Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Local leaders and residents of urban neighborhoods across the country have mourned the loss of community that once existed in clearly defined neighborhoods. This book tells the story of such a loss. But it also tells about this community’s decades of building and success, of hard work and sharing, of creativity and celebration. Hawthorne emerged as a residential working class neighborhood on the fringe of Indianapolis, Indiana. It began in the early 20th century as new arrivals settled on a remaining strip of open farmland two miles from the city’s center. An stable society of churches, schools, businesses and social groups evolved and prospered well into the post-WW II era. From the early 1960s to the late 1990s the residents’ expectations of permanence gave way to a gradual but devastating series of developments over which they had no control. Many of the residents and the institutions that had supported them either closed or moved away opening the space for newcomers and rentals. Ultimately the neighborhood lost the network of local institutions that had anchored the community for decades. The Hawthorne Community Center, left virtually alone, continued its work and adapted its programs for a changing neighborhood. It was forced to assume the multiple roles of advocate, primary source for the residents in need, and intermediary between the neighborhood and external sources of support. The Hawthorne story provides a useful context for any discussions about the future of constantly changing historic neighborhoods and their relationship with the larger urban establishment. Local histories such as this one also offer a valuable tool to help both residents and outsiders free themselves from the negative stereotypes that tend to blame victims for their current situation.

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why—or even who Tobias Hawthorne is. To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch—and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a conwoman, and he's determined to take her down. Let Britt Hawthorne—a nationally recognized teacher and advocate—be your guide. Raising Antiracist Children acts as an interactive guide for strategically incorporating the tools of inclusivity into everyday life and parenting. Hawthorne breaks down antiracist parenting into four comprehensive sections: -Healthy bodies—Establishing a safe and body-positive home environment to combat stereotypes and create boundaries. -Radical minds—Encouraging children to be agents of change, accompanied by scripts for teaching advocacy, giving and taking productive feedback, and becoming a coconspirator for change. -Conscious shopping—Raising awareness of how local shopping can empower or hinder a community’s ability to thrive, and teaching readers of all ages how to create shopping habits that support their values. -Thriving communities—Acknowledging the personal power we have to shape our schools, towns, and worlds, accompanied by exercises for instigating change. Full of questionnaires, stories, activities, tips, and tools, Raising Antiracist Children is a must-have, practical guide essential for parents and caregivers everywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This gracefully written book considers all of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s works, from Fanshawe through the unfinished romances of his last years, and establishes the pattern of his literary development. Ms. Baym brings the crucial facts of Hawthorne’s career into clear focus, and places the individual works within the total picture. Disputing some enduring critical pieties, she finds in Hawthorne a writer who experimented with a series of literary poses through which he tried both to discover himself and to please his audience. He realized late, she says, the paradox that the more he departed from conventional modes, the more "popular" his writing became. By looking discerningly at all of Hawthorne’s work as it unfolded, Ms. Baym produces compelling new insights into a major American writer and adds appreciably to our understanding of him.
