Download or read book The Right to be King written by Howard Nenner and published by Springer. This book was released on 1995-08-04 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the theory and practice of the English monarchical succession from the end of Elizabeth's reign to the accession of George I. Tracing the transition from an uncertain rule to a crown in the disposal of parliament, Nenner focuses on the major routes to the throne over the long seventeenth century: hereditary right, conquest, and election. It is a study of the competing principles of parliamentary sovereignty and fundamental law, and the ways in which tension between dynastic expectations and national needs were addressed and resolved.

Download or read book The Library of William Byrd of Westover written by Kevin J. Hayes and published by Madison House Publishers, Incorporated. This book was released on 1997 with total page 680 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Stretch catalogue forms the basis for the present work. Since Stretch retained Byrd's shelf organization, I retain Stretch's organization. Though the purpose of this catalogue is to show what books Byrd owned, the nature of the surviving evidence makes it impossible to precisely describe the library's contents. The only titles that can be known definitely are those which survive with evidence of Byrd's ownership, those which were published in only one edition, or those which, based on Byrd's letters, diaries, and the Stretch and Zane catalogues, can be narrowed down to one possible edition. Consequently, the individual catalogue entries here have been organized to present information concerning all possible editions Byrd may have owned."--Preface.

Download or read book Against Popery written by Evan Haefeli and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 439 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although commonly regarded as a prejudice against Roman Catholics and their religion, anti-popery is both more complex and far more historically significant than this common conception would suggest. As the essays collected in this volume demonstrate, anti-popery is a powerful lens through which to interpret the culture and politics of the British-American world. In early modern England, opposition to tyranny and corruption associated with the papacy could spark violent conflicts not only between Protestants and Catholics but among Protestants themselves. Yet anti-popery had a capacity for inclusion as well and contributed to the growth and stability of the first British Empire. Combining the religious and political concerns of the Protestant Empire into a powerful (if occasionally unpredictable) ideology, anti-popery affords an effective framework for analyzing and explaining Anglo-American politics, especially since it figured prominently in the American Revolution as well as others. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, written by scholars from both sides of the Atlantic working in history, literature, art history, and political science, the essays in Against Popery cover three centuries of English, Scottish, Irish, early American, and imperial history between the early sixteenth and early nineteenth centuries. More comprehensive, inclusive, and far-reaching than earlier studies, this volume represents a major turning point, summing up earlier work and laying a broad foundation for future scholarship across disciplinary lines. Book Synopsis Facsimile of Foxe's Book of Martyrs 1583 by : David G. Newcombe
Download or read book Facsimile of Foxe's Book of Martyrs 1583 written by David G. Newcombe and published by . This book was released on 2001-03-31 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foxe's Actes and Monuments of Matters Most Speciall and Memorable is one of the foundation-stones of English protestant national identity. Over twenty-five years, and in more than 2,500,000 words, Foxe compiled his history of the church in order to demonstrate that protestantism was the true faith. His message shaped English religious and political consciousness for centuries to come with enormous consequences, and the book was second only to the vernacular Bible as a formative influence on English language and culture. The 1583 edition was the last for which Foxe was personally responsible. Assembled from two separate originals, this facsimile on CD-ROM provides the only complete version available. The CD-ROM combines readable and printable images of the 2,200 pages of text and woodcut engravings from the complete edition. The illustrations are displayed as very high resolution facsimiles (400 dots per inch) and there is a searchable transcription of Foxe's own index and calendar which catalogues and links to the text and woodcuts. The CD-ROM comes complete with installation instructions and full on-screen help.
