Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Florence Iccolo machiavelli received in the year 1520, from Giulio de' Medici, the commission to write his [storie Fiorentine. His Dedication of the completed work to Pope Clement VII. Was written in I 527, the year of Machiavelli's death. This book has a place of honour in the history Of Modern Literature, as the first work in which the Annal-writing of {he Chronicler gave place to the more artistic shaping of a. History that found in political societies of man the operation of first principles of life under varying social conditions. With simple grouping of details into coherent chapters, Machiavelli first shows how the shaping of Italian states, the making of modern Italy, produced conditions that affected from within and from without the public life of Florence. Then he begins in his second book the History of Florence herself, which he brings down to his own time, and closes with the death of Lorenzo de' Medici; natural end of an epoch in the History of Florence. Machiavelli's own age at that time was twenty-three. The English version here given of Machiavelli's History is reprinted from the first complete translation of The Works of the Famous Nicolas Machiavel, Citizen and Secretary of Florence. Written originally in Italian, and from thence newly and faith fully translated into English. London, folio, 1675. Twenty years later there was a second edition of this folio, and there was a third edition in 1720. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Florence: And of the Affairs of Italy; From the Earliest Times to the Death of Lorenzo the Magnificent Together With the Prince and Various Historical Tracts Niccolo Machiavelli, the first great Italian historian, and one of the most eminent political writers of any age or country, was born at Florence, May 3, 1469. He was of an old though not wealthy Tuscan family, his father, who was a jurist, dying when Niccolo was sixteen years old. We know nothing of Machiavelli is youth and little about his studies. He does not seem to have received the usual humanistic education of his time, as he knew no Greek. The first notice of Machiavelli is in 1498 when we find him holding the office of Secretary in the second Chancery of the Signoria, which office he retained till the downfall of the Florentine Republic in 1512. His unusual ability was soon recognized, and in 1500 he was sent on a mission to Louis XII. of France, and afterward on an embassy to Caesar Borgia, the lord of Romagna, at Urbino. Machiavelli's report and description of this and subsequent embassies to this prince, shows his undisguised admiration for the courage and cunning of Caesar, who was a master in the application of the principles afterward exposed in such a skillful and uncompromising manner by Machiavelli in his "Prince." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florentine History N icolo machiavelli, who was born in 1469 and died in I 527, received a commission in 1520, at the instance of Cardinal Giulio de' Medici, to write the history of Florence. By the year I 52 5 the Istorie Fiorentine was completed, so far as we have it, and presented to the Cardinal, who in the meantime had become Pope under the title Of Clement VII. Whatever benefits the choice or acceptance of a Medici as a patron may have brought Machiavelli in his lifetime it secured a publisher for his writings, because in 1531 Clement granted to Antonio Blado the privilege of printing the Istorie Fiorentine, II Principe, Discorsi, and a few other works. But by this time death, to which Machiavelli had Often referred as the enemy to the accomplishment of so many great objects, had stepped in and the golden pen was laid aside for ever. Thus the promise which the author had made to his patron of continuing the history of Florence was never fulfilled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Florence The present volume is intended to supply a popular history of the Florentine Republic, in such a form that it can also be used as a guide-book. It has been my endeavour, while keeping within the necessary limits of this series of Me val Towns to point out briefly the most salient features in the story of Florence, to tell again the tale of those of her streets and buildings, and indicate those of her artistic treasures, which are either most intimately connected with that story or most beautiful in themselves. Those who know best what an intensely fascinating and many-sided history that of Florence has been, who hare studied most closely the work and characters of those strange and wonderful personalities who have lived within (and, the case of the greatest, died without) her walls, will best appreciate my difficulty in compressing even a portion of all this wealth and profusion into the narrow bounds enjoined by the aim and scope of this book. Much has necessarily been curtailed over which it would have been tempting to linger, much inevitably omitted which the historian could not have passed over, nor the compiler of a guide-book failed to mention. In what I have selected for treatment and what omitted, I have usually let myself be guided by the remembrance of my own needs when I first commenced to visit Florence and to study her arts and history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florence Its History, the Medici, the Humanists, Letters, Arts Italy in the thirteenth century carried on and brought to its crowning point the work of civilization which France in the twelfth century had started by means of the crusades, the establishment of communal franchises, and the foundation of the University Of Paris. The symbol created by the genius Of Lucre tius, where the successive labor Of generations is rep resented by running-men passing their torches from hand to hand, had never been realized with so much grandeur; the sacred torches had fallen from French hands, and had been picked up by Italy, in whose grasp they emitted a light which dazzled the whole world. Rome, notwithstanding the Barbarian invasion, the schism, and the exile Of the Papacy, still retained the recollection Of her glorious past, brought even more vividly before her by the superb monuments which had withstood the ravages Of time and Of man. But even Rome, like the rest of Italy, acknowledged the superiority of Florence comparable to Athens itself, and all the cities Of Italy did homage to her genius. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Builders of Florence It has been said already that this book has no pretension to completeness, and a glance at the table of contents will show that from among the many important and monumental buildings of Florence few indeed - only twelve - have been Chosen for treatment here. Be it so, the critic will say, but if few, yet why these few? Why go afield to Settimo and neglect the Badia of Florence? Why speak of Santa Maria Novella and find no word for Santa Croce? The reader, who sees his favourite Church or palace thus passed by, is asked to believe at least that an underlying reason and no mere caprice has dictated the Choice of which he com plains. History and architecture, let him remember, are the twin determinants here, and that not separately but together, inwoven in this book as they surely are in fact and in life. But so, it will be understood how Choice has been at once limited and directed, fixed on certain buildings as possessing both architectural and historic interest, and such as lend themselves readily as illustra tions of the City's life, whether commercial, ideal, or political. And, even in Florence, such buildings are not innumerable. His purpose thus cleared and defined, with some of the con sequences to which it has led in the minor yet important matters of selection and arrangement, the author, as he commits his work to the press, takes this welcome occasion to thank all those private and public persons and authorities whose kind help has assisted and encouraged its appearance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Florentine History, Vol. 1 of 2 When first I resolved to write the History of the affairs, foreign and domestic, of the Florentine people, my intention was to begin my narrative from the year of our Lord 1434, at which date the House of Medici, through the merits of Cosimo and of his father Giovanni, obtained greater authority in Florence than any other family in that city. For I thought to myself that Messer Lionardo of Arezzo and Messer Poggio, both of them admirable historians, must have recorded at length all that had taken place before that time. But afterwards, having diligently studied their writings with a View to learn what order and methods they had followed, and by imitating these make my own History more attractive to the reader, I found that while they had been most circumstantial in their account of the various wars waged by the Florentines against foreign Princes and Peoples, as regards civil discords and intestine feuds, and the effects following from them, they had either been wholly silent or had treated them so briefly as to afford the reader neither pleasure nor profit. (this course I believe them to have taken, either because they thought such matters too trivial for written record or else through fear of offending the descendants of those persons whom, in writing of them, they would have had occasion to.
