Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Southern Methodism on the Pacific Coast I accepted the duty with no high estimate of my ability to meet the demands of the Conference. I had read much of Church Notory, some of it contemporary history, and from personal ob servation I knew it to he an exceedingly diļ¬‚icult task to be a correct, faithful historian. I knew there were currents of fact not! Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Southern Methodism on the Pacific Coast At the Conference held in Santa Rosa, October, 1877, my brethren of the Pacific Conference, by formal resolution, requested me to prepare the material for a History of Southern Methodism on the Pacific. I was, even then, the only effective member of the Conference who was present at the organization of the body, and who had been intimately and actively connected with it in all of its history. I accepted the duty with no high estimate of my ability to meet the demands of the Conference. I had read much of Church history, some of it contemporary history, and from personal observation I knew it to be an exceedingly difficult task to be a correct, faithful historian. I knew there were currents of fact and thought into which a historian is liable to drift, sometimes unduly magnifying the actions of men, sometimes giving too great prominence to certain events, sometimes overlooking the true heroes and neglecting the record of events best calculated to reveal the truth. Notwithstanding this, at the call of my brethren I undertook the work, and to me it has been "a labor of love." I have lived over again the scenes of other years, and have held communion with the beloved companions whose voices have long since been hushed in death. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Southern Methodism, Including Church History, Doctrine, Polity, and Missions This book is part of the Advanced Circle Course for the training of Sunday school workers in the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. It is based largely upon the earlier book of the Circle Course entitled Doctrines and Polity of the M. E. Church, South, as written by Drs. Tillett and Atkins for the teacher-training Department when organ ized in 1901. In accordance with the interna tional teacher-training standards adopted by our own and other denominations in 1908, the book is now enlarged and revised. In ad dition to most of the matter contributed by Drs. Tillett and Atkins, sections upon Church History and Missions have been introduced, and the book in its present form consists of four instead of two sections, as follows Church History, by Dr. H. M. Hamill; Our Methodist Doctrines, by Dr. W. F. Tillett; Our Methodist Polity, by Dr. (now Bishop) James Atkins; Church Missions, by Dr. E. F. Cook. As a condensed handbook the little book, in addition to its use in teacher-training, de serves a place in the home of every Southern Methodist preacher and layman. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Methodism Within the Bounds of the Erie Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church, Vol. 1 As far back as memory runs we were accustomed to sit by the knee of our venerable paternal grand mother, who was converted in Ireland under the preaching of the Rev. John Wesley, and of hearing her describe the different preachers she had heard both in Ireland and in America, and especially since she came to the West. And our excellent mother, who united with the Church in the wilderness in her sixteenth year, used ofien to relate to us the scenes she had witnessed, and describe the ministers she had heard, and the revivals of religion she had known. And then our father obtained license to preach when we were quite young, and traveled and preached extensively as a local preacher, and assisted in revi vals and in forming classes, and from him we oh tained much valuable information. And \it was our. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Methodism in Arkansas For a number of years I have greatly desired to see a well-written history of Methodism in Arkansas, and sincerely hoped that some one thoroughly qualified for the work would undertake the task. In 1869, the Little Rock Annual Conference passed this resolution: "Resolved, That the Presiding Elders be, and are hereby constituted, a Committee on the History of Methodism in Arkansas, to collect items of interest connected therewith." If anything ever came of this action of the Conference I have never heard of it. In 1878, or near that time, the White River Conference requested Rev. John M. Steele to undertake the work of preparing a history of Methodism in Arkansas. He immediately began the collection of material for the work, and had succeeded in collecting much valuable information, but was called away by death before it was completed. It was left in such condition that no one else could properly arrange the material he had collected. I have undertaken to gather up the material that has been preserved in the minutes of the Annual Conferences, in District and Quarterly Conference records; in manuscripts written by some of our old pioneer preachers, in articles written for our Church papers; in memoirs of our deceased preachers; in letters from brethren and friends; in incidental allusion found in books, and in conversation with old residents of the State. From the information gathered from all these sources, I have endeavored to present a connected history of Methodism in Arkansas. In many instances where I had to depend upon the personal recollection of brethren, I found the dates to be conflicting, and in such cases I have reconciled the dates as best I could. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Methodism: In Northwest Kansas The last several years of the life of William H. Sweet were devoted to the collecting of material and the writing of this volume. He very much hoped to finish the task and see the book through the press himself, but death came suddenly on January 5, 1919. He had planned to publish the book at his own expense and ask the Conference to sell it for the benefit of Kansas Wesleyan University, and before his death he had talked to his children about the plan. They accordingly now desire to carry out his desire, and the present volume is published at the expense of the heirs of William H. and Rose A. Sweet. On its completion the entire edition will be turned over to the Northwest Kansas Conference and the proceeds of the sale of the book are to go to the Kansas Wesleyan University. The manuscript has been published, practically as it was left by its author. He greatly regretted that more complete material was not forthcoming in response to his many appeals, but the book contains much material that would no doubt soon have been lost, and those, who in the future will write of pioneer days in Northwest Kansas will find here a storehouse of interesting material. The Biographical Introduction has been added, though the author did not so intend, and has been prepared by his eldest son, Dr. Paul W. Sweet.
