Book Synopsis Beyond the Local Church by : Sam Metcalf
Download or read book Beyond the Local Church written by Sam Metcalf and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2015-09-25 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2016 IVP Readers' Choice Award Many people have given up on the church. But that doesn't mean that they've given up on God or Christianity. In many cases, it was merely that local church congregations were not the best context for missional people to live out their sense of God's call. The good news is that God is raising up vibrant movements of Christians in a vast array of vocations around the world: disciple-making ministries, missions, relief and development, social activism, advocacy and much more. These are all strategic ways to live for the kingdom—in venues beyond the local church. Wherever movements of the gospel have occurred, visionary people and apostolic structures have been essential. Mission leader Sam Metcalf shows how God has always worked through entrepreneurial individuals and organizations that launched out in fresh ways. He gives biblical and missiological foundations for missional movements, showing that what has often been called "parachurch" is an equally valid manifestation of the church. Affirming the strengths of apostolic personalities, Metcalf shows how they can be deployed to cross cultural barriers, renew secular societies and transform the nations with the power of the gospel. God may be inviting you to join what he is doing around the world. Answer the call and discover how God can use you beyond your imagination.

Download or read book The Church written by Gerald Bray and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Renowned evangelical theologian Gerald Bray provides a clear and coherent account of the church in biblical, historical, and theological perspective. He tells the story of the church in its many manifestations through time, starting with its appearance in the New Testament, moving through centuries of persecution and triumph, and discussing how and why the ancient church broke up at the Reformation. Along the way, Bray looks at the four classic marks of the church--its oneness, holiness, catholicity, and apostolicity--and illustrates how each of these marks has been understood by different Christian traditions. The book concludes with a look at the ecumenical climate of today and suggests ways that the four characteristics of the church can and should be manifested in our present global context. This accessible introduction to the church from an evangelical perspective explores ecclesiology through the lenses of church history and doctrine to reveal what it means for us today. Bray discusses the church as a living reality, offering practical ways churches and individuals can cooperate and live together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intended for upper division college students, seminarians, and pastors, The Community of Jesus delivers a biblical, historic, systematic, and missional theology of the church. Today the word church provokes wide-ranging reactions and generates discussion on a variety of issues among Christians and non-Christians alike. In order to sort through this maze of responses and topics, a biblical and theological foundation must be laid that provides a clear vision of the church of the Lord Jesus Christ and its significance in God’s eternal purpose. With extensive pastoral, teaching, missions, and administrative experience, this team of contributors carefully sets forth the biblical teachings concerning the church and then builds on this core material, relating the theology of the church to salvation history, church history, God’s glory, and God’s mission: • Paul R. House, “God Walks with His People: Old Testament Foundations”• Andreas J. Köstenberger, “The Church According to the Gospels”• Kendell H. Easley, “The Church in Acts and Revelation: New Testament Bookends”• David S. Dockery, “The Church in the Pauline Epistles”• Ray Van Neste, “The Church in the General Epistles”• James A. Book Synopsis The Church according to Paul by : James W. Thompson
Download or read book The Church according to Paul written by James W. Thompson and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2014-09-09 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid conflicting ideas about what the church should be and do in a post-Christian climate, the missing voice is that of Paul. The New Testament's most prolific church planter, Paul faced diverse challenges as he worked to form congregations. Leading biblical scholar James Thompson examines Paul's ministry of planting and nurturing churches in the pre-Christian world to offer guidance for the contemporary church. The church today, as then, must define itself and its mission among people who have been shaped by other experiences of community. Thompson shows that Paul offers an unprecedented vision of the community that is being conformed to the image of Christ. He also addresses contemporary (mis)understandings of words like missional, megachurch, and formation.
Book Synopsis Churches Of God In Christ Usa Official Manuel by : Bishop J.L. Payne
Download or read book Churches Of God In Christ Usa Official Manuel written by Bishop J.L. Payne and published by Church House Pub. This book was released on 2004 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Manuel for Ministers and Local ChurchesBuilding the Local Churches in their structure with others in fellowshipLocal Churches maintaining their AutonomyAutonomy Autonomy is independence and self-government. It is each local church separately submitting, spiritually speaking to the Headship of Jesus and doing the work that God has assigned to the local church, with the ability and means available, preaching and edification (I Timothy 3:15, Ephesians 4:16; Acts 13:1). Submitting to one another in the fear of the Lord, bond of Peace establishing New Testament order, structure, and pattern. The general church is important in serving its role as a body of churches universally. Autonomy is not having a central or controlling board to maintain the doctrinal and moral purity of each local church within that union (this is denominationalism). Such a practice is a violation of the autonomy taught in the scriptures and the New Testament church. A local church must be challenged if they believe and practice a false teaching or doctrine contrary to scriptures and New Testament church. Christ as head of the church challenges such actions done in His name. The blessing of brothers and churches in fellowship gives accountability. We are able to answer to one another, thus giving protection and support in ministry worldwide. We must have the right to reveal and challenge the word in us to help us. This practice is seen throughout the New Testament. This is not a violating of our autonomy! It is obvious that God designed autonomy in both the local and universal church to be a safeguard. When one local church went astray, it did not automatically affect other local churches, even when they were in the same geographic area. For instance, Pergamos held the false doctrine of the Nicolatians, but this did not affect the other six churches within the same region as Pergamos (Revelation 2:3). We must appreciate the fact that the false beliefs of Pergamos were revealed and challenged by John and Jesus to the knowledge of the local church at Ephesus, Smyrna, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea. A violation of autonomy would have been for the local church at Ephesus to demand, as a church, that Pergamos repent and conform. Preachers, in the epistles were repeatedly seen exposing and challenging error in local churches where they were not a member. Autonomy is meant to be protection against group alliance contamination, but not exemption from liable accountability, and responsibility of actions. The challenge against error or exposure of sin and false doctrine must always be maintained in preaching the pure gospel! We must answer to the gospel we preach in our churches and the world. The truth is that the autonomy of local churches in the early church of the First Century is clear. The history of these primitive churches total commitment to the risen Lord gave them the Power to turn the world upside down, thus right side up. They established fully Christs presence in the earth a local and universal order."
