Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 10 Sparta and Persia were both great gainers, no other Grecian state gained anything, as the convention was originally framed. But after the first rejection, Antalkidas saw the necessity of conciliating Athens by the addition of, a special article pro viding that Lemnos, Imbros, and Skyros should be restored to her.1 This addition seems to have been first made in the abortive negotiations which form the subject of the discourse already mentioned, pronounced by Andokides. It was con tinued afterwards and inserted in the final decree which Antalkidas and Tiribazus brought down in the King's name from Susa; and it doubtless somewhat contributed to facili tate the adherence of Athens, though the united forces of Sparta and Persia had become so overwhelming, that she could hardly have had the means of standing out, even if the supplementary article had been omitted. Nevertheless, this condition undoubtedly did secure to Athens a certain share in the gain, conjointly with the far larger shares both of Sparta and Persia. It is however not less true, that Athens, aswell as Thebes,2 assented to the peace only under fear and compul sion. As to the other states of Greece, they were interested merely in the melancholy capacity of partners in the general loss and degradation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greece, Vol. 7 of 8 After the conquest of the Bactrian satrapy, there remained only one province of the Persian empire into' which Alexander had not yet carried his arms: it was that which tempted his curiosity, as well as his ambiw tion, perhaps more than any other. Already, indeed, before he crossed the Paropamisus, he had made himself master of a great part of the country which the Per s1ans called India, and perhaps had very nearly reached the utmost limits within which the authority of the Great King was acknowledged in the latter years of the monarchy. But the power of the first Darius had cer tainly been extended much further eastward. It seems probable that a part of his Indian tribute was collected in the Pendj ab, and there is some reason to believe that it was on the Hydaspes Scylax began his voyage of discovery.1 After the death of Darius, the attention of the Persian kings was so much turned toward the west, or distracted by wars with their revolted subjects. Book excerpt: Widely acknowledged as the most authoritative study of ancient Greece, George Grote's twelve-volume work, begun in 1846, established the shape of Greek history which still prevails in textbooks and popular accounts of the ancient world today. Grote employs direct and clear language to take the reader from the earliest times of legendary Greece to the death of Alexander and his generation, drawing upon epic poetry and legend, and examining the growth and decline of the Athenian democracy. The work provides explanations of Greek political constitutions and philosophy, and interwoven throughout are the important but outlying adventures of the Sicilian and Italian Greeks. Volume 8 takes the story from the overthrow of the Four Hundred in Athens to the death of Alkibiades in 404 BCE, and also contains chapters on drama and rhetoric, and on the philosophy of the Sophists and of Socrates.
