Over the last decades a dramatic decrease in bee health has been seen on a global scale. This deterioration is seen on a global scale in both domestic and wild bees, precipitating a wider ecological impact. Veterinarians, animal scientists and bee husbandry specialists increasingly need to be provided with the skills to investigate and understand the situation; Managing Bee Health aims to provide an overview of the health of bees at individual and hive level, covering common and emerging diseases and preventive measures. Beginning with an overall analysis of bee anatomy and physiology, then deals with the main diseases and pathogens of bees and colonies and how to treat and control their clinical impact. Providing insights on bee nutrition, insect interaction with flowering plants, and presenting helpful points of contact to report suspected conditions, such as the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The book looks at the global pathogen status of bees, including not only the honeybee (Apis mellifera) but also other members of the Apis family. Managing Bee Health is a most useful guide for beekeepers, advisors, veterinarians and beekeeping enthusiasts, showing practical ways to understand bee health, treat sick or compromised hives and enhance the wellbeing and welfare of these wonderful creatures. 5m Books

Book excerpt: Honey is a much healthier sugar substitute. Just like wine or coffee however, honey is without flavor in itself. It is the nectar from different flowers which creates different honey flavors. If you want to produce mono-floral honey, that is honey that is from just one type of flower, you must place your hive in an area where that flower dominates. Bees who are hived amid an orange grove for example, make orange-blossom honey, while bees in a field of clover will make clover honey. As soon as the flower blossoms, harvest your honey. While mono-floral honey is beautiful and delicious, wildflower honey is equally if not more wonderful, unique and special at the same time. Wildflower honey is made from a natural blend of different flowers. The color and flavor of your honey will vary from harvest to harvest and that's one of the beauty's of beekeeping. In this guide, you'll find step-by-step instructions on how to go about harvesting this liquid gold.On top of this you get beeswax which you can use to make candles and skin care products. Beeswax candles have a delightfully sweet aroma while beeswax moisturizer protects and softens your skin. A common concern among new beekeepers is the apprehension of being stung. If you were stung before, it was probably by a hornet or a yellow jacket, which are aggressive and volatile insects. Honey bees in contrast, are gentle and non-aggressive creatures. The chances of being stung by a honey bee are therefore extremely slim. Honey bees only ever use their stingers as a last resort in order to defend their colony - and the die immediately after stinging. When they are away from their hive and defending the beehive is not a priority, they therefore docile and friendly. On top of this, if you are diligent and watchful of the inspection tips and techniques covered in this guide, you can ensure never to be subjected to stings. Sloppiness on the other hand, can increase the likeliness of stings. But as humans, we naturally built a tolerance against bee stings - the more stings you get, the lesser the impact of itching and swelling.

Book excerpt: The revolutionary beekeeping method that is providing a radical return to healthy bee hives in the U.S. and around the world today is explained in detail in A Lively Hive. Author, Alex Tuchman, the director of Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary in Floyd, Virginia, walks the reader through both the philosophy and practical applications that have shown remarkable success rates. In the past five years, the catastrophic loss of 45% of U.S. honeybee colonies has been well documented. By contrast, in that same time period Spikenard Farm Honeybee Sanctuary has shown an astonishing low loss of only 12%. Tuchman shares the significant difference between beekeeping methods that exploit the honeybee for human agribusiness and alternative methods to beekeeping that are in line with the instincts and wisdom of the honeybees themselves. The amazing results, as it turns out, are found at heart in the relationship and communication between the honeybee and the human-that when we listen to what the bees are telling us, only then are we guided to best provide for the bees' needs in the physical world.

Providing habitat for bees, pollinating your garden, and producing honey for your family are some of the compelling reasons for taking up this exciting hobby. But conventional beekeeping requires a significant investment and has a steep learning curve. The alternative? Consider beekeeping outside the box. The Thinking Beekeeper is the definitive do-it-yourself guide to natural beekeeping in top bar hives. Based on the concept of understanding and working with bees’ natural systems as opposed to trying to subvert them, the advantages of this approach include: · Simplicity, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness · Increased safety due to less heavy lifting and hive manipulation · Chemical-free colonies and healthy hives Top bar hives can be located anywhere bees have access to forage, and they make ideal urban hives. Emphasizing the intimate connection between our food systems, bees, and the well-being of the planet, The Thinking Beekeeper will appeal to the new breed of beekeeper who is less focused on maximizing honey yield, and more on ensuring the viability of the bee population now and in the coming years. Mother Earth News Books for Wiser Living Recommendation “You’ll find information you need here that’s not available anywhere else. Both you and your bees will benefit from Christy’s approach, advice, and philosophy.” —Kim Flottum, editor, Bee Culture Magazine “A unique and exceptional resource for the beginning beekeeper.” —Marty Hardison, top bar beekeeper, educator and international developmental beekeeping consultant
