Here we stand amongst the great progenitors of our race. Abram's birth was but two hundred and eighty years after the flood: a shorter period than has passed since Queen Elizabeth sat under a tree which is still alive in Hatfield Park, and saw the approach of the royal messenger who brought her, instead of the expected warrant to a dungeon and a scaffold, the tidings of her succession to the throne of England. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heroes of Israel: A Teacher's Manual to Be Used in Connection With the Student's d104book This manual for teachers is designed to be used in connection with the students textbook. The latter contains the stories of the heroes arranged from the British revision, with explanatory notes and questions, and with an opportunity for expressive work in a written review. It is the purpose of the manual to indicate to the teacher how the students may be guided in their work, and how the class hour may be made interesting and profitable. The manual has designedly been prepared for teachers of very slight experience. The attempt has been made to suggest step by step the movement to be followed in the preparation and teaching of each lesson. The object that has been kept in view has been to make it possible for a person with no pedagogic training to teach the stories of the heroes effectively. At the same time the needs of the more experienced teachers have not been overlooked, and it is hoped that such, while using the book with freedom, may yet find suggestions and illuminative material that will be helpful in their own preparation and conduct of the lesson. Indeed, it is desirable even for the less mature teachers that suggestions of method may not always be slavishly adopted, but may often stimulate invention and initiative. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heroes and Crises of Early Hebrew History: From the Creation to the Death of Moses Every man consciously or unconsciously makes his own working canon of the Bible. Sometimes this working canon includes every thing that is found in the Scriptures, irrespective of relative values; sometimes it is pitiably limited, and fails to include many exceedingly important passages. To use the Bible intelligently and profitably it is important to realize that it is a great library, containing many different books, written by a great variety of authors, who lived in periods widely remote, and who wrote with diverse aims and points of View. Over twelve centuries lie between Moses and Paul, and each century contrib uted its part to the gradually growing records of God's revelation of his character and will in the experiences, the hearts and the minds of men. The men of later ages, who have given us our present canons of the Old and the New Testaments, in their zeal to preserve all the existing records, included certain writings, which possess only a secondary historical and religious value. Sometimes, as in the case of the Gos pels, they have also preserved three or four distinct yet parallel records of the same events; and sometimes, as in the case of the opening books of the Old Testament, they have closely blended together the Older and later records into one continuous narrative. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Kings of Israel and Judah The Books of Kings and Chronicles form the main stjurce for the History of the Kings of Israel and Judah. They require, however, to be supplemented, especially for the later kings, by a careful study of the Prophetical Scriptures, particularly of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Hosea, Amos, Micah, Habakkuk and Zephaniah. Local colouring, the life and manners of the time, and the feelings of those contemporary with the events described, are derivable almost wholly from this latter source, which furnishes them often in tolerable abundance. The "Antiquities" of Josephus supply less material than might have been expected, and the character of all additional material derived from this quarter requires to be weighed in the scales of a careful and sober criticism. Considerable light is thrown on the history of some of the kings by contemporary notices contained in the monuments of Egypt and Assyria. It has been the endeavour of the writer, so far as the limits of space allowed, to make full use of all these various sources of information. His labours have been much lightened by the excellent work done by many of his predecessors in the field of Sacred History, as especially by the writers of the articles on the several kings in Dr. Smith's "Dictionary of the Bible," Kitto's "Biblical Cyclopaedia," Winer's "Realworterbuch," and Ersch and Gruber's "Cyclopadie." D. 70 The constant aim has been to assist the student who wishes to blaze his way, so to speak, through the Old Tes tament and trace the events chronologically. This brief epitome, therefore, having been written with a definite purpose, and according to a prescribed plan, is not in tended to be exhaustive, but suggestive. The Bible ac count should, section by section, be read first; for, while the story is so written as to be read continuously it is directly contrary to our intention to take the Bible out of the reader's bands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Founders and Rulers of United Israel From the Death of Moses to the Division of the Hebrew Kingdom Israel's history is divided into four distinct periods. The first, which ends with the crossing of the Jordan, represents the childhood of the race. It was then that the memory of the nation was weak; but its imagination was strong, as the character of the earliest traditions testifies. The second, which extended to the division of the kingdom at the death of Solomon, was Israel's adolescent period. The third, to the fall of Jerusalem in 586 b.c., brought to the nation grave social, political and religious problems, which rapidly developed the ethical and spiritual consciousness of the race. During the fourth period, from the beginning of the exile to the first Christian century, Judaism, in the trying school of affliction, attained its full maturity and crystallized into a closely knit racial and religious unit. The second period of Hebrew history, with which this volume deals, was Israel's heroic age, when physical strength, courage and patriotism were the prominent virtues, and the deeper spiritual and ethical qualities were only partially developed. It was during this period that the Hebrews most resembled their neighbors in character and faith. Their dominant ambitions were to acquire territory and to extend their authority; and these ambitions were fully realized. Within two short centuries, the tribes from the wilderness became a strong nation, and then grew into a powerful empire. Written records now for the first time began to take the place of popular tradition. As a result, the miraculous element, so prominent in the early tradition, almost completely disappears. The greater part of the material in Samuel and Kings is evidently taken from two early, independent histories. The one told of the call of Saul by Samuel, and of the reign of Israel's first king; the other, which begins with the latter part of the sixteenth chapter of I Samuel, tells of the rise of David and of the glories and sins of the Judean shepherd who made Israel one of the powerful nations of southwestern Asia. These quotations from the Saul and David histories are remarkably picturesque and full of detail. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ancient Epic As art-form, the epic centers about the exploits of a hero, as Achilles or Odysseus, or a people, the Hebrews, or, as in the case of Aeneas or Job, a hero who epitomizes his people. Aeneas, leader of the remnant of fallen Troy, serves in the Virgilian account as the forefather of the stock of Rome, linking in his person the races of the Troad and Italy; from his seed springs Romulus, the eponym who gives proud Rome its name. Similarly, the Hebrew patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, may be considered as the eponymous heroes of the tale of their people, for is it not Jacob, under the hard-won appellation Israel, who bestows his name upon his children, chosen of God? Immaterial it is whether a man named Job walked through the valley of the shadow of death; his story is significant not as the tale of an individual but as the synthesis of the despair of the Jewish folk in bitter exile.
