Founded in 1767 and continuing to this day it has endured under four flags, the British, the State of Virginia, the Confederacy and the United States. While the shipyard has been, and continues to be, at the tip of the spear for the defense of our nation, the real story is about its' people, be that the sailor who spent a few days in the yard getting their ship repaired, the military who have served there, or the many generations of Tidewater families who have worked there.

Founded in 1767 as the Gosport Shipyard, it has been burned and rebuilt three times, once to prevent it from getting into the hands of the newly independent state of Virginia and twice during the early years of the Civil War. It has been in continuous operation since it was rebuilt after the American Civil War. Specializing in repairing, overhauling, and modernizing ships and submarines, it is the largest industrial facility owned and operated by the US Navy. Historic photographs from the archives of the Navy History and Heritage Command, the Hampton Roads Naval Museum, the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard Museum, and the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Public Affairs Office tell the story of one of the largest shipyards on earth and exemplify what American hands are capable of creating. These images serve as a reminder of the past for those who were stationed or worked at the shipyard, preserving history for future generations.

Book excerpt: Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY), established in 1767, is the oldest of the United States Navy's shipyards and predates the Department of the Navy by 31 years. It is located on the western shore of the Elizabeth River's southern branch in Portsmouth, Virginia. Andrew Sprowle, under the British flag, established it as Gosport Shipyard and it flourished as a naval and merchant shipyard. He vacated the 16 acre site at the onset of the American Revolution in 1775 and Gosport was seized by the colony of Virginia (NNSY 1999). The shipyard was burned by opposing forces three times, first by the British during the Revolution and once by both Union and Confederate forces during the Civil War. "The Navy assumed title to Gosport Shipyard on 15 June 1801" (Goodwin & Associates 1998, p. 18) after the Federal Government recognized the value of operating its own yards. "This former colonial shipyard became the Navy's nucleus in the Hampton Roads area where the largest naval base Norfolk Naval Basel in the world has developed" (NNSY 1999). Throughout its storied history, which includes operating during nine major wars, NNSY has facilitated invaluable service to the nation. Among notable accomplishments at the yard, the first dry dock in the Western Hemisphere, Dry Dock No. 1, began operating in 1833 and continues to operate today. Over one hundred United States and allied ships were built or converted at NNSY. USS Merrimack was converted in Dry Dock 1 into the Confederate Navy's ironclad CSS Virginia, which fought the Union's USS Monitor in Hampton Roads Bay during the Civil War.

This shore establishment, located on the historic harbor of Hampton Roads, has remained vital to the Navy since its foundation in 1917. Once established, the naval station focused on serving the fleet in four areas: aviation, recruit training, a submarine base, and a supply base. Men and women of the station continued to work on these and other activities through the pressures of World War I, the Depression, World War II, and wars in Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. They made sure that ships and aircraft were successfully deployed to the far reaches of the globe the nation s indispensable response to international conflicts. Nowadays, the station is the hub for Navy logistics supporting the defense of the entire Atlantic area, from the North Pole to the South Pole."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A detailed history of one week during the Civil War in which the American president assumed control of the nation’s military. One rainy evening in May, 1862, President Abraham Lincoln boarded the revenue cutter Miami and sailed to Fort Monroe in Hampton Roads, Virginia. There, for the first and only time in our country’s history, a sitting president assumed direct control of armed forces to launch a military campaign. In Lincoln Takes Command, author Steve Norderdetails this exciting, little-known week in Civil War history. Lincoln recognized the strategic possibilities offered by Maj. Gen. George B. McClellan’s ongoing Peninsula Campaign and the importance of seizing Norfolk, Portsmouth, and the Gosport Navy Yard. For five days, the president spent time on sea and land, studied maps, spoke with military leaders, suggested actions, and issued direct orders to subordinate commanders. He helped set in motion many events, including the naval bombardment of a Confederate fort, the sailing of Union ships up the James River toward the enemy capital, an amphibious landing of Union soldiers followed by an overland march that expedited the capture of Norfolk, Portsmouth, and the navy yard, and the destruction of the Rebel ironclad CSS Virginia. The president returned to Washington in triumph, with some urging him to assume direct command of the nation’s field armies. The week discussed in Lincoln Takes Command has never been as heavily researched or told in such fine detail. The successes that crowned Lincoln’s short time in Hampton Roads offered him a better understanding of, and more confidence in, his ability to see what needed to be accomplished. This insight helped sustain him through the rest of the war.
