Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hand Camera Manual: A Beginner's Guide to Photography in Its Connection With the Hand Camera Hand-camera work has now become not only so fascinating a pursuit, but so useful a hobby, as to need special attention and study, apart from other branches of photography. In this direction the difficulty hitherto has lain in the fact that works devoted to photography only partially applied to the Hand Camera. Even then too, the application could only be made by one already fully conversant with, at all events, the general outline of the art or science. Is is the purpose of this manual to supply the missing link, to provide an elementary handbook to photography in its direct connection with the use of the hand-camera. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Technics of the Hand Camera Whilst fully accepting What will no doubt be the general opinion of the book, there are certain considerations which seem to suggest that it may not be altogether useless. To many persons the hand camera is far from being a toy; it becomes at times quite as much a professional instrument as, for example, an engineer's theodolite; whilst the remarkable skill and ingenuity shown in the construction of the various appliances that constitute a high-class camera, make it all the more worthy of being treated in a somewhat technical manner. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Photography The hand camera and roll holder are especially valuable in rapid reconnois sance work when used in conjunction with the bioy cle, and results may be Obtained more rapidly than by a mounted reconnoissance using the cavalry sketching board. For hasty work in the field, the photographer needs but little in the shape of impedimenta. A hand camera, preferably 5 by 7 with Russia leather bellows, double plate holders, or a roll holder, a rapid rectilineal lens, pneumatic shutter, folding tripod, and rubber focusing cloth, in which the camera may be inclosed for protection against the weather, will prove a com pact and light kit for any field work. The cut films now manufactured possess a great advantage over glass, owing to their lightness, portability, and absence from liability to breakage. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Photography of Moving Objects and Hand-Camera Work for Advanced Workers Not a little difficulty has been experienced in the selection of a title for this little work. 'instantaneous' Photog raphy includes a word which suggests to me nothing more than a convenient makeshift invariably to be employed with inverted commas; focal-plane Photography would alienate the sympathies of all who do not possess such a shutter; whilst to name my book The Photography Of Rapidly Moving Objects or high-speed Photography would involve me in a more or less plausible argument when motion ceases to be slow and becomes rapid. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Photographer Obody who has once come under the spell Of the camera, and has so far penetrated into the mysteries of photography as to be able to expose with a reasonably quiet mind as to the ultimate nature of his negatives, can ever there after free himself completely from its fascination. I have been under the spell for nearly thirty years, but my camera is as good a companion as ever, and photography is as entertaining in 1914 as in 1885. And incalculably easier also. The great reduction in its difficulties and complications has made the camera vastly more popular; but at the same time it has had the curious and unforeseen result that, comparatively speaking, there are fewer amateurs to whom its use is their chief hobby. Formerly success was only to be attained by concentrating one's hole attention on the processes employed, and photography was the pursuit of a few enthusiasts. Today, while almost every one photographs, there has not been SO vast an increase in the number of enthusiasts, although the increase has been a large one. Many have been led by its facility to take it up casually, and have found that even in that way it will furnish a great deal Of pleasure and Of attractive and useful occupation. Some Of these are led further and further in its pursuit. They find that in spite of hand-cameras, mechanical development, and gaslight papers, there is still plenty of scope for the exercise Of personal Skill there are plenty Of difficulties to confront and triumphs to achieve, and that as a pastime an inexhaustible field opens out before them as they proceed. To such a field the later chapters of this book may serve as an introduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Camera Craft, Vol. 9: June, 1904 When a print has been taken out of the printing-frame too soon, and, when too late, it is discovered that it would be worthless if developed in the ordinary way, then every bit of the effect of the sunlight has to be coaxed out of it in a very simple manner. When only slightly under-exposed, heat the strong oxalate developer up to, or a little beyond blood-heat, so that it feels quite warm to the finger. Lay the print flat in a clean tray, face up, and pour the warmed developer gently over it, giving a circular motion to the hand, in order to cover the print uniformly.
