Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Marshall County, Iowa: Containing a History of the County, Its Cities, Towns, &C Herein lies the most unpleasant feature of the work performed: an impar tial observance of the rules prescribed by us plays havoc with individual claims in more than one instance. It is just to ourselves that we say We have been actuated by no motives but the highest in the discharge of our duty. If state ments made within these pages conflict with personal assertion, let it be remem bered by the critic that majority judgment has, in every case, prevailed with us on all disputed points. We do not expect to please every subscriber that would indicate a millennial condition of unity between the writer and the pub lic which has never been attained, even in sacred history. We have tried to give a truthful record of events, as the facts have been made known to us. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis Marshall County by : Connie M. Huddleston
Download or read book Marshall County written by Connie M. Huddleston and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2006 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 19th century, settlers established ferries across the Tennessee River in Kentucky and grew crops, including corn and tobacco. Small communities formed around schools and crossroads. Cheap land prices and lust for westward expansion fueled population growth. In 1842, Marshall County was created and named for Chief Justice John Marshall. Over the next 100 years, some roadside communities grew into small, prosperous towns. James Love founded Birmingham, a port on the Tennessee River, which became the county's largest community. Downriver Gilbertsville profited from river traffic and rail transportation, while Hardin and Calvert City developed strictly around rail stops. Benton slowly matured as the county seat. Still the county was mostly rural farming communities until the devastating flood of 1937 brought the Tennessee Valley Authority to Gilbertsville to build Kentucky Dam.

Book excerpt: The Oregon-California Trail carried more than 100,000 settlers west over the prairies of the future state of Kansas in the mid-1800s. Pioneers and Pony Express riders crossed the Big Blue River at Independence Crossing or at Frank Marshall's ferry near present-day Marysville. In 1846, members of the Donner Party discovered and named Alcove Spring, now one of 20 county sites listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The Kansas Territorial Legislature established Marshall County in 1855. After the Civil War, rich soil and abundant water attracted farmers, and its location attracted railroads and industry. Today, the same occupations still sustain the 16 towns and villages. As the "Gateway to the Flint Hills," the county's rolling hills are dotted with picturesque prairie, woods, limestone outcrops, rivers, and creeks. Even though the county is a crossroads for modern highways US 36 and US 77, pioneer wagon ruts are still visible in Marshall County.
