And when we have reached the conclusion of this Book, we shall be in a position to see precisely why a war, apparently so indecisive, should suffice for the conclusion of a peace which has now lasted for forty years, and bids fair to last as many more. But in entering upon this narrative, we must observe, that this "Second War," (as it has been called,) in relation to World History bears by no means so prominent a place as we might suppose, from seeing the account that is made of it in the United States. And the reason manifestly is, that the principles, to maintain which, ostensibly, America flung down her gage, were not the real grounds of the conflict. They bore no nearer relation to the actual combat, than the question "whose lady's eyes were the brightest," which was - so say the chronicles of chivalry - the avowed reason for mortal encounter between every two doughty and errant knights, who chanced to meet, after having sallied forth for the very purpose of achieving some notable adventure in arms. Of the part in this war which Jefferson took, we have spoken in the chapter upon the Foreign Affairs of his Administration; and we think that few can trace carefully the line of policy which he adopted, without ascribing it mainly to him; although the party opposed to it gave it the title of "Madison's war." How adroitly the great Democratic chieftain contrived, without implicating himself in the responsibility of conducting them, to make hostilities unavoidable, has been fully shown. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of North America, Vol. 1: Discovery and Exploration The statement that we have quoted in our opening para graph but voiced the need that was appreciated throughout the scholastic world. All students desired*a comprehen sive history of America. The stimulus given to historical writing by the lack of such a work found result in the activity of many authors, but, curiously enough, not in at tempts to produce the work needed, but to supply mate rials from which it might be constructed. For example, the last quarter of the nineteenth century was prolific in historical monographs and treatises. Hundreds of well equipped students with valuable resources at their command collected and gave to the world the product of their re search - the data buried in source material. These mono graphic publications, usually written in the form of theses, were of a nature to preclude their wide circulation; they were strictly academic in style and were of no interest to the general reader and, because of their restricted field, of comparatively narrow value to the historian. Yet this monographic literature must not be underestimated, for it was of great value to the limited number of historians seeking information upon the particular subject treated by the monographist. But the theses did not go far toward solving the problem of the production of a comprehensive history. The treatises were a step further in that direction. They were, it is true, limited in scope, but that limitation was not so destructive to their popularity as in the case of the thesis literature, for they were broader in treatment and had more or less perspective. The majority of such publi cations were accurate and had in them elements of interest. Textbooks were published in abundance, but from their nature they cannot be included among comprehensive his tories, nor can those standard and scholarly works upon limited historical periods, which have at infrequent intervals during the last twenty-five years been welcomed by students. During the period under consideration a few general his tories have been published. These are confessedly sketchy, and, with only two exceptions, they have not been written by men of standing among scholars. In these two in stances, the authors have been handicapped by the limits of space and by the fact that no one man is able to write from his own knowledge of the details of American history in the whole, and within the limits imposed by the com mercial necessities of publication produce by his own re search a comprehensive history of the United States, to say nothing of that of North America. A writer undertaking the task must depend on secondary authorities; and, as a rule, he incorporates most of their errors along with their correct statements of fact. No more glaring example of this fallibility of historical writers attempting a task too large can be found than in a recent pretentious general his tory in the compilation of which the author was obliged by the circumstances of production to depend largely on secondary authorities, with the result that more than five hundred errors have been discovered in a single volume. It will be observed that the book has two themes, as different in character as the themes for voice and piano in Schubert's "Frühlingsglaube," and yet so closely related that the one is needful for an adequate comprehension of the other. In order to view in their true perspective the series of events comprised in the Discovery of America, one needs to form a mental picture of that strange world of savagery and barbarism to which civilized Europeans were for the first time introduced in the course of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, in their voyages along the African coast, into the Indian and Pacific oceans, and across the Atlantic. Nothing that Europeans discovered during that stirring period was so remarkable as these antique phases of human society, the mere existence of which had scarcely been suspected, and the real character of which it has been left for the present generation to begin to understand. Nowhere was this ancient society so full of instructive lessons as in aboriginal America, which had pursued its own course of development, cut off and isolated from the Old World, for probably more than fifty thousand years. The imperishable interest of those episodes in the Discovery of America known as the conquests of Mexico and Peru consists chiefly in the glimpses they afford us of this primitive world. It was not an uninhabited continent that the Spaniards found, and in order to comprehend the course of events it is necessary to know something about those social features that formed a large part of the burden of the letters of Columbus and Vespucius, and excited even more intense and general interest in Europe than the purely geographical questions suggested by the voyages of those great sailors. The descriptions of ancient America, therefore, which form a kind of background to the present work, need no apology. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection.
