Book excerpt: Sport is an integral part of British culture and an important aspect of modern life, but although its importance has been recognised in academic history, in the growing and related fields of heritage and museum studies it has yet to be fully appreciated and brought into interaction More...with historical studies. Ideologically, sport and heritage both convey powerful messages, responsible for shaping our understanding of sport, history, and the past; although they have essentially operated as separate spheres, one important aspect of convergence between them is seen in the rise and popularity of sports museums, the collecting of sporting art and memorabilia, and popular concern over the demise of historic sports buildings and places. The essays in this volume look at sports history as manifested in academic enquiry, museum exhibition and heritage sites. They deal among other things with the public representation of sport and why it matters; its impact on public spheres; the direction of sports heritage studies and what they should be attempting to achieve; the role of museums in public history; and the place, memory and meaning in the historic sports landscape.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift or coffee table piece, this second volume of The Heritage Golf Reader set presents a wide ranging sampling of verse, short stories, memorable quotes, and jokes about the beloved (and cursed!) game. Many famous writers are represented, includ-ing the creator of Winnie the Pooh, A.A. Milne, "An Inland Voyage." The identity of many is unknown. Other stories presented in this second volume of this set are two stories by P. G. Wodehouse, "The Heel of Achilles," and "A Mixed Threesome"; John Campbell Haywood's "The Way of Some," Harry Irving Shumway's "The Greatest Duffer I Ever Knew," A. W. Tillinghast's "A Woman's Way," "The Letter of the Law" by Theodore Banks, and two by the prolific Gerald Batchelor, "The Major's Bogey," and "Local Rules." Poetry includes "A Wonderful Score" by the West Point graduate General Walter N. P. Darrow and "The Conundrum of the Links" by the legendary sportswriter Grantland Rice. Among fifty seven poems there is one of unknown author-ship that was inspired by Rudyard Kipling's "If," as well as poems inspired by Edgar Allan Poe, "The Ravin' of a Golf Maniac," and R. M. Milnes (Lord Houghton), "Duffers Yet." One nonfiction article proves that many issues abide quite a while, as some of the issues discussed today were discussed by Horace Hutchinson (British Amateur Champion 1886, 1887) in 1903's "The Success of the Wom-an Golfer." There are several contributions by golfer/writers better known for their accomplishments in other fields. These include the course designer A. W. Tillinghast and the playwright and Episcopalian minister William Gil-bert van Tassel Sutphen who named the nineteenth hole, and the man who introduced the curveball to college baseball (Clinton Scollard). Memorable observations include those by the writers H. G. Wells, Harper Lee, John Up-dike and the creator of James Bond, Ian Fleming. Memorable quotes from two philosophers, humorists Will Rogers and H. L. Mencken are included. Presidential observations from Woodrow Wilson and Gerald Ford are also included. Finally also are the ideas of the great one, Bobby Jones.

Book excerpt: This groundbreaking history of African Americans and golf explores the role of race, class, and public space in golf course development, the stories of individual black golfers during the age of segregation, the legal battle to integrate public golf courses, and the little-known history of the United Golfers Association (UGA)--a black golf tour that operated from 1925 to 1975. Lane Demas charts how African Americans nationwide organized social campaigns, filed lawsuits, and went to jail in order to desegregate courses; he also provides dramatic stories of golfers who boldly confronted wider segregation more broadly in their local communities. As national civil rights organizations debated golf’s symbolism and whether or not to pursue the game’s integration, black players and caddies took matters into their own hands and helped shape its subculture, while UGA participants forged one of the most durable black sporting organizations in American history as they fought to join the white Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA). From George F. Grant’s invention of the golf tee in 1899 to the dominance of superstar Tiger Woods in the 1990s, this revelatory and comprehensive work challenges stereotypes and indeed the fundamental story of race and golf in American culture.

Myrtle Beach is sometimes called the "Golf Capital of the World," with more than 80 golf courses. The Country Club of Charleston produced World Golf Hall of Game members Henry Picard and Beth Daniel. The 1991 Ryder Cup matches, the "War by the Shore," took place at Kiawah Island's Ocean Course, also the site of the 2012 and 2021 PGA Championships. Hilton Head's Harbour Town Golf Links has hosted the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage for more than fifty years. Bob Gillespie and Tommy Vraswell detail the history of the game in the Palmetto State.

Book excerpt: "Since 1890, golf has been deeply woven into the fabric of Cincinnati's sports culture but little is known of its colorful and famous golfers, golf courses, and related events. Golf reaches the seven hills is a collage of accomplishments, facts, and human-interest stories that all contributed to the rich history of golf in the Queen City. These important and interesting historical fragments get lost over time, unless someone commits painstakingly and selflessly to research, collate, and document them. Golf reaches the seven hills is a must for anyone who loves to play the game and/or learn about its vast history in Cincinnati"--Provided by publisher.

He had been so eager to see them that he'd run seven miles to where the course was situated outside of town. But his elation didn't last. When he asked two golfers if they'd teach him the game, one man responded by saying, 'Son, didn't anyone ever tell you that your kind is not welcome here?' In the 1920's there was no place for Willie, or any black person, on a golf cource. It was a game for white people only, at least in America. But his enthusiasm for golf and his belief in what he knew to be right drove Willie Powell to change that, and to change minds.

Book excerpt: Following in the footsteps of Robeson, Ali, Robinson and others, today’s Black athletes re-engage with social issues and the meaning of American patriotism Named a best book of 2018 by Library Journal It used to be that politics and sports were as separate from one another as church and state. The ballfield was an escape from the world’s worst problems, top athletes were treated like heroes, and cheering for the home team was as easy and innocent as hot dogs and beer. “No news on the sports page” was a governing principle in newsrooms. That was then. Today, sports arenas have been transformed into staging grounds for American patriotism and the hero worship of law enforcement. Teams wear camouflage jerseys to honor those who serve; police officers throw out first pitches; soldiers surprise their families with homecomings at halftime. Sports and politics are decidedly entwined. But as journalist Howard Bryant reveals, this has always been more complicated for black athletes, who from the start, were committing a political act simply by being on the field. In fact, among all black employees in twentieth-century America, perhaps no other group had more outsized influence and power than ballplayers. The immense social responsibilities that came with the role is part of the black athletic heritage. It is a heritage built by the influence of the superstardom and radical politics of Paul Robeson, Jackie Robinson, Muhammad Ali, Tommie Smith, and John Carlos through the 1960s; undermined by apolitical, corporate-friendly “transcenders of race,” O. J. Simpson, Michael Jordan, and Tiger Woods in the following decades; and reclaimed today by the likes of LeBron James, Colin Kaepernick, and Carmelo Anthony. The Heritage is the story of the rise, fall, and fervent return of the athlete-activist. Through deep research and interviews with some of sports’ best-known stars—including Kaepernick, David Ortiz, Charles Barkley, and Chris Webber—as well as members of law enforcement and the military, Bryant details the collision of post-9/11 sports in America and the politically engaged post-Ferguson black athlete.
