Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Co-Operation "Chi ha un compagno ha un padrone." - Italian Proverb. ("He who has a partner has a master.") Industrial Co-operation includes not merely union for strength, but union for participation in the profits made in concert, but the theory has not always been applied consistently to the workshop. In a store the purchasers share the total profits. In a proper productive society, after the payment of all expenses of wages, of capital, material, rent, education, and reserve fund - the total profits are divisible among the thinkers and workers who have made them, according to the value of their labour estimated by their respective salaries, and to customers according to their purchases. The members of manufacturing societies in some cases prove themselves wanting in patience and generosity towards their comrades. The smarter sort, perceiving that a successful trade may speedily produce large profits, prefer converting the co-operative affair into a joint-stock one, and keeping the gains in their own hands, taking their chance of hiring labour like other employers. Thus, instead of the mastership of two or three, they introduce the system of a hundred masters. They multiply organisations for individuals, and enlarge the field of strikes, and prepare new ground for contests between capital and labour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Co-Operation, Vol. 1 Emerson begins a poem with the words, "God says, I am tired of kings." Lest the reader should say he is tired of prefaces, I make this one very short. Other histories on this subject will be written, but whatever their merits may be, they cannot be written by any one caring more for Co-operation than myself, or who has been concerned in its career from the days of the Rochdale Pioneers, or been personally conversant with the incidents and persons who made the movement. I have known the motives of those who have promoted it, of those who have retarded it, and those who have withstood it, and for seventy years have vindicated it against its adversaries. The story of this movement is that of an eyewitness. The Third Part of this work brings the History down to this date, with brevity, but with sufficient explicitness to enable the reader to understand the growth and trend of this new Order of Labour. Industrial Co-operation - voluntary concert, with equitable participation and control among all concerned in any enterprise - is a definition that would now be accepted by political economists and journalists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Co-Operation, Being an Epitome of Holyoake's "History of Co-Operation" Arranged by the Sociologic Society of America, With an Introduction Those who have done me the honor to make writings of mine on Co-operation the basis of this epitome of the subject, ask me to make a brief Introduction to it, which shall bring the information in my History of the movement in England down to the present time. The authors of this work, (of 'which I write without having seen it, ) have doubtless made a summary or selection of such portions or passages as have relevance to American needs, or as may be intelligible to the people of the United States. Of all that, they are the best judges. All that is te quired of me is, to make as clear as I can in a short paper, the English conception of the Co-operative movement, to-day. Co-operation is organized self-help by honest labor and honest trade; the profits being equitably divided among those who create them, Whether by work of hand or work of brain. That is what we under stand Industrial Co-operation to be. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Co-Operation in Ireland The present volume is the third included in the "International Series" of books published by the Publications Committee of the British Co-operative Union. This series is intended, first, to serve as an introduction to the study of the cooperative movement in its national and international aspects, and, secondly, to interest the general reader in co-operation. Each volume included in the series, therefore, contains an account of the history, organisation, and work of the co-operative movement in one particular country. The co-operative movement in Ireland, of which a description is given in the following pages, deserves to be carefully studied, not only by co-operators, but also by all who are interested in the organisation of rural life and industry. Co-operation has spread in Ireland in a truly remarkable manner, and it cannot be gainsaid that the present prosperity of Irish agriculture is almost entirely due to the success of the many different types of co-operative society described in this book. The authors of this volume, Messrs. Lionel Smith-Gordon, M.A., and Cruise O'Brien, M.A., were the first and second librarians in charge of the Co-operative Reference Library, The Plunkett House, Dublin, and they therefore possess intimate knowledge of every part of the co-operative movement in Ireland. The two chapters dealing with industrial co-operation in Ireland have been contributed by Mr. L. P. Byrne, assistant manager of the Irish Agricultural Wholesale Society. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Co-Operative Industry From time to time the pressure of other work has led to the postponement of the actual completion of this little volume, which had been almost written by January, 1905. In its production I have been placed under obligations to many, but especially to Mr. J. J. Dent, of the Board of Trade, who has not only given me the benefit of his long, intimate, and exceptional knowledge of the Co-operative Movement, but has, with very great kindness, undertaken to bring figures, when necessary, up to date, and to see the volume through the press during my absence from England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Consumers' Co-Operative Movement The reader will find in this book, not a history of the Co-operative Movement in Great Britain, but a descriptive analysis of its present position, with a survey of its relation to other manifestations of Democracy and of its possibilities for the future. We have now been for thirty years investigating and describing democratic institutions, and only in the twenty-ninth year did we publish any volume dealing with national government or the Political State. We started at the opposite end, not only because the other manifestations of Democracy - in Trade Unionism and consumers' Co-operation, and in the various developments of Local Government - had been relatively neglected by writers on Political Science; but also because, to us as Socialists, these other manifestations seemed actually of greater importance than the Political State itself. For we have always held that it is in this spontaneous undergrowth of social tissue, rather than in a further hypertrophy of the national government, that will be found, for the most part the institutions destined increasingly to supersede the Capitalist System. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Consumers Co-Operative Societies The excellent translation of Professor Gide's "Les Societes Cooperatives de consommation" which follows is the result of the labors of the staff of the Co-operative Reference Library, Dublin, Ireland. The present editor, in preparing the book for an American public, has, by permission of the fellow-co-operators in Dublin, eliminated such of the English footnotes as were of interest principally to British readers or has incorporated them in his own. He has also moved up into the text many of Professor Gide's notes added by him at the time of the translation into English. Therefore at present there are only the two kinds of footnotes: those of the original author and those of the American editor. Without the painstaking work of the translators and those who assisted them, this American edition would probably not have been undertaken at this time. Without Professor Gide's help in reading through the proofs and making several valuable suggestions, the book would not have the contemporary value it now possesses. Finally, Dr. Warbasse, in contributing a preface and a chapter on "Co-operation in the United States," has made this book, always indispensible to the student of European Co-operation, an essential to those who are studying the Co-operative Movement in the United States. The present editor is honoured in being able to append a few additional American notes and to prepare this edition for the publisher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Co-Operation in Lincoln, 1861-1911 When the last of the Imperial tr00ps had been with drawn from the city, the Norsemen assailed it. It is not certain at what period they became its masters, but in the year 518 they were known to have been disputing with the Britons for its possession. From the time of the departure of the Romans until it became entirely Norse or Danish, Lincoln suffered much. Its splendid public buildings were demolished, and from the high standard of civilisation to which it had attained as a Roman colony it was swept back into comparative barbarism under its northern masters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Co-Operative Stores: Their History, Organization, and Management They immediately proceeded to work, and that same evening a paper was drawn up, on which twelve men set their names to an agreement to pay twenty pence a week into a common stock. Only a few out of the twelve were able to pay that sum the same evening, but they proudly named this novel associ ation, The Rochdale Society of Equitable Pioneers. Our weavers assumed this name of Pioneers, as significant of their purpose to break, through the tangled thicket of distress and want which encompassed them, a new path for their brethren of the working class, along which their feet might find the way to a better condition of life. They at once issued a programme for the new Society, which read substantially thus. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
