'Rougon-Macquart' series which otherwise so faithfully delineate French life in the days of the Second Empire; and the omission is a curious one, for duelling was quite as rife under Napoleon III. as it is under the present Republic. But for those who are interested in M. Zola's personality more interest attaches to 'Le Capitaine Burle' for another reason. It is a story of profligacy and dishonesty - peculation by a regimental officer - such a case, indeed, as unhappily arises from time to time in even the most rigidly regulated services. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Black Monk" is a poignant quick story by Anton Pavlovich Chekhov. This narrative explores the delicate balance between fact and imagination, delving into the mental complexities of human thoughts. The tale revolves around Andrey Vasilievich Kovrin, a talented and bold scholar who isolates himself in a geographical region to focus on his work. As Kovrin becomes more and more absorbed in his studies, he starts to enjoy bright hallucinations and dreams related to a mysterious black monk. This enigmatic figure serves as a manifestation of Kovrin's heightened highbrow and creative aspirations. As the road between reality and imagination blurs, Kovrin's intellectual kingdom unravels. The tale unfolds as a mental drama, examining the satisfactory line between genius and madness. Chekhov skillfully explores themes of creativity, the pursuit of understanding, and the dangers of unchecked ambition. "The Black Monk" is well known for its nuanced portrayal of the human psyche and its exploration of the thin boundary between inspiration and intellectual instability. Chekhov's storytelling prowess shines through as he crafts a narrative that invites readers to reflect on the difficult interaction of dreams, truth, and the toll of intellectual pursuit on the fragile material of the mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diana Gabaldon, bestselling author of the acclaimed Outlander series, weaves an engrossing tale of war, history, and suspense in this original novella—now available as a standalone e-book—featuring returning hero Lord John Grey. London, 1759. After a high society electric-eel party leads to a duel that ends badly, Lord John Grey feels the need to lie low for a while. Conveniently, before starting his new commission in His Majesty’s army, Lord John receives an urgent summons. An old friend from the military, Charlie Carruthers, is facing court-martial in Canada, and has called upon Lord John to serve as his character witness. Grey voyages to the New World—a land rife with savages (many of them on his own side) and cleft by war—where he soon finds that he must defend not only his friend’s life but his own.
