Book Synopsis Frontinus: De Aquaeductu Urbis Romae by : Frontinus
Download or read book Frontinus: De Aquaeductu Urbis Romae written by Frontinus and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-04-15 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 97 CE Julius Frontinus was appointed by the Emperor Nerva to the post of water commissioner for the city of Rome. In the De Aquaductu Urbis Romae he sets forth his duties, responsibilities and accomplishments during his first year in office. He sketches the history of the aqueducts, furnishes a wealth of technical data and quotes verbatim from legal documents. This edition is the first since 1922 to be based on the single authoritative witness discovered at Monte Cassino in 1429 and is also the first to take into account the idiosyncrasies of its twelfth-century scribe, Peter the Deacon, a man notorious for literary affectations of his own. R. H. Rodgers provides the first full commentary since the early eighteenth century, dividing his attention between text and language on the one hand and content and interpretation on the other.

Book Synopsis Frontinus and the Curae of the Curator Aquarum by : Michael Peachin
Download or read book Frontinus and the Curae of the Curator Aquarum written by Michael Peachin and published by Franz Steiner Verlag. This book was released on 2004 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The De aquis of Sextus Julius Frontinus is usually interpreted as either an administrative guide for the curator aquarum, or as a work of praise. It can be demonstrated, however, that Frontinus had another goal in writing. The book is more likely what we would call a political pamphlet, explaining a particular administrative reform, and encouraging those affected by that reform to cooperate with it. Frontinus wants to be sure that all concessions of aqueduct water to private individuals be made as proper grants by the emperor. In short, this curator aquarum is interested in regulating the flow of a particular beneficium, namely, aqueduct water, from the emperor to his elite subjects.
Book Synopsis The Scriptorium and Library at Monte Cassino, 1058-1105 by : Francis Newton
Download or read book The Scriptorium and Library at Monte Cassino, 1058-1105 written by Francis Newton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 892 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all the history of hand-written books, one of the most distinctive and handsome scripts is that of the abbey of Monte Cassino. This study examines for the first time in detail the development of this script during the Abbey's greatest period of wealth and influence, under Desiderius (abbot 1058-1087) and his successor Oderisius (abbot 1087-1105). The characteristic Cassinese hand was established long before, but in this period it was transformed into what is today considered its classic form. The present study rests on a fresh examination of many details of the Beneventan (South Italian) script in aspects incompletely studied before. It aims to provide a new history of Monte Cassino as a writing centre and to offer a context for many unique or valuable texts manuscripts that it processed.

Book Synopsis Manuscripts and Libraries in the Age of Charlemagne by : Bernhard Bischoff
Download or read book Manuscripts and Libraries in the Age of Charlemagne written by Bernhard Bischoff and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-04-30 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bernhard Bischoff (1906-1991) was one of the most renowned scholars of medieval palaeography of the twentieth century. His most outstanding contribution to learning was in the field of Carolingian studies, where his work is based on the catalogue of all extant ninth-century manuscripts and fragments. In this book, Michael Gorman has selected and translated seven of his classic essays on aspects of eighth- and ninth-century culture. They include an investigation of the manuscript evidence and the role of books in the transmission of culture from the sixth to the ninth century, and studies of the court libraries of Charlemagne and Louis the Pious. Bischoff also explores centres of learning outside the court in terms of the writing centres and the libraries associated with major monastic and cathedral schools respectively. This rich collection provides a full, coherent study of Carolingian culture from a number of different yet interdependent aspects, providing insights for scholars and students alike.
