Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Harvard University, Vol. 1 This History had its origin in the following circumstances. In March, 1836, the Author accepted an invitation from the Corporation of Harvard University, to prepare, as President of the institution, a discourse, to be delivered on the second centennial anniversary of its foundation, in commemoration of that event, and of the founders and patrons of the semina ry. From the researches, into which he was led by this undertaking, it became apparent that these topics could not be satisfactorily in vestigated before the day fixed Upon for the celebration. The Author, therefore, decided to prepare such a general sketch of events and characters as might be'comprised Within the limits of an occasional address, and to an nounce his intention of attempting to do jus tice to the subject in a work of a more en larged form and permanent character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Book, Vol. 1: A Series of Historical, Biographical, and Descriptive Sketches IN the middle of the academic year 1873 - 74, when the subject of class photographs was being discussed by that class which was to graduate 'at the following Commencement, this work was begun. It originated by considering the possibility of securing, in some more durable and attractive manner than hitherto, those pictures of the familiar scenes and faces of College days which every student at the end of his four-years' life at Harvard desires to carry away with him. It was thought this object might be best attained if there were added to the usual pictures composing a class album descriptive sketches of the College grounds, buildings, and those institutions which enter so largely into the social life of the undergraduate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Harvard University: From Its Foundation, in the Year 1636, to the Period of the American Revolution A particular history of Harvard University, the most ancient Seminary of Learning in this country, has long been a desideratum in our literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Harvard Law School and of Early Legal Conditions in America, Vol. 1 Justinian, in his directions to the compilers of his Pandects, wrote: Begin, then, to instruct, with the guidance of God, your scholars in the science of the Law to the end that they may be made worthy ministers of justice and of the Republic. Such instruction and such end have been the aim of Harvard Law School since its foundation. If less than this were true, there would be no occasion for this book. In the preface to the first volume of his Reports, Coke said: It is therefore necessary that memorable things should be committed to writing (the witness of times, the light and life of truth) and not wholly be taken to slippery memory, which seldom yieldeth a certain reckoning. Memorable things and memorable men have impinged upon the past of the Harvard Law School, and it has been my task to fix in writing some impressions, hitherto unpublished, of that past from men who formed a part of it, and to gather together from the disjointed writings of others their records of that past. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Harvard Medical School, Vol. 1: A History, Narrative and Documentary Our author has had untrammelled access to authorities and documents, and he tells in elaborate detail the history of the Harvard School. After giving us an account of the medical conditions in New England during colonial times, he recounts what service Harvard men furnished to the medical depart ment of the Revolutionary Army, and then plunges into the story of the School's founding and feeble growth through the latter part of the 18th century, when the teaching was in Cambridge and hospitals did not exist. Numerous biograph ical sketches of ancient Harvard Medical worthies follow, and the period ends with the year 1810. Then the School was transferred to Boston and waxed strong. Hospitals were built, teachers multiplied, new learn ing was imported, famous names appeared on our rolls, and. Just as an educational expansion was becoming imminent, the era ended in the crash of the great Civil War. So much is told in Volume II. With Volume III we learn of a revolution in medical edu cation. President Eliot takes the reins. The old order changes. The old School had been a truly private enterprise under the shelter of the University. The new school becomes an integral part of the University. We read the inspiring story of the new learning and of University development throughout the land, - a story which must appeal to every thoughtful man. So we follow the history of the Harvard School down to the present, and learn of the great new founds tion which tomorrow we shall enjoy. The history of a professional school cannot furnish many dramatic incidents. It flows on gently from year to year, punctuated here and there with names, discoveries, upbuild ings; with struggles, vicissitudes, contests. To be complete, a history of this kind must be largely statistical and docu mentary; such are the volumes before us; but through them. There runs a stream of narrative which Harvard men will fol low with interest and satisfaction. Especially valuable are the sketches of Eminent Alumni. When you read the stories of Nathan Smith, Howe, the War rens, Dalton, Flint, the Bigelows, Holmes, Parker and many others, you appreciate the wide influence of the Harvard School; and if you are blessed with imagination you thrill with pride. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Harvard Great men whose memory is today as green and wholesome as half a century ago, have transmitted to posterity the historic achievements of Harvard. They are achievements which have been accomplished by seriousness, achievements reflecting the staid light of our beloved Alma Mater. But, like in the great, busy world beyond our own College gates, there is a funny vein in life, if we but look for it. The "Office" is a mighty serious place for some of us, yet we never tire in attempts to think it a most grotesque retreat. And so it is with Harvard, and so it has been. In the short sketch of the College in these pages the endeavor has been to show that Harvard is not so serious an institution as some may have tried to make you believe. Of Lon don redoubled his generous efforts to assist the College in its distress; other public-spirited and enlightened individuals came forward with their contributions upon the occasion so that a very few years supplied the loss of what had been the accumulation of more than a century. The Library increased so rapidly, that, in 1790, when the last Cata logue was printed, it consisted of about twelve thousand volumes, - an amount, which, considering the situation of the country during a great part of the time it was collecting, and notwithstanding the donations from abroad, reflects no small credit on the character and spirit even of those days of patriotism and of public virtue. