Book Synopsis The Continuities of German History by : Helmut Walser Smith
Download or read book The Continuities of German History written by Helmut Walser Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-04-07 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book opens the debate about German history in the long term – about how ideas and political forms are traceable across what historians have taken to be the sharp breaks of German history. Smith argues that current historiography has become ever more focused on the twentieth century, and on twentieth-century explanations for the catastrophes at the center of German history. Against conventional wisdom, he considers continuities - nation and nationalism, religion and religious exclusion, racism and violence - that are the center of the German historical experience and that have long histories. Smith explores these deep continuities in novel ways, emphasizing their importance, while arguing that Germany was not on a special path to destruction. The result is a series of innovative reflections on the crystallization of nationalist ideology, on patterns of anti-Semitism, and on how the nineteenth-century vocabulary of race structured the twentieth-century genocidal imagination.

Download or read book Nazism written by Neil Gregor and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2000-10-26 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nazi regime was a regime of unparalleled destructiveness. Nazism presents both key texts from some of the most innovative and challenging of more recent studies and extracts from the older historiography of the origins, nature, impact, and legacy of the National Socialist regime. It suggests both the need to re-read and re-consider much forgotten or ignored texts from earlier generations of commentators and the possibility of considering afresh the structure, style of rule, and consequences of National Socialism in the context provided by the end of the cold war. The texts connect the experiences of the Jewish and non-Jewish victims of Nazi aggression and genocide; links the fates of the victims with analysis of the perpetrators; and stresses the consequences of this unprecedented collapse in civilised values for post war Germany and the world.
Book Synopsis Origin Of The Second World War by : A.J.P. Taylor
Download or read book Origin Of The Second World War written by A.J.P. Taylor and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 1996-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Back Cover: From the moment of its publication in 1961, A.J.P. Taylor's seminal work caused a storm of praise and controversy, and it has since been recognized as a classic: the first book ever to examine exclusively and in depth the causes of the Second World War and to apportion the responsibility among Allies and Germans alike. With crisp, clear prose and brilliant analysis, Taylor established that the war, "far from being premeditated, was a mistake, the result on both sides of diplomatic blunders." He argued that Hitler was more an opportunist than an ideologue who owed his successes to Great Britain's and France's tacking between resistance and appeasement, and to an American policy akin to "the significant episode of the dog in the night, to which Sherlock Holmes once drew attention. When Watson objected: 'But the dog did nothing in the night," Holmes answered: 'That was the significant episode.' "The Times Literary Supplement called The Origins of the Second World War "simple, devastating, superlatively readable, and deeply disturbing," and it remains so now-a groundbreaking book of enduring importance.
