Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syria, the Holy Land, Asia Minor, &C: Illustrated, in a Series of Views Drawn From Nature Mad people continue even at the present time to be sent from the surrounding country, to be cured at St. Antonio: it is much more likely to drive sane people mad than to cure lunatics. The descent into this gloomy vale, as you pass hence, is so sad, the cliffs on each side so grim, that you think you are taking leave of the gay and blessed things of nature, of the sweet grove, of the sun-lit shore, of the shepherd and his pastures, of the beautiful sea and its wild waves. The convent is so overhung by the heights, as to- receive slenderly the beams of the sun: in the plate, which is taken at noon, a flood of light is thrown too lavishly on the roof and walls: noon is the only hour in which this could happen: during the greater part of the day they are cold and sunless. Each point, each nook or ledge of rock around, is covered with crosses which do not appear in the plate. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syria, the Holy Land, Asia Minor, Etc Most of the places illustrated in this Work had been visited by the writer, previous to the Egyptian invasion, when the land was in a state of comparative quiet, very favourable to a successful progress. To the Oriental traveller, the pleasures of memory are greater than those of hope: on his devious way, clouds and darkness often gather: the feuds of the chiefs may suddenly forbid all approach to the favourite ruin or city, imprison him in some hamlet or desert, where he is alone with his baffled hope and despair. Perhaps disease or contagion overtake him, where there is none to help. But when his warfare is over, and his objects attained, when his own hearth and roof-tree receive him - then memory wakes, to sleep no more. In the murmur of his native wave he fancies he hears the distant rush of the Nile or Euphrates: in the night wind the blast of the desert again passes by: and on the bleak moor that Rock of ages, that has been his shadow from the heat, again stands before him, desolate yet precious. These feelings may by some be deemed enthusiastic: but no man ever succeeded in an Eastern journey, plucked its roses from its many thorns, and, in spite of fears and sorrows, went on rejoicing in his way - who was not an enthusiast. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Life of Syria, Palestine, and the Holy Land, 1875, Vol. 1 of 2: From My Private Journal Writing for my own sex, my greatest ambition was to have offered this first attempt to the noblest and most beloved of our sex, our Nation's Idol, Her Royal Highness the Princess of Wales. I visited Vienna in May, 1873, partly - I may say chiefly - with the object of obtaining the desired permission, but Her Royal Highness was not there. At last a bright idea dawned upon me. I would embody my petition in a letter, and send it through the Embassy, and then - I was ashamed of pushing myself forward (a good old English feeling, I believe) - my petition and I disappeared together in the wild, struggling, unsympathizing crowd. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Inner Life of Syria, Palestine, and the Holy Land, Vol. 2 of 2: From My Private Journal As I am quoting from my journal of 1869 in 1874, I must remark that in noticing his life and announcing his death, the Damascus correspondent of a London paper said, He keenly felt the neglect of those he had served; and also, he was wounded in defending Burton and Drake at Nazareth. The writer, I am sure, never intended to cast a re ection upon us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, Vol. 5 This additional view of the facade of the Great Temple of aboo-simbel has been chosen by Mr. Roberts in further illustration of the subject. Descriptions, as far as the limit of our text allows, have been given of the various parts and aspects of this stupendous excavation and sculpture from the living rock; as well as of the original discovery of its existence by Burckhardt, the first access to its interior by Belzoni, and the further exposure of a part of its facade to its base by Mr. Hay. The effect of this wonderful Temple upon travellers who have been fortunate enough to visit it has been, without exception, of the same impressive character. Warburton, in The Crescent and the Cross, says Here, at the Temple of Osiris, a space of about one hundred feet in height is hewn from the mountain, smooth, except for the reliefs. Along the summit runs a frieze of monkeys, in long array; than succeed a line of hieroglyphics and some faintly-carved figures, also in relief; and then four colossal giants, that seem to guard the portal. They are seated on thrones, which form, with themselves, part of the living rock, and are about sixty feet high. One is quite perfect, admirably cut, and the proportions accurately preserved; the second is defaced as far as the knee; the third is buried in sand to the waist; and the fourth has only the face and neck visible above the Desert's sandy avalanche. The doorway stands between the two central statues. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Palestine Under the Moslems: A Description of Syria and the Holy Land From A. D. 650 to 1500; Translated From the Works of the Mediaeval Arab Geographers It may be useful briefly to indicate the method I have adopted in carrying through my work. In dealing with the Arab writers, I have been careful to give in all cases an exact reference to the text from which the translation has been made, in order that those who might question my rendering should be able without loss of time to refer to the original. I may be allowed to point out that all the information contained in the present volume has been obtained at first hand, for though I have been careful to consult the works of other Orientalists who have translated some of the texts I quote, the translations now published I have in every case made myself from the Arabic or Persian originals. In dealing with disputed points relating to the position of the Holy Places in Jerusalem, I have briefly stated the conclusions which I thought were to be deduced from the accounts given by the Moslem writers of the foundation and history of the various edifices. Theories in respect to the position of the Holy Places, however, form but a minor portion of my work, which has been to translate in full, and, where needful, annotate, the texts I had before me. I am in hopes that others may be able to build with the bricks I have thus fashioned, and again that from other printed texts and MSS., similar to those from which my materials have been drawn, other workers will bring to light further information that will correct and enlarge what has been gathered together in these pages. Four years have now elapsed since I began my work with the translation of Mukaddasi, during an autumn and winter spent at Haifa, under Mount Carmel, in Palestine. The result of four years labour is perhaps scanty. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, and Nubia, Vol. 3: After Lithographs by Louis Haghe, From Drawings Made on the Spot The fall Of Edom had been pronounced by the Jewish prophets, while it was scarcely more than acquiring the shape of a state. As the restless enemy of Israel, it was the subject Of Divine denunciation throughout the Whole course of prophecy. Its punishments were successively proclaimed by Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, and Malachi. By Isaiah it seems to have been taken as the emblem of the whole heathen world, and to have thus been loaded with accumulated malediction. The cruelty and corruption, the reckless vanity and furious arrogance of the national temperament, were divinely sentenced, and the general ruin was marked as irretrievable. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Giant Cities of Bashan and Syria's Holy Places My Lord, - I dedicate this little volume to you in grateful acknowledgement of that personal friendship with which you have honoured me, and as a humble testimony, from one who feels a deep interest in Syria's welfare, to those noble exertions which your Lordship made to heal the divisions and promote the prosperity of that unhappy land. I have good reason to know that the wise counsels you gave and the enlightened policy you advocated, while British Commissioner in Syria, secured the esteem and confidence of all parties; and I feel assured that, had the policy which you inaugurated with such success in the Lebanon been extended in the manner you proposed to the whole of Syria, the dawn of a bright future would ere this have begun to illumine its blood-stained plains and mountains.
