Book excerpt: Rev. Jared Waterbury declares Biblical living has the greatest effect on happiness. His main point is that joy is found in the presence of God only. He defends religion against opposing views that think religion makes people gloomy. He stresses living a dedicated life and giving up the world's ways to be happy. As he states: "The object of this treatise is to urge its readers to seek for those attainments in piety which shall be not only a solace under the trials of life, but which shall make their felicity sure, and place it on a foundation which can never be disturbed." This book is more about living a dedicated life to be happy. More of giving up the world's ways.

Book excerpt: "The aim of the writer is rather to vindicate Piety from an unjust aspersion, namely, that she robes her followers in gloom and sadness. That she makes them serious, we do not deny; but there is a wide difference between sobriety and melancholy. Sobriety is not opposed to cheerfulness, though it is to levity. Cheerfulness abounds everywhere in the works of God; but levity nowhere, except in the bosom and on the countenance of the thoughtless; and there, it is not the legitimate expression of God's image, but the evidence and the effervescence of sin. The lark is cheerful, as it mounts from its grassy nest, and soars away to the heavens, singing as it goes. Cheerful also is the summer morning, revealing its glad scenery, as the rising sun gilds one feature after another of the landscape. Nature in all this has a lesson for man: she teaches him that Piety, in inculcating cheerfulness while she rebukes levity, is but a faithful response to her own emphatic instructions." "There is but one influence which can effectually reach and relieve that heart, or drive from that anxious countenance its look of deep despondency: Piety can do it. It is her province alone to heal the wounds of our disordered nature, and to send the glow of spiritual health through the soul. And when she comes to perform her work of love and mercy, she first, like her great Author, enters the polluted temple of the heart, and with a scourge, drives out the intruder, and then consecrates it by her presence, and illuminates it by her own heavenly smile." Chapter 1 Piety vindicated from the charge of gloom Chapter 2 Piety gives more and purer joys than it takes away Chapter 3 The adaptation of piety to all the soul's desires Chapter 4 The joy of true piety Chapter 5 Pious joy enjoined in the scriptures Chapter 6 The foundation of pious joy Chapter 7 The joy of believing in God Chapter 8 Pious joy connected with proper conceptions of the divine character Chapter 9 The relation of pious joy to the doctrine of Providence Chapter 10 The joy of salvation Chapter 11 Joyful Promises Chapter 12 Joyful prospects Chapter 13 Obstructions to pious joy Chapter 14 Constant contact with the WORLD unfavorable to pious joy Chapter 15 Constant contact with the WORLD unfavorable to pious joy, continued Chapter 16 The pursuit of riches unfavorable to a Christian's happiness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Happy Christian: Or, Piety the Only Foundation of True and Substantial Joy The unexpected favor with which the religious public received the "Advice to a Young Christian" - the author's first production - induces the hope that, after the lapse of several years, some additional observations on practical religion from the same pen, may not be unacceptable. This little book, though designed for all classes of readers, was written, it must be confessed, with an eye rather to the young; whether professors or non-professors. The former, it is hoped, may be stimulated by it to greater activity in the divine life; and the latter, by the accompanying conviction of the Holy Spirit, be persuaded that piety is the only foundation of true and substantial joy. If this sequel to the "Advice," following in the wake of its humble predecessor, shall but serve - like the life-boat in the storm - to rescue from impending danger, any who were induced by the former to steer for the port of peace, it will afford its author the most heart-felt satisfaction. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Happy Christian: Or, Piety the Only Foundation of True and Substantial Joy IN this small volume an attempt is made to an swer the question, Who are the happy? Many who are ignorant of the nature of true religion, who have never personally experienced its joys or its consolations, entertain the idea that it wars against their felicity. Indeed, some go so far as to assert that religion actually makes its votaries gloomy. To repel this charge is the design of the first part of this treatise. If the reader have indulged such false and absurd notions, the perusal of these pages, it is hoped, will convince him of his error, and disclose to him the fact that piety is the only foundation of true and substantial joy. Download or read book Happiness written by Randy Alcorn and published by Tyndale House Publishers. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you ever wonder whether God even cares if we're happy? This world can be so hard, and we aren't promised an easy road. But that's not the whole story. The Bible is filled with verses that prove that ours is a God who not only loves celebrations but also desperately wants his children to experience happiness. Why else would he go to the lengths he did to ensure our eternal happiness in his presence? We know that we will experience unimaginable joy and happiness in heaven, but that doesn't mean we can't also experience joy and happiness here on earth. In Happiness, noted theologian Randy Alcorn (bestselling author of Heaven) dispels centuries of misconceptions about happiness, including downright harmful ideas like the prosperity gospel, and provides indisputable proof that God not only wants us to be happy, he commands it. Randy covers questions like: How can I cultivate happiness in my life? What's the difference between joy and happiness? Can good things become idols that steal our happiness? Is seeking happiness selfish? How can I achieve happiness through gratitude? What does it look like to receive God's grace? The most definitive study on the subject of happiness to date, this book is a paradigm-shifting wake-up call for the church and Christians everywhere.

Book Synopsis The Joy of Salvation by : Travis Toth
Download or read book The Joy of Salvation written by Travis Toth and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-06-02 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone is seeking the same thing in this life: happiness. When people find happiness, they are often dismayed when it leaves, and soon begin the search for it again. This pursuit of happiness leads on the quest for money and the "joys" it seems to bring. For those who find money difficult to find, this pursuit tends to end with the dangerous abuse of sex, drugs, and alcohol, and ultimately culminates in unhappiness and death. For many Christians, the intentional avoidance of these pleasures is part of their quest for happiness in holiness wrought by self-denial and "good works." Admittedly or not, they find that their Christian experience may have a form of happiness, but with scriptural cross-examination, they may find that they truly lack joy. Joy and happiness are not the same: happiness comes and goes, but no one can steal your joy. Joy will come in the morning and last forever. The truth is that this world holds no joy for the child of God. The Bible says that a friend of this world is an enemy of God (James 4:4), but the joy of the Lord is our strength (Nehemiah 8:10; Psalm 21:1), and our joy is found in the Church (John 3:29; Philippians 4:1; 1 Thessalonians 2:19). The fullness of Christ in us is the only joy to be found this side of heaven. This joy is available for each of us if we trust and obey His commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves. The power to live in the fullness of Jesus Christ here on this earth has been given to us. Even more, it is God's promise to us if we seek Him and desire His Son. Jesus lived to teach us how to please God and fulfill the life of righteousness and holiness. There is great joy and power available for the follower of Jesus who lays down his life to serve in love the children of God. Explore the life-giving promises of God and realize the true joy which lies in following Jesus as a disciple. God has created you perfectly and blessed you abundantly to be able to accomplish the true good works laid out for you before the foundation of the world. There is great joy in finding your destiny in Christ, and no one and nothing can steal this joy once you find it in the promises of God. Paul knew the full joy of Jesus Christ as he served Him faithfully to the end. Many have found the joy of living for Jesus, and many suffered as martyrs for it, bearing their cross both spiritually and physically. But to personally know Jesus Christ is to be filled with joy, hope, and power, and the world cannot take away our hope and joy in the Lord. This is the third book in the "The Promises of God" series, and is filled with power and revelation for attaining to the highest calling of the Christian life. As we follow Paul in his final missionary journeys, we understand that the keys to life are love and faith and that Christ has given us His Spirit with power to overcome this world in victory.
