This time around, though, his leaving is with good reason. His sweetheart and his best friend are in love. Or so he thinks. Stranded at The Holly Tree Inn for Christmas on his way to America, Charlie recounts past inn experiences – an attentive reader might spot a reference to the urban legend Sweeney Todd is based on – and through his musings he discovers that things at home may not be what they seem. Charles Dickens (1812-1870) was an English author, social critic, and philanthropist. Much of his writing first appeared in small instalments in magazines and was widely popular. Among his most famous novels are Oliver Twist (1839), David Copperfield (1850), and Great Expectations (1861).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first of three Holly Trees opened in Chicago in June 1872, and Gollin says that "over the next few years dozens of other Holly Trees opened in other cities, many of them after consultation with Annie." An 1874 New York Times article refers to a "Holly-Tree Coffee-house Movement." The name was a tribute to Charles Dickens. It echoed the title of a Charles Dickens story, "The Boots at the Holly Tree Inn." The story merely names the inn in passing; the 1855 issue of Household Words was entitled The Holly Tree Inn and was a collection of pieces and stories about the fictitious inn. Gollin notes that Fields heard Dickens read the story on an 1867 visit to Boston, and Fields was touched by the "cheerful Christmas story about warm relationships that cross class divisions." The name was also a reference to "the beneficent holly tree at [Dickens'] graveside.

Book excerpt: This was originally published in 1855, being the Christmas number of Dickens's periodical Household Words. It was so popular that it was then adapted for the stage. It's a collection of short stories by Dickens, Wilkie Collins, William Howitt, Adelaide Anne Procter and Harriet Parr, around the theme of travellers and inns. I liked Collins's and Howlitt's stories the most.It begins with a story by Dickens, The Guest in which a gentleman on his way to Liverpool is snowed in at the Holly-Tree Inn in Yorkshire.
