Book excerpt: A concise, beautifully-illustrated history of one of the British army s most celebrated Irish regiments from its origins in 1688 after the Glorious Revolution to 1876. A proudly Protestant unit, the regiment was first raised to defend the town of Enniskillen against Catholic forces loyal to James II. Taking part in the Battle of the Boyne and the Siege of Derry, the regiment became part of William III s Anglo-Dutch army fighting the French at the siege of Namur. It fought the Jacobite rebels at the battles of Falkirk and Culloden in 1745-6; and then saw service in the Seven Years War with France in the Americas and the Caribbean. After a 2nd and 3rd battalion was added to its strength, the Regiment saw service in Egypt and fought through the Peninsula War, taking part in the battles of Corunna, Busaco, and Olivenca, and the sieges of Ciudad Rodrigo and Badajoz. After entering Madrid, it fought under Wellington at the battles of Salamanca and Vitoria, stormed St Sebastian, and crossed the Pyrenees to take part in the battles of Orthes and Toulouse. The Regiment also fought at Waterloo. The Inniskillings defended Peshawar during the Indian Mutiny. Contains an Appendix, Roll of Colonels, Roll of Present Officers etc., and seven illustrations.

This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 786 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Inniskillings are one of the proudest names in the history of Irish regiments in the British Army. Originating from a local defence force raised in the town of its name in the time of King William III, the Inniskillings fought in Ireland and Flanders under that monarch. They were employed as marines under the ill-fated Admiral Byng in the Mediterranean; and in the War of Jenkins' Ear. Used to help quell Bonnie Prince Charlie's 1745 rebellion, the regiment played its part in winning Canada from the French in the Seven Years' War, and served in the American War of Independence. Expanded to two, then three battalions the Inniskillings covered themselves with glory in the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, - fightiung the French in Egypt, and the Peninsular War, in which their battle honours include Badajoz, Salamanca, Vittoria, NIvelle, Orthez and Toulouse. The first Battalion of the Regiment won laurels at Waterloo and was frequently deployed in India during the 19th century. (This history contains a chapter on the 108th [Madras Infantry] Regiment, and its forebear, the 3rd [Madras Infantry] Regiment which was raised to combat the Indian Mutiny. It was re-designated at the 2nd battalion of the Inniskillings in 1881). The Inniskillings subsequently saw service in the Boer War. This fine history takes the Regiment's story up to the outbreak of the Great War. It includes 30 b/w photos; 16 colour prints, 21 maps and a list of the Regiment's COs.

It is a new and revised edition of Arthur White's much sought-after bibliography of regimental, battalion and other histories of all regiments and Corps that have ever existed in the British Army. Book excerpt: The regiment was raised in 1689 by Sir Albert Conyngham (Cunningham) after whom it was named; the men came mostly from County Donegal. There is reference to an interesting note among King William III s State papers: The Inniskilliners do not care for the English, but they like the Scots, most of their parents being Scotch. It is well therefore not to have too many English in their regiments. The regiment s first major action was the Battle of the Boyne (11 July 1690). Writing about it in his introduction the author says: Of the earliest years of the Regiment s existence I have spoken as one walking on thin ice; susceptibilities are on edge in Ireland when the Battle of the Boyne is mentioned......... That was written in 1909 and things haven t changed since. The regiment was in action during the War of The Austrian Succession and was present at Dettingen and Fontenoy. It was again on active service 1758-1763, this time in Germany in the Seven Years War. At Waterloo the regiment was part of the Union Brigade (Royals, Scots Greys and Inniskillings') and took part in the celebrated charge in which one officer and 85 other ranks were killed (and 164 horses) and six officers and 101 other ranks wounded. It served in the Crimea where it took part in another charge, that of Scarlett s Heavy Brigade, also at Balaklava - more successful but less publicised than that of the Light Brigade. Surgeon James Mouat, attached to the Regiment, won the VC at Balaklava but this does not get a mention in the book though it does say he was awarded the Crimean medal. The Crimea was followed by eight years in India enlivened by the antics of the CO who quite clearly had a screw loose. He had one of his officers courtmartialled and he himself was ordered to prosecute. He placed under close arrest three witnesses for the defence and kept them there, incommunicado, till the so-called trial ended. The whole affair is told in detail and can only be described as mind-boggling. At the end of October 1899 the Regiment embarked for S Africa where it came under General French s command (the C in C of the BEF in 1914), taking part in yet another charge - at Klipfontein. The Regiment served in S Africa throughout the war, returning to the UK after the conclusion of peace negotiations in 1902, and this is where this history ends Forty-one officers and men were killed and forty-one died from other causes. Finally there is an index.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is subtitled A Record of the War as seen by The Royal Inniskilling Regiment of Fusiliers, thirteen battalions of which served, of these ten saw active service abroad. Total deaths numbered just over 5,500, seven VCs were awarded and 46 Battle Honours. An eighth VC was awarded to Lt Col John Sherwood-Kelly of the Norfolks who was commanding the 1st Battalion R Innis F when he won the award. At the end of the book there is a most useful summarised, chronological record of each battalion showing theatre of operations in which they served and battles in which they were involved together with a list of their COs. Two appendices provide the Roll of Honour with the officers grouped together in alphabetical order and the other ranks alphabetically by battalions, and the list of Honours and Awards. These are headed by the VCs with citations and the others are grouped according to the award - in all cases the names are in alphabetical order. Battalions of the regiment served on the Western Front, in Gallipoli, Salonika and Palestine; two of them were with the 10th (Irish) Division, two with the 16th (Irish ) Division - the North and the South. The book is arranged in three parts: the first provides the background to the war and the that of the Inniskillings and the type of man who served in the regiment; the second part, which takes up most of the book, is about the war on the Western Front and the part played by the battalions; the third section deals with the Eastern theatres - Gallipoli, Salonika and Palestine. It is a well-written and descriptive account by one who has a number of books to his credit, including G.H.Q. Montreuil sur Mer written under the pseudonym G.S.O
