Mr. Stapleton thinks that our author was correct in writing it Harecherius, and considers that word synonymous with Archan'us, which frequently appears in the Rolls of the Exchequer. We find therca Richard Afobarias, or Archer, and a Richard de Domfront, whom he considers the same person. This inhabitant of Domfront received from the gratitude of Henry 1. Seven manors in Berkshire. This grant is made to him under the name of Robert the Archer, and Henry calls him mayislar meus. Wace, who calls him Haschier, adds that it was to Paris he went to give the invitation to the young prince. He was descended from another Achard, who appears as witness to the charter of foundation of Lonlai in 1026, with this description: Achardus dives, miles de Donnifronte. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Normandy and of England, Vol. 3 My Dear Sir, You have honoured me with your kind permission that I should explain, in a few words addressed to yourself, the circumstances in which the Third and Fourth Volumes of this History are now published. The Fourth Volume was printed throughout (with exception of the "Summary") several years since. Some corrections in it were afterwards planned by my father; but it represents, on the whole, his maturest judgment on the events narrated. The completion of the Third Volume (postponed for personal reasons to the composition of the Fourth), had formed the author's occupation during the leisure hours of the last four years of his life. Great part had been written previously; and it was his wish to revise the whole, incorporating in it the fruits of additional study and of visits to the scenes of the principal events described. Death, however, in July 1861, stayed his hand when this revision had been completed only to the end of Chapter III. From this point onwards (Chapters IV to XV), the book has been edited by me. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Romance of History England, Vol. 1 of 3 The following Tales are all founded upon facts in English history. The aid of fiction has, indeed, been made use of, but no important historical event has been falsified; and where the Author has wandered farthest from strict fact, he has yet endeavoured to be true to the spirit and manners of the age in which the scene is laid. It will also be found, that the most marvellous and improbable of the events narrated in these volumes, are by no means the least authentic. "Le vrai," says a French author, "n'est pas toujours le vraisemblable." A few of the Tales refer rather to the history of foreign nations than of England, as "The Rings" does to that of France, and "The Starry Tower" to that of Spain; all, however, have some degree of reference to English history, and if in one or two instances the reader should find this link of conexion a somewhat slight one, it is hoped that the historiette will not, on that account, be condemned, if in other respects it should merit approbation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Norman Conquest of England, Vol. 3: Its Causes and Its Results Besides my great obligations to Sir Henry James and Captain James, I am no less indebted to His Grace the Duke of Cleveland for the free and re pasted access which he has allowed me to all parts of the battle-field, a large part of which lies within his private grounds at Battle Abbey. Without this kindness on his Grace's part no satisfactory account of the battle could have been written. I owe deep thanks also to my two companions at Stamford bridge, Archdeacon Jones and Mr. J. R. Green, of whom Mr. Green also accompanied me on one of my visits to Senlac, as well as to many of the places described in Normandy and Maine. I have also to thank Mr. Dawkins for much valuable advice with regard to the map of the Campaign of Hastings, and M. Le goat-clarissa of Caen for his kind and valuable guidance to the field of Varaville. Neither must I forget the good-humoured readiness which Mr. H. O. Coxe has so often shown in verifying references in the Bodleian Library, and the benefit of unrestrained resort on all questions to Professor Stubbs may be taken for granted at every stage of every undertaking of mine. And there are others whose names cannot well appear in print to whom. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
