Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher's Health: A Study in the Hygiene of an Occupation The purpose of this book is to summarize and interpret the most important investigations which bear upon the hygiene of the teaching profession. It is hoped that the findings of the brief survey will (i) make some contribution toward the con servation of the teacher's health by pointing out some of the sources of danger and by sugges tions for a better personal hygiene; (2) that it will awaken those charged with the administration of our schools to the need for further investiga tions and to the desirability of adopting some concerted plan Of action designed to ameliorate the present rather unsatisfactory hygienic status of the profession. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Talks on Health for Georgia Teachers: Issued From the State Department of Education, Atlanta, Ga;, March 1, 1911 Some of the topics are necessarily disagreeable. It would be much more pleasant to ask for exercises on the Good, the True, and the Beautiful or some other aesthetic subject, but no one acquainted with the facts can honestly disguise to him self the real need for the practical instruction given in the following pages. Please do not neglect these distasteful lessons. The Augean task must not have appealed to the classic taste of the old Greek, but this did not deter him from his disagreeable duty. I confidently appeal to the civic pride and patriotism of every teacher to aid in this important work. By tactful management, these talks can be properly presented. It is a matter of common sense as well as civilization, that help and instruction be given on subjects so vitally concerning the health and happiness of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health in the School: Or Hygiene for Teachers Looked at from the point of view of self-interest, teachers have every motive for preventing whatever may interfere with the children's work. There is nothing more brain-dulling than impure air, and the purblindness which arises from defective light management and improper working position. School-stress translated into plain language means, in the vast majority of cases, ignorant school management. It is of little use to study new educational methods unless the material on which they are to be tried is brought into a reasonable condition of physiological receptivity. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher of Health, and the Laws of the Human Constitution But it is no part of our intention - it never has been so - to diffuse light on the structure, functions and rela tions of man, as the ultimate end of our labors; but rather as a means to an end. Moral or spiritual advancement has been the chief end to which our eye has been directed, and still is. To make men more healthy and long lived, Without making them any wiser or better, what good purpose could it possibly answer? It would do little if any thing more than to make them the more gigantic, if not the more mischievous animals. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Health of the Teacher So true is this that any physician with a considerable practice among teachers assumes when seeing a new patient in his office for the first time that probably the trouble is one of a small definite list. From some ills, teachers almost never suffer. This book is the outgrowth of early studies in physiology and hygiene and medical training followed by thirty years of educational experience. For its material, whether theoretical, clinical or consultative, it must speak for itself. The text is based upon systematic lecture courses given for many consecutive summers in the College of Wooster, Denison University, and the Cleveland School of Education. I sincerely hope that it will help its readers to get well and to keep well through more intelligent resistance to the physically destructive influences of next to the most severe of all learned occupations. Medicine alone has more trials, though not a higher death rate. The inner purpose of the book is to help teachers maintain health despite the necessity to accommodate themselves often to seriously unhealthy surroundings and regimen. It is, however, well for us all to remember that there are other occupations with yet greater difficulties to be met and overcome such as medicine, nursing, home management on a farm and some lines of factory, store and office employment. Let us, therefore, try to endure with healthy cheerfulness what for the present perhaps we cannot change. And let us not imagine that from the point of view of hygiene or of any other art or science, even the best of modem schoolhouses or the latest of modern school courses and programs is a finality. Mankind is at the beginning, not the end of the discovery of truth. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher and the School These great phases of education as found in the philoso phy, science, and art of teaching are presented in this work in such a way that helpfulness, good spirit, and personal character are brought to the front as essentials to success in the vocation, while at the same time the realities and the necessities of school instruction are so emphasized and explained that quality and quantity are both given place and prominence. Education is shown to be a gradual process of growth in certain elements that are cumulative in their nature and definite in their existence. The reader constantly con fronts the fact that the teacher has a personal work to do, and that there is no substitute for good health, good scholarship, good character, or good training. Efficiency is a logical consequence of endeavor and of fidelity to the principles of sincerity and truth. Success is a result that can be insured by acquiring the qualities essential to the teaching vocation, and the teaching of children is SO im portant and has such immense possibilities that no person should dare to undertake it without having made a prepa ration that the time and the means at hand give in, such abundance. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teacher: The School, and the Community In preparing the following pages the author has had in mind the three-fold object of modern education: the training of the physical, the mental, and the moral nature of the child. The environment of school life should be in harmony with his unfolding nature and growing abilities, and it should also be a source of constant pleasure to him. The pupil who is absent from school should be conscious that he is missing something - not enjoying a reprieve. To this end, a variety of suggestions, helps, and recreations are offered to make the study of the common branches more interesting. The chapters on nature study, the country school as a public health educator, and what to do with agriculture and home science may be most welcome to the rural teachers who have been struggling with such problems. Effort has been made to unify the work of the school and the home, and special consideration has been given to the school as a community center and as the stimulating source for clear thinking, good farming, and right living. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Work in the Schools Educational hygiene has four chief divisions: (1) The Hygiene of Physical and Mental Growth; (2) Health Supervision in the Schools, including methods of health observation and teaching; (3) the Hygiene of Instruction; and (4) the Hygiene of the School Plant. The first of these divisions has been treated by one of the authors of this book in The Hygiene of the School Child, which has appeared as an earlier number of this Series, and the third, by the same author, is in preparation. The fourth division is to be covered by another author, and is also in preparation. The present volume deals with the problems in volved in health supervision, health examination, and hygiene teaching, in other words, with the second of the above divisions; and it is hoped that it will con tribute materially to the standardization of health supervision and to the broadening of its scope. Every one must realize that a great amount of what goes by the name of medical inspection of schools can be called health work only by courtesy. All along the line, among superintendents, teachers, school nurses, school boards, and even school doctors, education is needed which will lend a broader vision to the purpose and possibilities of genuine health supervision.
