Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Heritage of Hope Perchance you may look for a preface, Though why should I, friends, here rehearse The why and the how of my writing, When all is plain told in my verse. The world has its mirth-making authors, And glad would we be were there more; In wit I am sure I'm not trying, But just to heal hearts that are sore. I know if you read every poem You'll find a good moral in each, For never a line of my writing Is told just to please, but to teach. And so, friends, please wait with your verdict Till you have read all, every one Of my verses that here I have sent you; Then lay down the book when you're done And think of this wide world of sorrow, Of suffering, and longing, and pain. Then I fear not your verdict one moment; You know I've not written in vain. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Heritage of Hope: A History of First Baptist Church, Wilmington, North Carolina, 1808-2008 Heritage and Hope is more than just a campaign slogan. Like the early Hebrew people who drew strength from the reminder that the God they worshipped and depended upon for life was the same One who was the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, this newest generation of Wilmingtonians who call First Baptist Church their spiritual home tell stories, myths and legends of matriarchs and patriarchs who made decisions and sacrifices that shaped the church into what it is today. Important questions that must be asked are, Are the stories true? Are all the facts of the stories told? What are the stories that are not told? Why aren't some stories told? First published in 1950, it has been out Of print for several years. For the new edition, I have thoroughly revised the whole volume and have added three new chapters. The longest of these deals with the ministry at the time Of the Reformation. It supplements happily the interpretation of the Reformation Offered in the several chapters Of the first section. The two Others treat the contribution to Protes tant thought by Harnack and Barth. These chapters also will be we] comed, I hope, by the readers of this volume. They will strengthen, I trust, my argument on behalf Of theological liberalism. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: 2023 Reference Book of the Year from the Academy of Parish Clergy Throughout our history, Jews have traditionally responded to our trials with hope, psychologist David Arnow says, because we have had ready access to Judaism's abundant reservoir of hope. The first book to plumb the depths of this reservoir, Choosing Hope journeys from biblical times to our day to explore nine fundamental sources of hope in Judaism: Teshuvah--the method to fulfill our hope to become better human beings Tikkun Olam--the hope that we can repair the world by working together Abraham and Sarah--models of persisting in hope amid trials Exodus--the archetype of redemptive hope Covenant--the hope for a durable relationship with the One of Being Job--the "hard-fought hope" that brings a grief-stricken man back to life World to Come--the sustaining hope that death is not the end Israel--high hope activists work to build a just and inclusive society for all Israelis Jewish Humor--"hope's last weapon" in our darkest days Grounded in a contemporary theology that situates the responsibility for creating a better world in human hands, with God acting through us, Choosing Hope can help us both affirm hope in times of trial and transmit our deepest hopes to the next generation.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hope of His Calling: Or the Anointed Life If in every instance the servant'is to be as his mas ter, then the various servants must in that respect be alike themselves, and in that respect only are they truly Christian. Christian experience therefore is, and ever has been, an identical experience in all its details. The way from a babe in Christ to a full grown man in Christ, is a way that has undergone no changes in'al'l the ages. It has no forks, nor high cuts, nor parallels. It is one way - the straight and narrow way, so straight and narrow that his feet who travels it must fall successively in the footprints of Jesus, and of all who have followed Him in the past. But if memorializing be confined to things of lifeless beauty, we but embalm our Lincoln as one dead in a dead past. We need a living Lincoln. A living Lincoln, alive in the heart and mind of America, is prerequisite to his immortality as to us. Man's vast future in the Great Republic - which is the last, best hope of earth - will be lost unless the living memorial of such a civic life and purpose be made the continuing (because emulating) life of Americans of each succeeding generation. Book excerpt: During the 1920s and 1930s, anthropologists and folklorists became obsessed with uncovering connections between African Americans and their African roots. At the same time, popular print media and artistic productions tapped the new appeal of black folk life, highlighting African-styled voodoo as an essential element of black folk culture. A number of researchers converged on one site in particular, Sapelo Island, Georgia, to seek support for their theories about "African survivals," bringing with them a curious mix of both influences. The legacy of that body of research is the area's contemporary identification as a Gullah community. This wide-ranging history upends a long tradition of scrutinizing the Low Country blacks of Sapelo Island by refocusing the observational lens on those who studied them. Cooper uses a wide variety of sources to unmask the connections between the rise of the social sciences, the voodoo craze during the interwar years, the black studies movement, and black land loss and land struggles in coastal black communities in the Low Country. What emerges is a fascinating examination of Gullah people's heritage, and how it was reimagined and transformed to serve vastly divergent ends over the decades.

In this respect I may say that I have endeavoured to summarize in readable fashion the substance of many most important works upon the sea, and set the summary forth in the light of personal acquaintance, in the hope that, without my book being definitely entitled a romance, it will be found genuinely romantic in the highest sense.
