Book excerpt: Purchased for six coats, twelve iron axes, ten blankets, twelve hatchets, twelve hoes, two dozen knives, six mirrors and a kettle, the town of Milford has blossomed into one of Connecticut's most treasured places. Local journalist and historian Frank Juliano takes us through the incredible stories of his town, including a series of vignettes about famous Milford residents such as Simon Lake, whose technology led to the development of the modern submarine. From the American Revolution, when seventy-three men from Milford marched to Boston to fight in the famous Battle of Lexington and Concord, to the backyard pit of a local farmhouse that was surely a stop on the Underground Railroad, Milford has its roots firmly grounded in the bedrock of American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Island has captured the imaginations of Milford residents and visitors for many years. The island's rich history gradually blurs as memories fade with time and eventually only the highlights are passed down from one generation to the next. An Historical Account of Charles Island seeks to accurately restore the island's history from its European discovery by Adriaen Block in 1614 to the 20th century. Included are the historical facts surrounding the mapping of Long Island Sound, legend of Captain Kidd's treasure, summer resorts in the mid-19th century, a prize fight gone out-of-control, the Aquinas Retreat, nearby shipwrecks, the island's place in naval and aviation history, a proposed nudist colony, and other forgotten stories. Seventy maps, woodcuts, old advertisements, manuscripts, portraits, and photographs provide a visual perspective of the island's history.

Book Synopsis Milford by : Greater Milford Area Historical Society
Download or read book Milford written by Greater Milford Area Historical Society and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Historic Milford is situated along the Little Miami River, one of the primary reasons settlers in this area flourished. Rich farmlands and excellent waterpower with mill potential offered the pioneers a good life in the frontier. Milford was the site of the first Methodist class in the Northwest Territory beginning in 1797. Other denominations quickly followed, and Milford today remains a community with strong church ties. As farms and mills flourished, other businesses began to appear. Introduction of the railroads allowed more products to come in and out of Milford to nearby Cincinnati and beyond. A school, new businesses, and fine homes were built in the busy little city by the river. Residents enjoyed opera and orchestra performances in the ornate city hall building, as well as boxing and other sporting events. Still today, Milford reflects these early values and offers a community based on a rich heritage.
