Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Happenings of a Musical Life A suggestion from Dr. Jordan last spring that he might write some of his reminiscences for the public press led to my suggesting in return that I might print them for him in book form. If I had in mind a leisurely enterprise, stretching comfortably and indefinitely into the future, I was quickly undeceived, for, as I find from an entry in my notebook, he began work on the day my proposal was made, and had practically completed the task within the next fortnight. Such an instance of quick and comprehensive composition seems little short of marvellous. It shows that the writer had his material, consciously or unconsciously, well in hand. It reflects also his extraordinary memory for names, dates and facts. In surprisingly few cases did it prove necessary for him to fortify his recollection from memoranda or by consultation with friends and acquaintances. The book, however, was not altogether composed within two weeks. As Dr. Jordan wrote, his memories branched in many directions, and the result was that a number of additional chapters were eventually produced. The volume stands, nevertheless, as a remarkable example of rapid writing, done with exceptional facility, considering that the author's professional training has been chiefly along other lines. A violin virtuoso, Cook studied at Oberlin College (his parents' alma mater), Berlin's Hochschule für Musik with Joseph Joachim, and New York's national Conservatory of Music with Antonin Dvorak. The guitarist Chuck Brown, the "Godfather of Go-Go," created the music by mixing sounds borrowed from church and the blues with the funk and flavor that he picked up playing for a local Latino band. Born in the inner city, amid the charred ruins of the 1968 race riots, go-go generated a distinct culture and an economy of independent, almost exclusively black-owned businesses that sold tickets to shows and recordings of live go-gos. At the peak of its popularity, in the 1980s, go-go could be heard around the capital every night of the week, on college campuses and in crumbling historic theaters, hole-in-the-wall nightclubs, backyards, and city parks. Book excerpt: For over three decades Michael Nyman's music has succeeded in reaching beyond the small community of contemporary music aficionados to a much wider range of listeners. An important element in unlocking the key to Nyman's success lies in his writings about music, which preoccupied him for over a decade from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. During this time Nyman produced over 100 articles, covering almost every conceivable musical style and genre - from the Early Music revival and the West's interest in 'world' music, or from John Cage and minimalism to rock and pop. Nyman initiated a number of landmark moments in the course of late twentieth-century music along the way: he was one of the first to critique the distinction between the European avant-garde and the American experimental movement; he was the first to coin the term 'minimalism' in relation to the music of (then largely unknown) Steve Reich and Terry Riley, and later Philip Glass; the first to seriously engage with the music of the English experimental tradition and the importance of Cornelius Cardew, and to identify the importance of Art Colleges in nurturing and developing a radical alternative to modernism; and one of the first writers to grasp the significance of post-minimalists such as Brian Eno and Harold Budd, and to realize how these elements could be brought together into a new aesthetic vision for his own creative endeavours, which was formulated during the late 1970s and early 80s. There is also much here to engage the minds of those who are interested in pre-twentieth century music, from Early and Baroque music (Handel and Purcell in particular) to innovative features in Haydn, spatial elements in Berlioz, or Bruckner and Mahler's symphonic works.