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1894, Vol. 1: Secretary's Report The class secretary submits herewith the first Class Report, containing the usual statistics of the class, various records of the college course and information as-to the present whereabouts of temporary members and special students, together with a list of post-othee addresses. The first Class Report is supposed to be published before the first Commencement after graduation. For the delay in the publication of this report, the secretary offers his apologies and the apologies of those members of the class who have so long neglected to send in their class lives. There are still five of the three hundred and seventy men who received the degree of A. B. In June I894, and a much larger number of temporary members and special students, who have not been heard from. After sending repeated notices and even personal letters to these persons, the secretary has decided not to waste the class postage on them anv longer. Their names are marked in the list of addresses with a dagger (t); anybody who can persuade any of them to send in their lives will confer a favor on the secretary and on the class. Until the delinquents show enough interest in the class to comply with so moderate a request. The secretary must assume that they do not care to receive the documents or communications relating to the class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Classics, Vol. 1 Hereby, too, I shall indulge the inclination so natural in old men, to be talking of themselves and their own past actions; and I shall indulge it without being tiresome to others, who, through respect to age, might conceive themselves obliged to give me a hearing, since this may be read or not as any one pleases. And, lastly (i may as well confess it, since my denial of it will be believed by nobody), perhaps I shall a good deal gratify my own vanity. Indeed, I scarce ever heard or saw the introductory words, Without vanity I may say, &c., but some vain thing immediately followed. Most people dislike vanity in others, whatever share they have of it themselves; but I give it fair quarter wherever I meet with it, being persuaded that it is often productive of good to the possessor, and to others that are within his sphere of action; and therefore, in many cases, it would not be altogether absurd if a man were to thank God for his vanity among the other comforts of life. And now I speak of thanking God, I desire with all humility to acknowledge that I owe the mentioned happiness of my past life to His kind providence, which lead me to the means I used and gave them success. My belief of this induces me to hope, though I must not presume, that the same goodness will still be exercised toward me, in continuing that happiness, or enabling me to bear a fatal reverse, which I may experience as others have done: the com plexion of my future fortune being known to Him only in whose power it is to bless to us even our afflictions. The notes one of my uncles (who had the same kind of curiosity in collecting family anecdotes) once put into my hands, furnished me with several particulars relating to our ancestors. From these notes I learned that the family had lived in the same village, Ecton, in Northamptonshire, for three hundred years, and how much longer he knew not (perhaps from the time when the name of Franklin, that before was the name of an order of people, was assumed by them as a surname when others took surnames all over the kingdom), on a freehold of about thirty acres, aided by the smith's business, which had continued in the family till his time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard Memorial Biographies, Vol. 1 Those of us whose fortunate lot it was to enlist in the army, during that magic epoch of adventure which has just passed by, will never again find in life a day of such strange excitement as that when they first put on uniform and went into camp. It was a day absolutely broken off from all that had gone before it. To say that it brought a sense of utter novelty, is nothing; the transformation seemed as perfect as if, by some suddenly revealed process, one had learned to swim in air, and were striking out for some new planet. The past was annihilated, the future was all. Now that dimly-visioned future has itself become a portion of the past; that new cycle of existence is ended; already its memories grow dim; and, after all that seeming metamorphosis, the survivors still find themselves with their feet upon the familiar earth, and pursue once more the quiet paths they left. The aureole is vanished from their lives, but it still lingers round the heads of the fallen. No time, no change, can restore them to the old ways, or take them from the enchanted sphere in which they hence forth dwell. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1895, Vol. 1: Secretary's Report It is usual to make the announcement in the preface of the first report, that the Class Cradle will be given to the first child born to a graduate of the class married after graduation. Applications for this distinction should be sent to the secretary at once. Notices of meetings of the class on Commencement Day will appear in the Boston papers and in the New York Times. As this report deals with the life of the members of the class duung the four years of the college course, so later reports will deal with their subsequent careers. The score tary therefore welcomes communications from all members of the class, also any newspaper cuttings relating to '95 men and especially notices of marriages, births and deaths. Notice of any changes of address should be given at once. The secretary will gladly answer, so far as he can, any requests for information about '95 men.
