Book excerpt: History is everywhere in Freckleton - it can be seen in the very physical and social fabric of this village near Preston, Lancashire. The shape of the fields, the street plan, the houses and buildings are all evidence in one way or another of hundreds of years of human endeavour, character and tragedy. The village is known for many things: its grazing marshes, its boat-yard and the bleak beauty of the Naze; but above all for its very strong sense of community, witnessed by the range and number of church and social organizations flourishing in the area.

Download or read book The Freckleton, England, Air Disaster written by James R. Hedtke and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Freckleton catastrophe of August 23, 1944, occurred when an American B-24 Liberator crashed into the small village of Freckleton in northwest England. The plane was on a test flight when it encountered a rare and severe summer thunderstorm. Air traffic control at the American air base Warton recalled the bomber back to the base. When the pilot attempted to abort the landing because of poor visibility and high winds, a downdraft caught the plane and it crashed into the adjacent village of Freckleton. As the B-24 tumbled through the village, destroying three houses and a snack bar, flames erupted from wreckage and engulfed Holy Trinity grade school. Before the fire could be brought under control, the holocaust destroyed an entire generation of children in this village of fewer than 1,000 inhabitants. The village would never be the same. In a compelling account of sorrow, loss, hope and finally rebirth, the book looks at the history of the village, the establishment of the base at Warton, the crash, the funeral of the 61 victims, the official British inquest and the American investigation into the cause of the crash. The lives of the survivors, the servicemen and the villagers are followed through 2012.

Book Synopsis The Future of Diplomacy After COVID-19 by : Hana Alhashimi
Download or read book The Future of Diplomacy After COVID-19 written by Hana Alhashimi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-11 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on international diplomacy, and the challenges and opportunities it presents for the future of multilateralism. Global cooperation and solidarity are central to responding to and mitigating the health and socio-economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, yet, to many, this was slow to mobilize and lacking in political leadership. This book takes a practical look at the lessons learned from the period spanning the World Health Organization’s first declaration of a public health emergency of international concern in January 2020, to the commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations in October 2020. This timespan covers a critical period in which to consider key areas of diplomacy, covering a range of tools of global cooperation: multilateral diplomacy, the rule of law, sustainable development, economics and financing, digital governance, and peace and security. Each chapter in this book introduces readers to the current situation in their respective areas, followed by a constructive consideration of lessons learned from the pandemic’s impact on that field, and key recommendations for the future. The practical focus and future orientation is particularly important as the book injects pragmatism and guidance that will facilitate ‘building back better’ in COVID response plans, while creating space for continued focus on global commitments around sustainable development and the future of the UN. Written by a team of authors who have worked directly in International Public Policy and the establishment of global agendas at the United Nations, this book will be essential reading for professionals and policymakers involved in diplomatic roles, as well as students and scholars interested in the future of international relations, global governance and sustainable development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 'Sundowners' have flown some of the most iconic naval fighters ever built, namely the Wildcat, Hellcat, Panther, Crusader, Phantom II and the Tomcat. Fighting Squadron 11 was established at San Diego in August 1943, beginning a half-century record that spanned aerial combat in three wars from the piston to the jet age. The squadron produced seven aces while fighting in World War 2, Korea and Vietnam. From Barrett Tillman, the world's most prolific US naval aviation author with over two-dozen titles on the World War 2 period alone, this detailed history shows how the 'Sundowners' established an unexcelled record 'at the tip of the spear' in naval aviation history, from World War 2 until after the Cold War.

Book Synopsis The Human Web by : John Robert McNeill
Download or read book The Human Web written by John Robert McNeill and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2003 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did the first civilizations emerge when and where they did? How did Islam become a unifying force in the world of its birth? What enabled the West to project its goods and power around the world from the fifteenth century on? Why was agriculture invented seven times and the steam engine just once?World-historical questions such as these, the subjects of major works by Jared Diamond, David Landes, and others, are now of great moment as global frictions increase. In a spirited and original contribution to this quickening discussion, two renowned historians, father and son, explore the webs that have drawn humans together in patterns of interaction and exchange, cooperation and competition, since earliest times. Whether small or large, loose or dense, these webs have provided the medium for the movement of ideas, goods, power, and money within and across cultures, societies, and nations. From the thin, localized webs that characterized agricultural communities twelve thousand years ago, through the denser, more interactive metropolitan webs that surrounded ancient Sumer, Athens, and Timbuktu, to the electrified global web that today envelops virtually the entire world in a maelstrom of cooperation and competition, J. R. McNeill and William H. McNeill show human webs to be a key component of world history and a revealing framework of analysis. Avoiding any determinism, environmental or cultural, the McNeills give us a synthesizing picture of the big patterns of world history in a rich, open-ended, concise account.

Book excerpt: This is a compilation of references to Family History and temple work from the Bible, Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants, Pearl of Great Price, and Modern Church Leaders. Also there is a chapter on faith promoting stories from family history experiences and a chapter on family stories and descendant charts of the Grigg family. There is information on how modern research techniques using computers, digitizing of records and the internet facilitates the researching and finding of your ancestors. The last chapter is an update and republishing of the the book titled Parley M. Grigg, Jr. and Thankful Halsey Gardner's Descendants and History published in 1992. This correlated publication shows that in all ages of the world since the creation of Adam, God has desired His Holy Ordinances to be done in a House built to His name, namely a Temple of God. This compilation is also designed to show that Jesus' plan of redemption for all mankind includes vicarious ordinance work for the dead to be done in God's Holy Temples by those living in the Dispensation of the Fullness of Times. This was all in God's plan for the redemption of all mankind before the foundation of this world.
