Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yachts and Yachting: With Over One Hundred and Ten Illustrations The history Of the New York Yacht Club, for the first sixteen yea1s Of its ex istence at least, is practically the history Of American yachting. For the first five years it was the only yacht club in the United States. The Southern yacht club, with its head-quarters at New Orleans and its racing course on Lake Ponchartrain, was the second club organized, but it was purely a local organization; its yachts were small open boats, and it had no real national influence, The third club 'was the Neptune, at the'highlands, organized in 1850, one year later than the Southern; but it was rather -a'fishing than a yachting club, and like the Southern, its boats were for the most part open centerboards Of small size. It-may have had an occasional race on the Shrewsbury River, but it was simply a summer. Organi zation, and, except in name, had none of the character istics of a regular yachting organization. The Carolina club, with head-quarters at Wilmington (if I am not mistaken), North Carolina, ranks fourth in point Of age, but was Of no importance ex cept, perhaps, locally. It was organized in 1854. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Yachts and Yachting It was not until February had waned, and March had come that his heart went strongly back to his old love over there in the boat-yard, and his steps turned toward her. The approach to the yard was muddy; snow and ice still lingered, and was there mingled with mud. Rubber boots were as yet in the locker, with old trousers, soiled and well-beloved sweaters, ancient and respected hats, and other gear that made life on the boat one of serene and unfashionable pleasure. Without these appurtenances an inspection of the boat could not be complete; it could not be intimate; but there was assurance she had wintered well, from the friendly old yard - master, bearded and wrinkled, past fourscore and still loving a boat as when a lad; and, this, with the Spring air, and a casual look at the old boat under her Winter coverlet, was enough to rouse a feeling to which there is no fellow in the heart of man, - the spur to independent action, the lust of roving, the desire to be free of everybody on shore, and, with started sheets, to sail away out of the city's harbor to some snug and private cove of his own among the rocks beyond the headland. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of Yachting: Voyage the First This Volume of the Romance of Yachting will probably fall into the hands of most persons of intelligence going to sea, whether for pleasure or professmnally and it is likely, also, that it will form an addition to nautical libraries generally. It is proper, therefore, at the outset, for the author to speak of the design of the work. It has been framed mainly with a view to call the attention of Yachters, to the several phenomena ordinarily occurring at sea and on ship-board; but it is by no means so closely confined to nautical matters and technicalities, that landsmen may not read it with profit, and, 'it is hoped, with interest. The old and expe rienced seaman may, haply, also peruse it with amusement and Indulgence and the younger branch of the same profession with instruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Corinthian Yachtsman, or Hints on Yachting Who was the first yachtsman, and what sort of a craft was the first yacht? Is a question that is not unfrequently asked by inquirers into the origin of our national sport, and, to the majority of persons, a rather puzzling one. That yachting as understood at present in England, dates from a comparatively modern period, it would be folly to deny at the same time there is little doubt that, long anterior to the reign of Charles II., who is popularly supposed to have introduced a taste for yacht sailing into England, the inhabitants of these islands disported themselves on the water in boats. Have we not historical evidence to prove that many of our kings and princes, since the conquest, kept sailing boats for their own pleasure? Of course sailing vessels were first used as a means of transport only, but when it was found how much pleasure and enjoyment could be extracted out of such craft, vessels built for the sole purposes of pleasure naturally came into vogue. In the East Indies the Rajahs and their courtiers possessed swift sailing boats, in which they sailed about for amusement at the time of Vasco de Gama, and there is every reason to believe that such was also the case prior to the invasion of Alexander the Great. Readers of Plutarch will also remember many references to pleasure trips by water. Like the Chinese, the natives of India have not altered the form or shape of their sailing vessels in any material degree since they were first visited by Europeans and from careful researches, it is evident they reached their present proficiency in naval architecture centuries before the christian era.
