Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tests of Coal and Briquets as Fuel for House-Heating Boilers The results indicate that coals containing the higher percentages of fixed carbon give the least smoke and are the most economical. While these tests were going on a general inquiry was being made into the question of central heating plants. The results obtained in this inquiry, when compared with the results of the tests on house heating boilers, Show that such plants are economical for the house holder and that they solve a part of the smoke problem in the cities. A brief summary of the results of this investigation is given on page 41. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from House Heating by Steam and Water: Improved Methods of Installing Heating Apparatus in the Home Short and Accurate Rules for Computing Radiation, Heat Losses, Etc; Graphic Charts Showing Boiler Power and Coal Consumption In the first part of the book are illustrated and described, a number of examples of Steam and Water Heating Apparatus, which have been in actual operation for ten or fifteen years, and which may be considered as fair examples of good average current practice. The greater portion of the work described was installed under the writer's supervision, and compares favorably with the better class of house heating appa ratus. The writer, however, believes that in the near future, new methods of house heating will be evolved that will be a large improvement over present practice. For example: Steam will displace water as a residence heating medium, when it can be installed so the heat in each unit of radiation is under perfect control, and so that the various radiators may be run at any desired temperature, without changing the initial temperature at the boiler, excelling in this feature the best installation of water heating apparatus extant. Download or read book Electrify written by Saul Griffith and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An optimistic--but realistic and feasible--action plan for fighting climate change while creating new jobs and a healthier environment: electrify everything. Climate change is a planetary emergency. We have to do something now—but what? Saul Griffith has a plan. In Electrify, Griffith lays out a detailed blueprint—optimistic but feasible—for fighting climate change while creating millions of new jobs and a healthier environment. Griffith’s plan can be summed up simply: electrify everything. He explains exactly what it would take to transform our infrastructure, update our grid, and adapt our households to make this possible. Billionaires may contemplate escaping our worn-out planet on a private rocket ship to Mars, but the rest of us, Griffith says, will stay and fight for the future. Griffith, an engineer and inventor, calls for grid neutrality, ensuring that households, businesses, and utilities operate as equals; we will have to rewrite regulations that were created for a fossil-fueled world, mobilize industry as we did in World War II, and offer low-interest “climate loans.” Griffith’s plan doesn’t rely on big, not-yet-invented innovations, but on thousands of little inventions and cost reductions. We can still have our cars and our houses—but the cars will be electric and solar panels will cover our roofs. For a world trying to bounce back from a pandemic and economic crisis, there is no other project that would create as many jobs—up to twenty-five million, according to one economic analysis. Is this politically possible? We can change politics along with everything else.

This book was released on 2016-11-07 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Combustion Experiments With North Dakota Lignite The Bureau of Mines is conducting an extensive investigation of methods of burning different fuels under power-plant boilers and in house-heating furnaces, with a view to effecting improvement of the methods or equipment, thus decreasing waste and promoting a more efficient utilization of fuel resources. Some of the publications that the bureau has issued on the economical use of coal are Tech nical Paper 80, Hand Firing Soft Coal Under power-plant Boil ers; Technical Paper 97, Saving Fuel in Heating a House; Technical Paper 137, Combustion in the Fuel Bed of hand-fired Furnaces; Technical Paper 139, low-rate Combustion in Fuel Beds of hand-fired Furnaces; Technical Paper 180, Firing Bitu minous Coals in Large house-heating Boilers; Technical Paper 199, Five Ways of Saving Coal in Heating Houses; and Bulletin 135, Combustion of Coal and Design of Furnaces. This paper gives the results of combustion tests of North Dakota 1ignite burned in two forms - natural 1ignite as it comes from the mine and the carbonized residue from gas retorts. The tests were made by burning the fuels at various rates in experimental furnaces and by studying the processes of combustion. The information thus obtained was used in determining some of the general principles on which a successful furnace can be developed for use under power plant boilers and for house-heating apparatus. A small furnace of this character was designed and tested with promising results. All the experiments were conducted in the fuel - efficiency laboratory of the Bureau of Mines, at Pittsburgh, Pa.
