Book excerpt: Prepared by the Committee on Ports and Harbors Lifelines of the Technical Council on Lifeline Earthquake Engineering of ASCE. Hyogo-Ken Nanbu Earthquake of January 17, 1995: A Post-Earthquake Reconnaissance of Port Facilities describesØthe seismic performance of ports in the Osaka Bay region of Japan following the Hyogo-Ken Nanbu earthquake. A team of investigators observed and evaluated the seismic performance of the port facilities and then held numerous data-gathering meetings with representatives from relevant port authorities, engineering consulting firms, construction companies, universities, and private research organizations in Japan. The investigation was carried out over a 10-day period (February 18-27, 1995) and focused primarily on the Port of Kobe, the Port of Osaka and, to a lesser degree, the Kansai Airport. This first-hand documentation of perishable data will enhance future engineering and research work at these and other ports around the world.

Book excerpt: The Jan. 17, 1995, Hyogoken-Nanbu Earthquake was one of the worst disasters to hit Japan in almost half a century. It has been compared in its impact to the great Kanto (Tokyo) Earthquake of 1923. The Kobe-Osaka region held many similarities in its geologic and tectonic setting to many areas along the West Coast, and possibly, other areas of the U.S. A geotechnical reconnaissance to identify the relevant problems and issues was organized. This report provides a timely, first-hand overview of the type and extent of the geotechnical aspects of the damage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the physics behind seismic ground motions and seismic waves to graduate and upper undergraduate students as well as to professionals. Both seismic ground motions and seismic waves are terms for “shaking” due to earthquakes, but it is common that shaking in the near-field of an earthquake source is called seismic ground motion and in the far-field is called seismic waves. Seismic ground motion is often described by the tensor formula based on the representation theorem, but in this book explicit formulation is emphasized beginning with Augustus Edward Hough Love (1863 – 1940). The book also explains in depth the equations and methods used for analysis and computation of shaking close to an earthquake source. In addition, it provides in detail information and knowledge related to teleseismic body waves, which are frequently used in the analysis of the source of an earthquake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive survey data, this book examines how the population of Japan has experienced and processed three decades of rapid social change from the highly egalitarian high growth economy of the 1980s to the economically stagnating and demographically shrinking gap society of the 2010s. It discusses social attitudes and values towards, for example, work, gender roles, family, welfare and politics, highlighting certain subgroups which have been particularly affected by societal changes. It explores social consciousness and concludes that although many Japanese people identify as middle class, their reasons for doing so have changed over time, with the result that the optimistic view prevailing in the 1980s, confident of upward mobility, has been replaced by people having a much more realistic view of their social status.

Book excerpt: Since the turn of the millennium, more than one million people have been killed and 2.3 billion others have been directly affected by natural disasters around the world. In cases like the 2010 Haiti earthquake or the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, these disasters have time and time again wrecked large populations and national infrastructures. While recognizing that improved rescue, evacuation, and disease control are crucial to reducing the effects of natural disasters, in the final analysis, poverty remains the main risk factor determining the long-term impact of natural hazards. Furthermore, natural disasters have themselves a tremendous impact on the poorest of the poor, who are often ill-prepared to deal with natural hazards and for whom a hurricane, an earthquake, or a drought can mean a permanent submersion in poverty. The Economic Impacts of Natural Disasters focuses on these concerns for poverty and vulnerability. Written by a collection of esteemed scholars in disaster management and sustainable development, the report provides an overview of the general trends in natural disasters and their effects by focusing on a critical analysis of different methodologies used to assess the economic impact of natural disasters. Economic Impacts presents six national case studies (Bangladesh, Vietnam, India, Nicaragua, Japan and the Netherlands) and shows how household surveys and country-level macroeconomic data can analyze and quantify the economic impact of disasters. The researchers within Economic Impacts have created path-breaking work and have opened new avenues for thinking and debate to push forward the frontiers of knowledge on economics of natural disasters.

Book excerpt: The U.S. military reported after the fact that "On August 9, 1945, the initial target of the nuclear attack was Kokura, but clouds over the target made it impossible to visually sight the target, so we were forced to drop a nuclear bomb on a second target, Nagasaki.” Most Japanese people believe this story. In particular, the citizens of Kokura, who having "luckily survived" did not spare any effort to cooperate with the U.S. military when the Korean War five years later. This book establishes that this after-the-fact report was false strategic information. It is hoped that this it will help to increase momentum for the abolition of nuclear weapons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Methodological Guidelines for Modeling and Developing MAS-Based Simulations The intersection of agents, modeling, simulation, and application domains has been the subject of active research for over two decades. Although agents and simulation have been used effectively in a variety of application domains, much of the supporting research remains scattered in the literature, too often leaving scientists to develop multi-agent system (MAS) models and simulations from scratch. Multi-Agent Systems: Simulation and Applications provides an overdue review of the wide ranging facets of MAS simulation, including methodological and application-oriented guidelines. This comprehensive resource reviews two decades of research in the intersection of MAS, simulation, and different application domains. It provides scientists and developers with disciplined engineering approaches to modeling and developing MAS-based simulations. After providing an overview of the field’s history and its basic principles, as well as cataloging the various simulation engines for MAS, the book devotes three sections to current and emerging approaches and applications. Simulation for MAS — explains simulation support for agent decision making, the use of simulation for the design of self-organizing systems, the role of software architecture in simulating MAS, and the use of simulation for studying learning and stigmergic interaction. MAS for Simulation — discusses an agent-based framework for symbiotic simulation, the use of country databases and expert systems for agent-based modeling of social systems, crowd-behavior modeling, agent-based modeling and simulation of adult stem cells, and agents for traffic simulation. Tools — presents a number of representative platforms and tools for MAS and simulation, including Jason, James II, SeSAm, and RoboCup Rescue. Complete with over 200 figures and formulas, this reference book provides the necessary overview of experiences with MAS simulation and the tools needed to exploit simulation in MAS for future research in a vast array of applications including home security, computational systems biology, and traffic management.
