The aim has been to give a brief history of the most important events connected with the set tlement and development of the country through Territorial days more than twenty-seven years - and at the same time not to have the book so voluminous as to be cumbersome to either old people or children; and also to give a brief review of the progress made by the people of Idaho since statehood up to 1909, with a brief view of the outlook for the future. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Custer County, Idaho The location of this point lies in a hole on the top of the most southern of the three small buttes, about one mile south of the Challis cemetery, and one-quarter mile west of the main highway. The date, according to some old Indians, was about 1845. This conflicts with the engraving on one of the guns, C. S. A. These were attacked by Shoshone and Bannock Indians and forced to retire. This led to sanguinary contests for suprem acy. There was also a number of renegade Indians, who hav ing been expelled from their tribes held no tribal relations, whose repeated depredations on the settlements led to their summary punishment in the winter of 1863. In 1877 occurred the trouble with the non-treaty Indians of the Nez Perce tribe under Chief Joseph, which ended with their capture and re moval to Indian Territory. In 1878 and 1879 the Bannock and other tribes of lesser note in Southern Idaho began hostilities against the growing settlements, but they were captured by the troops after a short campaign and placed on reservations. Since 1879 there has been but little, if any, fears from Indians by the settlers. They have been placed on reservations and are, though slowly, acquiring habits tending toward civiliza tion.
