Download or read book The Secret Life of Hidden Disabilities written by Kimberly Harms Ryan and published by . This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My book gives a voice to those of us who are living with hidden disabilities, and the discrimination we face whether with, or without the use of a service dog. It seems to have been an unspoken subject. Have you ever gotten out of your car because you parked in a handicap space and you don't look disabled? Maybe even chased down while someone is yelling at you because they assume you are abusing the handicap space? Have you ever gone to ER to find an ER nurse is hunting you down because you don't look disabled enough to have a service dog by your side? Some places ask for papers regarding the service dog, and my city doesn't issue papers. Have you ever gone out to a restaurant only to be harassed by the people sitting near because you don't look disabled enough to have a service dog. Maybe denied service because they don't think you are disabled enough to have a service dog. Have patrons ever chased you down in a store because they would like know why you have the dog? Only to be told, "You are not disabled." This book may open your eyes and heart for those living with hidden disabilities. My hope is to educate those people around us; so that people living with hidden disabilities don't have to endure discrimination and can live in peace among-st a sometimes tough world.

Download or read book Scapegoat written by Katharine Quarmby and published by Granta Books. This book was released on 2011-06-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every few months there's a shocking news story about the sustained, and often fatal, abuse of a disabled person. It's easy to write off such cases as bullying that got out of hand, terrible criminal anomalies or regrettable failures of the care system, but in fact they point to a more uncomfortable and fundamental truth about how our society treats its most unequal citizens. In Scapegoat, Katharine Quarmby looks behind the headlines to question and understand our discomfort with disabled people. Combining fascinating examples from history with tenacious investigation and powerful first person interviews, Scapegoat will change the way we think about disability - and about the changes we must make as a society to ensure that disabled people are seen as equal citizens, worthy of respect, not targets for taunting, torture and attack.
Book Synopsis Defying Disability by : Mary Wilkinson
Download or read book Defying Disability written by Mary Wilkinson and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the stories of nine disabled leaders who, by force of personality and concrete achievement, have made us think differently about disability. Whatever direction they have come from, they share a common will to change society so that disabled people get a fair deal. There are compelling biographies of: · Sir Bert Massie: public servant · Lord (Jack) Ashley: Labour politician · Rachel Hurst: activist and campaigner · Tom Shakespeare: academic · Phil Friend: entrepreneur and business consultant · Peter White: broadcaster · Mat Fraser: actor, musician and performer · Andrew Lee: activist and campaigner · Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson: Paralympic champion Defying Disability is based on extensive interviews with the subjects and the people who know them. It marks their similarities and differences, the forces that drove them to achieve, the impact they have had on policies and practice, and how the modern history of disability in the UK has been played out in their lives. Defying Disability is not just a good read; it will inform professionals in the field, students in disability studies, disabled people, their families and carers, and everyone interested in disability politics and policies.
