Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Around Central Islip focuses on a modern renaissance village that evolved through numerous and diverse cultures. It was a small English settlement of the 1800s when "Come to Central Islip, Good Work, Good Pay" was advertised in the newspapers in Ireland. This brought an influx of settlers from nearly every county in Ireland. The area became known as "Little Ireland in America." At the turn of the century, Central Islip housed one of the largest psychiatric centers in the country. Village life centered around this establishment for many decades. Decentralization of the hospital in 1955 resulted in the abandonment of numerous buildings with a degenerative effect on the village; blighted neighborhoods became commonplace. The transformation brought about by the arrival of the New York Institute of Technology resulted in the community's revitalization and beautification. Today, Central Islip is a vibrant and dynamic community.

Book excerpt: Growing up in a small Long Island town in the 50's and 60s, we lived away from it all in what people called 'the sticks.' West of us nearly fifty miles was New York. We simply referred to it as 'the city.' As the years went by, the city kept moving closer and closer. New faces were added to the town of the Millers, the Smiths and the Andersons. They came from Brooklyn mostly and had names that either began with the letter 'O' or ended with it. Our fathers had special names for these immigrants, but our mothers begged us not to repeat them. You could name any sport and we had enough for two teams. Eventually, each team was integrated with talent and geography to ensure harmony and our future. In the end, we made each other better than we ever would have been apart.

Book excerpt: In contrast to and predating Long Island's famous Gold Coast (the North Shore), communities along the Great South Bay were home to hundreds of less publicized, yet equally impressive, mansions and historic houses These homes were once owned by prominent captains of industry, popular entertainment figures, and movers and shakers of the day, such as the Bourne, Cutting, Gardiner, Gulden, Gustivino, Guggenheim, Hollins, and Vanderbilt families. Long Island: Historic Houses of the South Shore explores the South Shore's famous resident personalities, including Schuyler Parsons, Fred Astaire, Anita Stewart, and Robert Pinkerton. The lifestyle of the South Shore is also portrayed, including activities like hunting and fishing as well as the famous beaches that served as tourist attractions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long Island has been in the corridors of almost all major turning points of American history, but Long Island has been overlooked as a battleground of the civil rights movement. Since early colonization by the English settlers in the 17th century, the shadow of slavery has bequeathed a racial caste system that has directly or indirectly been enforced. During World War II, every member of society was asked to participate in ending tyranny within European and Asian borders. Homeward-bound black soldiers expected a societal change in race relations; instead they found the same racial barriers they experienced prior to the war. They were refused homes in developments such as Levittown, denied mortgages, and had their children face limited educational opportunities. Collective efforts from organizations such as Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) employed civil disobedience as a tactic to fracture racial barriers.
